So with the new Mass effect 3 coming out you have to wonder how Bioware will suddenly cause all the characters from the last game to suddenly disappear. So what do you thnk?

Oh god!, is that [plot device]? There's nothing we can do, goodbye, everyone.

...Something like that.

Well I dunno if they actually will - but if they do, wouldn't they just make it canon that most of your team dies?
Considering the multiple endings of Fallout 1 and 2 somehow getting resolved into a neatly canonical package for later Fallout games, I don't see why Mass Effect couldn't play by the same canon rules.

Am I missing something? We know nothing of the plot yet, so why do you think all the characters will disappear?

Maybe you won't separate from all your party members and have to round them up again ya know. It would seem logical that they'd keep em around...but then again a lot of logic was thrown out the window in ME2...

It'll probably some contrived plot element that'll do the trick, just like the beginning of ME2.

They could go all Halo Reach death crazy in the first five minutes, with each person trying to out-noble the other people who already died.

well, I think that they will make it optional for you to load in you´r saved games from ME2, and then it will correct itself from the data there, for example who died in the final mission and who did not.

Your ship will be attacked by a new enemy known only as "The Gatherers". You, and your allies, will die, but you will be brought back to life by the Blue Suns. They're leader, "The Secretive Man" will then tell you he brought you back to stop the Reapers and The Gatherers. And when you mention how all the previous Blue Suns you've fought were all just hapless mooks doing bad things, he'll just say they were rouge elements.

Whhaaaa? You are totally wrong - Gatherers will attack him in Mass Effect 4, and in Mass Effect 3 his ship will be attacked by Harvesters and he will be returned to life by Terra Firma.

Future DLC content.

right now, Bioware is hooked on DLC and I would not be surprised if such thing occurred.

Hmmm... Interesting thought... What happens if you import a save in which Shepard died? o_o
Game over. this has been stated many times.

Exactly.

I'd bet highly that all of the remaining Mass Effect characters return and for Mass Effect 2 all the romance options plus Legion (if you awoke him).

I can't see the the whole Legion and the Geth thing being forgotten about, nor the fact that you can have the loyalty of your entire team, plus the whole idea of Wrex (if he lived) uniting the Krogan and so on; all of these things are surely build ups to the recruitment of armies, much in the same way as Dragon Age: Origins with the Magi/Templars, Elves/Wolves, Dwarves and Men.

If this happens then I think I will laugh, cry and shout at the same time.

It is confirmed IN MASS EFFECT 2 (RTF loading screen) that you will be able to import saves, just as you could do with Mass Effect 1. There will be over 1000 variables transfered to ME3. Also, if you die, it's not canon and you cannot import it into ME3.

well they have a cannon solution for the end of ME1 so i'd assume they would do something similar for ME2. the team will disband to go off and recruit various allies from their pre-shepard days and bring them back towards the end. for your imports the characters that died wil just not be included and those story arcs that would normally be there are locked.

as for the dead shepard ending that will probably not be imported as there's no way shepards body could be recovered from the collector base (though they may go down the cloning route :/)

Well a war is going to be engulfing the whole galaxy, pretty much. I think it's realistic that a lot of your team would better serve the efforts by leading other armies/forces and command other missions that ultimately benefit Shepard. I think it's a given that Shep will inevitably run into everyone who is still alive though. Some of your old team will undoubtedly still be recruitable, though.
