gaming is in a fast decline into the super generic zone the developers of call of duty will go into the super generic zone and there will be some failed ideas in games by developers trying to keep there head above water also ea origin will have to shut down

Actually take risks for a change
You know, with the amount of money and hardware that these new consoles are gonna take, I have the feeling that we're gonna see less and less risks with this new generation. I think the publishers are gonna be even more overbearing this time around.

By the looks of it, the new generation of consoles will bring little to nothing to the table. What puzzles me is how, for example Xbox players, seems perfectly content knowing that they'll pay for an overpriced box shipped with an outdated Radeon HD6670 (that would be the Xbox 720).

And yet, console players are still defending their consoles with religious conviction, and just pointing out an obvious difference in performance is often met with hatred. Like literally hatred.
I think it's one of those things where they see how just ridiculously snobby you are about your PC's, they feel the need to take you down a notch. Can't say I disagree with them.
Yeah, see this an example. All I did was pointing out how I can't see why console players would defend Microsoft when they are the ones being victimized. Why is that so hard hearing?

I mean really now, how is that being snobby? How is it snobby to point out a technical fact and wonder why people are okay with it? I personally would not be okay with it, no matter how cheap the next Xbox will be. If I wanted that kind of performance for less money, i'd just buy myself a Wii or a bloody iPad.

Not Valve, they can't release their own games in a timely manner, imagine if they were given a console!

OT: I think the push will be towards not only better graphics, but a blend of other entertainment like music, tv and movies. Obviously the consoles now are starting to get it, but I think the next wave will already being to integrate it into the system.
Processing power will be another thing consoles will need to push. The next gen of consoles need to have at least 3x the power of the PS3.

Microsoft are probably going to shift all new games to the new console, so we can either stay with just the "classics", or accept the new console. As for the hardware issue, I see it like this: Is the new chip better than the old chip? Will it play games at all? Do I have any influence over which chip is installed, be it this one or another?

If either of the first two answers are "no" AND answer three is "yes", then it's useful to know. If answer three is "no", then the other two questions are irrelevant, and there's no point to know. Hearing people say things like "it's already outdated" sounds a little elitist. We get it, PCs can be upgraded, consoles can't. If we can't do anything about it (like PC level modding), then we don't really need to know.

I don't get the hatred thing though. It's annoying, sure but not to a "hatred" level...

1. Gimmicks.

2. Uncountable re-releases of 6th gen games.

3. A fourth installment in trilogies that started and ended on the 7th gen consoles.

I'm really worried that the next generation WILL spell the end for either Sony or Microsoft's console days... and my feelings are leaning towards Microsoft at the moment.

Hell, it could be both. Who knows...

I am wondering if there will be another entry into the console race in the foreseeable future.

Valve? Sega? EA? Nvidia? AMD? None seem likely, but stranger things have happened...
Based on the progression of consoles lately, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony and Microsoft drop out in the near future.

Valve making a console? They make more than enough money on PC games, no need.
Sega dropped out years ago.
EA, don't think so. They're super concerned with used sales and online passes, why would they risk more money on hardware?
Nvidia, again, pc's.
Amd, pc's again.

My two cents.

Also if any of the rumours are true regarding the new Xbox, which I highly doubt they are, it will ruin everything to do with used games and people will be pissed. Oh, and it's basically PC gaming at that point but with accessible hardware and none of the freedom.

I could see microsoft ditching disks entirely more then anything. Go back to cartridges really are usb's with glorified specialized plug in only on there next console. They can then sell a addon for playing dvd's or with how they pushing online try to get people to use netflex.

Though just my predictions.. and biased on fact I had to buy oblivion three times before finally getting it on pc because xbox would kill disc and it was only with that game.

Your quote from Team America gives your statement absolutely no weight and makes you look even sillier than you can possibly imagine.

For all those saying 'DRM' I'd seriously doubt that they could integrate it much more into consoles short of Ubisoft being allowed to introduce their 'always-on' DRM to consoles. If the rumoured defence against preowned games does come to the next Xbox then it will likely be in the form of DRM, but let's hope these rumours stay exactly what they are.

I got a crazy heretical one for you. The consoles will be conventional, but the streaming guys like OnLive are coming into the living room. Not that they couldn't be there already with an HTPC or microconsole but it'll be significantly less niche to have such a thing, also TVs are already headed for having "apps" and what not anyway. Half the coverage I read about CES this year was about Apple's vaporous iTV product. No one really expects it to be a console, so Sony and Microsoft have a permanent advantage in being able to play high end games plus all the multimedia stuff they love so much. What if they make an iTunes Streaming Games service? Yeah.

Of course, the quality of service will be wildly unpredictable since it all depends on the customer's network connections. So they may not build it themselves and let the OnLives of the world take the heat from the people for whom it doesn't work well. One way or another, I think you'll see some adoption of that model.

Graphics that look like pre-rendered cut-scenes hopefully the next Halo game looks like this:

And before you say it, I think Halo 4 will be coming to the Xbox720, why? Because if the 360 truly is lurching towards the end of its great cycle, then it would make sense to have it as a launch title.

I would love to see Valve and AMD team up for a console. Preferably with more of a PC slant, Kinda like Alienware are doing with their mini-PCs, but better.

Seriously, AMD already does most of the hardware for quite a few different things (eg 3DS, iPhone), so they have the expertise. I think Valve would be the best to bring something new (and functional) to the table to back it up.

Have you even seen a WiiU?
It uses motion controls, except you're moving around the tablet instead of a remote now.
Godsdamn it, Nintendo....there is no facepalm big enough. WHY CAN I NOT SIT AND ENJOY MY GAMES?
But you get to flail about like an idiot! How is that not fun?! So ungrateful!

OT: So far the 8th generation seems to be shaping up to be a bit of a disappointment. It might actually be the generation where I finally bite the bullet and buy a gaming PC.

I can see Apple trying to get into the fray and blurring the line between PC and console. I've even thought of a name: iPlay.

(Actually, that name looks stupid. But not as stupid as Wii...)

I don't believe that much will change in the form of innovation or improvement. I really hope that the next gen consoles don't focus too much on 3D capabilities/dependencies because a.) it's not great, b.) it's annoying, and c.) we will be in the same situation that the 3DS is in right now: releasing titles that utilize the 3D feature as a selling point rather than an additional feature. This is why Pokemon Black & White was not released simultaneously with the 3DS (and they were release 3 weeks apart from each other), why the initials for the 3DS lacked charm and interest, and why some great/desirable titles had been held back/have yet to be announced.

Give me hologram technology now!

And how do you improve from that? Touchable hologram interface!!

Aside from the obvious advancement in graphics, I think one of the mayor advancements, change or whatever you want to see it, is the predominance of digital distribution. There are already rumors of Microsoft trying to ditch out used games, but as long as they keep a reasonable price and make discounts to their games to rape my wallet every now and then, I really don't care, I'm used to it with Steam.

One thing that's a given will be support for 3D TVs. Now, since there's a standard for stereo 3D, that almost means that standard can be applied to VR headsets.

Unlike the failed Virtual Reality attempts of the 90s, now the headsets can be smaller and lighter, with better screens and better graphics with a higher frame rate.

Combine that with using the inevitable motion control systems to facilitate head tracking for one wearing a VR headset. Ooooh, the possibilities!
