While I agree that as a whole JRPGs are not angst simulators, I think the later SquareEnix stuff is. That being said, my favorite JRPG's are:
1. Xenogears: Hands down the best game ever made.
2. Final Fantasy IV: My favorite game from childhood.
3. Final Fantasy VI: More than likely the best overall FF game.
4. Earthbound: Seriously, check this one out.
5. Chrono Trigger: Amazing game.
6. Dragon Quest VIII: Great story, best of the DQ series.
7. Final Fantasy Tactics: Even if it is a tactics game instead of an RPG, you will love it.
8. Super Mario RPG: Do it. Play this game.
9. Secret of Mana: Not turn based but an amazing RPG.
10. Star Ocean 2: Just a fun game as opposed to the loli pederast sim that the latest one was.

Mine was actually Final Fantasy XIII. I just loved everything about it. I even liked how yuhad to lay as different characters at the beginning. It made me really grow attached to them more as the story went on. And ofcourse the game looks amazing.

Either way, I would like to hear what you favorite RPG's are for two reasons. 1) I am looking for somethin new to try out and 2) I love RPG's
Does Zelda count?

That's an easy question for me, Morrowind. No RPG has ever come even close to giving me as much enjoyment as Morrowind did. Neverwinter Nights has a pretty solid second place though

I'm glad I'm not the only one that loved the hell out of that game.

OT: Oblivion, Diablo 1 and 2, Morrowind, Demons Souls, and if you consider Pokemon a JRPG then that too.

My favourite RPG hmm i am loving the Forgotten Realms setting of D&D3.5. WFRP is always fun with the Halfling Pie Syndicate. But then there is Star Wars as well. Dark Heresy is cool as well oh but then there is Deathwatch and Serenity

OK

1 Star Wars roleplay I love the D6 and D20 rules although i don't like saga ed.
2 D&D 3.5 particularly the Forgotten Realms setting
3 Dark Heresy
4 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd ed
5 Serenity

you don't role play
Role play = ?

(Really, the problem with RPGs is that no one can agree what an RPG is.)
RP=Creating a character that is different from yourself and be that character. Or if you want to get pedantic it is assuming the role of an existing person but that doesn't fit JRPGs either because they SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. The only place that I say that that would fit is in something like half-life where you are the person. You make the decisions (Even if there is only one way to go about it ^_^) rather than the smug/angsty twat that you are controlling.
Oh, okay. There are definitely JRPGs that fit into that definition, then - Devil Survivor and Strange Journey off the top of my head. Also Pokemon, if you consider Pokemon a JRPG :)

Do you consider games like Witcher 2 and Deus Ex RPGs?
My Ideal RPG would be one that has no restraints whatsoever but seeing as that isn't going to happen I'll just stick to my D&D thank you. A little off topic but seriously someone once said to me that Final fantasys are real RPGs but D&D isn't....
That is as valid a statement as your statement that JRPGs aren't RPGs. Generalizations go both ways.
OP: Persona 4 is my favorite. Followed by Legend of Dragoon and Pokemon Crystal.

Demon's souls, this was a game that screamed no mercy to anyone who played, it was one of the most chalenging and frustrating, but most awe inspiring and devoted RPG I have ever had the honor of playing.

I can not wait for it's succesor Dark souls.

I'm a bit of a freshman when it comes to RPGs so spare me the lectures. I'd have to say Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Probably The World Ends With You, because it was really damn good. [sub]Also the unique battle system, well fleshed-out characters enjoyable soundtrack, interesting twists, and a good ending,[/sub] but mostly it's fun.

Eh, gonna be predictable and go with Chrono Trigger. If not that, then Final Fantasy VI or Fallout 2.

I don't really have an overall favorite RPG.

Best love story and best song - FFVIII
Favorite characters and minigame - FFIX (9) not sure of my roman numberals
Favorite RPG for exploration - Oblivion
Favorite story in general - BG2

Also, Lunar Silver Star Story 2 gets an honorable mention because I really liked both the music and the emotions it made me feel (I played the redone version on the PS1.

(Note - Haven't played Planescape: Torment yet - but its on my list!)

Final Fantasy VIII - for gameplay and story. The first time I played this game, I hated it. I couldn't get past the graphics and hated the turn-based battle system. It was a few years before I picked the game up from my shelf and gave it a second chance. But I'm extremely glad I did. It wasn't long before the story drew me in, and I become surprisingly fond of the battle system too. It's not the best, but the fact enemies level up with your characters works extremely well.

Final Fantasy X - for its story, music, and atmosphere. This was the game which drew me into the Final Fantasy series, so it will always have a special place in my heart. The relationship between Yuna and Tidus also led to many music videos, and an interest in video editing. However, I didn't enjoy the battle system; I found the sphere grid extremely frustrating.

Pokemon Crystal - for the adventure. This was the first Pokemon game I picked up. Having played Pokemon Yellow on a friend's console, I decided to buy the more recent version. This world of Pokemon drew me in immediately. I thought the graphics and aesthetics were incredible, and loved the 2nd gen starters. I still think the battle system is one of the best turn-based systems available; the use of elements and elemental weaknesses makes it more interactive and less tedious. :)
