What would have happened if: Aliens wiped out all romans before they became a big empire.

Hello escapists =)
This is a thread idea i got while i were on vacation, and abit bored at the specefic time.
In this thread i come up with a event in history that actually didnt happen, and then you post what you the world would look like now if this event actually happened.

Event: Before the romans became a REALLY big empire, aliens came from space and wiped them out. The aliens left behind plans for a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning, and a description of how it was to be used, and where and how the materials were found and retreived.

Well, architecture would be set quite a few hundred years back, and alot of the English words that are derived from the Latin would no longer exist.

On the plus side, this wouldn't matter because they gave us a gun which would be able to destroy the entire human race, so we wouldn't be alive to find out how it changed things.

We'd probably be much farther up with technology thanks to our alien masters though.

They don't all do that, obviously, but some do. Asking what the world would be like had the Roman Republic been wiped out before it could become a vast empire and rule most of the known is world is... well...

How could you possibly expect to get an answer?

What would it matter. There would be aliens. What would happen depends entirely on their intent.

Essentially this is the question: "Are all things fated or do we have free will?"

In other words, would our western civilization arise from a set of similar preconditions anyway or is that process non-deterministic. Is our modern civilization a manifest destiny of the human race, or simply a statistical topology on our social fitness landscape (if you pardon the technical mumbojumbo).

Since I do research on evolutionary computing, I'm inclined towards the latter. In other words:

"If aliens had destroyed the Romans, all bets are off. Anything could happen. Or not."

well, for a start, you wouldn't be chatting on a forum, as computers wouldn't exist, because technological advances would be hampered, because the renaissance had to cover more ground because the roman empire that discovered many technologies would have been destroyed prematurely.

Here's a more interesting question: what would have happened if the roman empire HADN'T collapsed?
