Star Ocean: The Second Story. One of the very few JRPGs I will currently admit to actually enjoying (personally, I think Final Fantasy is mostly overrated anyway).

Or if you wanna be old school, Dungeons and Dragons. I still have my first character sheet (a level 12 Human Fighter) for nostalgia's sake.

Pokemon yellow when I was six or seven. My first video game in general would be tetris blast or Mario Party 3 when I was what, three or four (yeah, I'm a younger gamer. My current age is about 12).

The Elder Scrolls (The original! GASP.)

Played it on a friends computer back when I was 8, and saw but never played the sequel when it came out.

My true foree' (i mite not has spelld dat wright) into RPG games was the FF series. I played tactics then 7 then 9 then so forth.

Final Fantasy I. My uncle gave it to me for Christmas when I was about 8. He used to give a video game every Christmas, and it was usually a pretty crappy one (I remember some NES Zapper game where you shot asteroids). But with Final Fantasy I, he accidentally struck gold. The very idea of an RPG blew my mind at the time.

As a side note, the fact that so many people are listing Playstation-era games as their first RPG makes me feel very, very old.

Dudes, Pokemon =/= RPG

Since there are no personal stats, skills or trades to learn or increase, and no choices in how you complete it.

And Final Fantasy = JRPG
Well, in more recent games, each individual pokemon has stats that increase at different rates, as well as the species default. Plus, each individual species of pokemon has their own moveset. And just because the personal stats, skills, or trades are not present in the usual manner, doesn't mean it's not an RPG. It just means that it wasn't the normal variety of RPG.
