Mainstream 00: Nothing very good. A few catchy tunes and some good songs, but Lady GaGa made quick work of all of them.

Indie 00: Okay, far better than mainstream, but still okay. There are a lot more gems here than in mainstream.

Music in 10: The Indies rebel against the mainstream in an attempt to provide the world with some well deserved ear candy. The Man disapproves and sends out his Disney force to kill them off. Something is wrong though, Disney dies before they can even find the Indies. Why is this you ask? It's because the Indies unleashed the power Internet, addicting the kids-who are now teens- to its sweet embrace.

The Man is getting intimidated now, and wants the Indies dead. He sends out his right hand hermaphrodite, Lady GaGa, to slay the Indies once and for all. Lady GaGa, dressed as a radar, finds the Indies, but when she meets them, she is shocked. The rest of the Black Eyed Peas have detached from The Man and have joined the Indie forces! While it is busy being distracted, Lady GaGa is killed by a heavy dose Voltaire's manly voice, thus ending the music war of the 00's and beginning a new era of music for the 10's.

no, it will not because it is scientifically proven smart people listen to rock and metal, you need a certain amount of "brainpower" to enjoy the fast and complicated guitar riffs and drums.

so it is true, the jonas brothers are stupid, and stupid people listen to them.

I'm looking forward to 2010, personally. A few bands I like are bringing out new albums (Kamelot, Tarja Turunen, etc) so that's enough for me for now.

While I don't have high hopes for a lot of other music.. I'm not fussed. S'long as I get some decent new stuff from bands I actually have an interest in.

As for most dominating genre.. I think pop-punk will come back stronger, probably the cheesy Blink 182 style. That, or boy/girl bands. Ych.

Music? I have not been "interested" in music since the late 90s. That was about the last time I gave a damn about anything anyone said about any band. THAT BEING SAID, observation of trends has granted the power to prophesier:

-I forsee that people who get way to into any specific genera of music will declare all other genera (and often, their own) dead, dying, corporate, and/or shit.

-Mentioning obscure bands that no one has ever heard about will remain the number one way to sound intelligent on the subject of music.

-Metal heads will lament the lack of decent metal. They will then engage in fierce infighting where anyone who claims that [band name] is metal will be labeled a fuckwad, with retorts that [band name] is so much more totally metal. References to dethklock[sp] will be made in abundance.

-Punk people will claim that any band that calls themselves punk is not punk and is actually emo. Green day will inexplicably be continually mentioned by people claiming to listen to and enjoy punk. Someone will inevitably mention the sex pistols, and some twit will get all pedantic and make a bunch of points no one cares about.

-Claims will be bandied about that emo is actually a legitimate heir to the gilded throne of punk. Anyone who makes such a claim will be immediately labeled emo, and thus automatically lose the argument.

-Coldplay will be declared the rock group of the millennium. Panic will promptly ensue.

-Rap enthusiasts will claim that so-called gangsta rap does not in fact define their genera, which is of course defined by the so-called "not-in-the-mainstream rappers," whose cogent prose no one has ever heard, and since they are out of the mainstream, no one will ever hear.

-Jazz and blues artists will continue to starve to death.

-Country music will continue drifting towards a bizzare rap/rock/Christian hybrid and will inexplicably become the most listened to music, ever.

-Lady Gaga will fuse her nonliving flesh with Adam Lambert, and the hybridized duo will make a best-selling song about what exactly Adam Lambert wants to do with lady gaga's disco stick.

Stay tuned, music will continue to be just as pointless as it ever was.

Now every decade has had a defining sound for example the ninties was dominated by punk rock of sorts, i.e. Blink 182, Hot Action Cop, The Offspring etc

I believe the double zeroes, noughties or whatever the hell you just wanna call the decade gone by was dominated by Pop/Hip-Hop Rock, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Rogue traders and the like have been hugely popular in the mainstream.

Now what genre of music do you believe the 2010's will be dominated by.
I already answered this question in great detail in another post a month or two ago, so I won't repeat myself. I don't think it matters much though, nothing's stopping you from listening to whatever the hell you want despite what "dominates" commercially. There was some great music made in the 00's, music nowadays is better than it ever was because we have more options now. It's only going to improve. People who think music is getting worse are forgetting that the really really popular stuff is only a small blip on the radar compared to the wealth of other stuff being made at the same time that you might not be aware of.

If it follows last years pattern the releases will be this, more bloody Lady Gaga, generic boy band number 1, generic boy band number 2, lady gaga, another RnB artist, generic boy band number 1 again.

Music is awful now if you ask me

Great rock with powerful riffs will return and make everything else obsolete. Later in the decade great catchy pop tunes with created by amazing live performers who can actually sing will return too.

I have no hopes for this year. There is no way the music I like will be popular... Unless system of a down come together again, then it will be the best year of all time.

New maiden, gamma ray, rotting christ, eluveitie, rhapsody (of fire), kiaus, children of bodom, decapitated, dimmu, exodus, king diamond, morbid angel, motorhead, gorguts, ozzy, saxon, testament, trivum... In early 2010 alone!

And finally new fuckin' Necrophagist! They have an album from 2003 and 2004 then nothing up until now! And there's rumours of a second Control Denied album coming out in 2010, with the remaining 4 members and a new guitarist. And lets not forget that new Burzum album... Only out of prison and already recording!

I think that the kids are going to grow up, Disney will become less popular and the internet will bear lots of shit, but more diamonds. Indie music will prevail!!
See now im not picking on you but to me once an indie band becomes mainstream (see:Kings of Leon) it just isn't Indie anymore
Yeah, Because when the become mainstream they get a big record label and arent INDEPENDANT anymore.
For most bands the shift to mainstream makes them shithouse. A great example is Kings of Leon, I mean what the fuck was "Sex is on Fire" It made me want to have sex whilst on fire.
Yes i realise the whole label thing, but i meant that the band just doesn't have the same "feel" to it.

If you do ever decide to really have sex whilst on fire will you please video that, shall be amusing
I don't like the elitist indie lover. If the music is good, then the music is good, big record or not, you should be glad that the band has more fans, because then they get more money and can continue to make music. Is Modest Mouse a bad band now that more people listen to them? No! Their latest, "No one's first, and you're next" is a great (But short) album. If a band is successful and continues to produce good music i'll support them, when they start to make bad music i'll stop supporting them.
Music can be good regardless of teh label, I am not disputing that. But when bands get bigger label and go more mainstream the music can and often does become dry and flavourless to appeal to a larger amount of people so the record company makes more money.

Ah, the golden years of music for me was 98-03, or somewhere around then. You kinda had to ignore the Backstreet Boys, but there was so many songs from around then that are still on my MP3 player. There hasn't been anything better than shit since 03, which is why I don't bother with the radio anymore.

I'm hoping the most eventful moment of the decade will be the collapse of the RIAA. It's been 10 years since Napster, and they still don't have the ball down. They are fortunately slowly evolving, but it's not fast enough. To top it all off, they are suing and fining people left and right still. There's even cases of people getting fined for listening to the radio in a public place. Practices like that need to die NOW or they will die themselves for it.

I'm looking for powerful riffs or great catchy tunes performed by amazing musicians, want to convince me something like that is still out there?

Smart people listen to rock and metal? Are you serious? You can't be.

So if music is fast and complicated it instantly makes it better? I hope your not saying that.

Each passing year music is getting worse. 2010 will be dominated by drug-addled shitheads calling themselves musicians....

Atleast Burzum is Making a comeback!

Don't care, I'll just keep listening to Swing, Big Band, Jazz, Classical and everything else in the period 1700-1989 that isn't pop or punk

Something I feel that needs to be mentioned, is that every decade there have been people in the "indie" or "underground" scene complaining that "THIS DECADE WAS THE WORST EVER!" This was happening when the Beatles went mainstream. This was happening when Queen went mainstream. It always happens.

I see the 90s as the rise of good mainstream Hip Hop and the 2000's as the decline of good mainstream hip hop.

I don't think it's fair to say the 90's were dominated by punk rock. The 90's had the boy bands, grunge rock, gangsta rap which all three were massive players in the decade.

You sound exactly like the people who were saying this during the 60s, the 70s and the 80s. Lots of fantastic music was made in the 2000's.

If you want an example - Sigur Ros. Consistently making the most beautiful, amazing and unique music I've ever heard. Radiohead. Something for Kate. Hell, you wanted "catchy tunes" and "great riffs" - what about Muse? As much as I don't like them - they have some songs which meet that criteria. Lots of them.

But anyway, as I said you sound like the old people who chant "it was better back in the day!". My theory still stands as what I mentioned before. It's has ALWAYS been "cool" in the alternative-underground scene to hate new music. Always.
