It's not 80%, but MS does own a "non voting" piece of Apple. Apple was facing bankrupcy. MS had no other serious competition and was terrified of being declared a monopoly under US law. To avoid this, MS bailed out Apple financially and they struck a deal to ensure there was always a reasonably current version of Office available for the Apple OS so that they would have some hope of being accepted in the business enviornment.

AFAIK Microsoft bought 5% of Apple in 1997, which they have since sold.
