No, but i think people were expecting it to not suck.
I fully expected it to suck. I am superhuman in that my game hype filter has never failed once. Alas, I'm one of very few of my kind, and the bottomfeeders keep getting their games sold resulting in the industry getting worse, because the general audience have no pre-purchase analytical eye.

We're all doomed.

Im not saying I expected it to be good. Im saying people expected it to be good.
Some people might consider this blasphemy but i've never played a duke nukem game, so i wasnt really hyped for this one. I was however expecting it to be a stupid little piece of fun, like painkiller or something.. but apparantly its just stupid rather than fun.

I've not actually played DNF and i dont think i will after all the problems people have had with it, so my opinion on the game is that it probably sucks, but i cant really say because i havent tried it first hand

And a Fallout 3 to play like Fallout? Doom 3 to play like Doom? Wolfenstein to play like Wolfenstein 3D(probably a bad example)? LOZ Twilight Princess to play like NES Legend of Zelda? And God forbid, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast to play like Star Wars: Dark Forces? When 14 years pass between installments, things tend to get updated. I've played Duke Nukem 3D. The controls are awful and the graphics are ancient, ESPECIALLY on the console port which was nightmarishly unplayable. It was good for its time, but should games stay with obsolescence just because they're in the same series or franchise? I've yet to get my hands on a copy or the demo of DNF so I don't know if the gameplay sucks, but demanding nostalgia as the sole factor of judgment is pointless. Duke Nukem isn't about nonlinearity and 80s-90s shooting mechanics, remember when he used to star in side-scrolling platformers? Duke Nukem is, and always has been, a game series about the over-the-top exploits of Duke himself. And IF it lives up to that, Gearbox succeeded. Too bad my PS3 is halfway across the country.
You don't have to worry about defending Gearbox. Everybody knows that the poor quality of DNF is almost entirely the fault of 3D Realms.
I disagree. I blame Gearbox. They bought the rights, they resurrected a dead game, and they decided to push it out as fast as possible instead of making it good. Gearbox gets all of the blame here.

No, it didn't hit a home run. It didn't even make a base hit. The only thing it kept in tact from Duke 3D was a decent sense of humor. That wasn't even Duke 3D's main selling point for me. So what were the real selling points?

- Branching, complex level design with multiple paths to your final destination, as well as several secret areas.
- Challenging exploration and weapon puzzles required to progress from area to area.
- Originality and charm. The weapons were unique, and you got to use any of them at any time (assuming you had ammo). Rather than make more unique weapons, DNF just copied all of its weapons from Duke 3D, and limited how many you could carry.
- Survival aspect of the game. No regenerating health, limited health packs and ammo scattered throughout each level.
And God forbid someone reviews something based on gameplay.
Umm, those were pretty much Duke 3D's main gameplay mechanics. Beyond that stuff, it's just a bland, samey shooter. And that's why removing all of it for DNF netted low scores by reviewers.
My comment wasn't aimed at you. It was aimed at the OP and I was using your and Andy Chalk's posts to support my claim of OP getting it ass backwards.

Sorry, I was going to add more but my laptop chose to act up right then and I couldn't finish. Then... I kinda forgot about it. Sorry.

I was expecting COMPETENT shooting mechanics.

Dear god, the aiming was floaty as hell and Duke moved like he was drunk.

For fuck's sake, I've played non-shooters with better shooting mechanics.

I didn't mind the two weapons. Or the EGO bar, even.

But if the (rather lengthy) demo was anything like the final game, I'm glad I moved my pre-order to something else, instead.

The truck bit was terrible, and the little bits of bad platforming weren't helped by the drunk Duke.

And, yes, I did actually like the jokes, though. Then again, I like Jeff Dunham, and apparently am a poor judge of comedy because of it.

Actually, the original RE games had better shooting mechanics, probably.

What, you mean like a Gears of War cover system, and the steretypical squad of wise cracking heroes?? "Shooting Mechanics" have changed over time a lot since the classic duke nukems.

...Wait, so you encourage children to play Duke Nukem? What the fuck is wrong with you?

In addition to that, you make 2 major mistakes: A) The fact that it was never meant to be serious is no excuse for having a shitty sense of humor. A Bard's Tale wasn't serious, but I was laughing. B) Since when Duke about acting like a coward? DNF has tons of mechanics that rape the ideals that the character is founded upon.
My god. Did not one person agree with the top guy?

I liked Duke Nukem, and I'm used to games being stupidly controlled, being a console gamer. The Humor made me feel like you are twelve again, as if Duke had never even left. (wow, being a nostalgia whore before I'm the alotted age.)

But I admit, they did go abit off from, ya know, DUKE. regenerative health? For shame! at least make it 'regenerate' when he kills an enemy, like what would really happen to a man's ego.

I was expecting...a good game. It was not a good game because it was not fun. That's as simple as i can put it.
