The list of RPGs that have stolen large chunks of my life is (in chronological order of playing):

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny
TES: Daggerfall
Baldur's Gate 2
Fallout 2
TES: Morrowind
A.D.O.M (yes, I arrived at that party later than most)

It's tough to leave F:NV out of that list, as it is currently the RPG I spend most time playing, but it just hasn't been out long enough to have stolen the amount of time from me that any of those six have.

RPG- kotor, hands down. sure the combat wasn't all that great but Ididn't care the story and the characters were so good it totally made up for it. And i'm not even a large swar wars fan.

JRPG- skies of arcadia legends- again good story, bit different from the standard jrpg fare but it was the ship battles and mechanics that made it such a good game. seriously if you have a dreamcast or a gamecube go out and buy this underrated gem.

My Favorite is Morrowind.
Planescape Torment, Golden Sun, Breath Of Fire Series and Tales Of Fantasia are also awesome.

Mass Effect 1, closely followed by Mass Effect 2. I hope Mass Effect 3 will be worthy to get a place on that list.

Secret of Mana. It was one of my first RPG's, if not THE first. I loved it. I think it holds the record for most gours played. The Gamecube was out but I didn't get it until much later because I was still playing Secret of Mana. Everytime I hear the music I get so nostalgic my chest hurts. Best Game RPG ever.

JRPGs - Persona 3 & 4, FFVII & Dragonquest VIII
WRPGs - Oblivion & KOTOR.
Also, I 'role-played' as much in the persona games as i did in any WRPG.

Some of my favourite "angst simulators" as some certain dumbasses might call them are:

Persona 4: Incredibly likeable and fleshed out cast of characters, quirky and mysterious story that deals with all kinds of different emotional themes and a fun, difficult yet fast-paced turn-based battle system. Easily the best JRPG in recent memory for me.

Tales of the Abyss: I'm so pissed off that this wasn't released in Europe. I had to go through so much hassle to play it but was totally worth it in the end. Again, a great, tight cast of characters with a somewhat generic but interesting nonetheless story. I really like the battle system of the Tales games too, even if they are a little too button mashy.

Honourable mentions:

Fallout 3
Paper Mario
Mass Effect
Final Fantasy IX

I haven't been exposed to too many WRPG's sadly (other than the 2 listed above), but I would definitely like to. Now that it's cheap, I'm going to pick up Dragon Age. I'd really like to find a Western RPG that doesn't deal with "Dungeons and Dragons"-esque material though if that makes sense.

Fallot: New Vegas, easily.

I just finished Dead Money and it just further cemented my opinion of the game.

Fallout 1 and 2 get honourable mentions for having a great storyline and characters but falling short in the gameplay department.

A lot of my favorites have been mentioned so far but I'm surpirsed no ones mentioned the first Grandia game. Admitidly it starts out a little kiddy sounding but further in you get more serious it becomes. Perfect when I was growing up I found. But ya lotta favorites mentioned, good taste in this crowd :)

well,it isn't exactly new,but it was certainly innovative for its day(randomly generated maps?in 1989? cuh-razy!)
in 2 awesome dimensions
4 difficulty settings
with a dazzling 16 whole bits of gameplay
not to mention, the ability to change your icon!brain bustaah!!
the game is Castle of the Winds, and I have lost staggering amounts of time to it,considering how basic a crawler it is,it's surprisingly more-ish.
On more than a couple of occasions, the following inner monologue would go through my head:
"right,one more dungeon level,sell treasures,turn off"
"bugger.bags are full and the level isn't cleared.rune-of-return,sell loots,rune-of-return.one more dungeon level and I'm done."
"shit.morning already?may as well clear another dungeon level and then I'm done"
ain't no school like the old school.
p.s. might not work on 64bit windows, just in case that's an issue.

Tough call, but at the moment, Dragon Age: Origins. It had some great writing, you could choose a character background that slightly changed the game you played, your companions were always like-able (although Zevran did get on my nerves sometimes. It was something about his smug attitude...) and the combat wasn't too bad either (at least for PC, can't comment on consoles)

Morrowind
Morrowind
Morrowind
Fallout 3
Morrowind

Possibly Nehrim but it's a total conversion for Oblivion.

My personal favorite RPG is Wild Arms 3 for the PS2. They had a system a sometimes skip particularly annoying random encounters, an interesting story that kept me playing, an excellent combat system (turn-based), and a degree of customization w/o making each of the characters clones of each other.

I consider it the best RPG I've ever played.
