I'll go with Yahtzee on this one it's kind of like telling a joke if you are on your own time it is easy, but if you are put on the spot you can't come up with anything.

Well, considering my bank always lists a source, I'd probably google the crap out of said source before I contacted 'em... then I'd most likely contact online customer support to see if it was a legit deposit.

USAA is pretty straightforward about these sorts of things, I wouldn't want to try to pull a fast one on 'em.

If I was with some regular civilian bank, though... I'd consider absconding with the money.

On an unrelated note, that youtube channel has a very appropriate name.

Now I feel kinda bad.

Aye, just because I'd report the money (eventually) doesn't mean there wouldn't be this little tiny bit of me that was ridiculously tempted. Of course, knowing how Hui ended up makes that tiny bit MUCH smaller, but still, had I been the first one to encounter this unexpected pile of money, I'm not sure if my common sense would have held out. x_X

One thing that I wondered was whether Hui could have picked a better country; I'm not sure about Interpol's inner workings, and just which countries it can claim jurisdiction in, but if I had to run somewhere, I'd try to flee somewhere smaller, preferably where bribes can go a long way. <_<;

I'm assuming the deposit is legit and won't send me to prison by using it. I'd go right out and buy the car I've always wanted, Lamborghini Mercilago.

Well my neighbour is currently in trouble because 3 weeks ago he got diagnosed with cancer and he pretty much has no money to pay for the treatment, I have already been giving him all the financial help I can but I don't have a lot of money, so I reckon I would probably give him all of it, I mean he has 3 children to take care of, as for myself I'm actually not too keen on money, if I had a bunch of it I really wouldn't know what to do with it, that's why I let people "borrow" money from me, I mean as long as I can pay my bills and eat I'll be fine.

Hmmm. On one hand, I generally follow the law to the letter. On the other though, being the crazy lady in the middle of nowhere with the Rolls Royce Phantom sounds pretty fun...

First I'd be confused as to how a million DOLLARS wound up in my EUROPEAN account.
After, I contact the bank to find the source, and then I'd make a decision based on that info.

I would definitely contact the bank about it. Sure I would love to keep that money but the bank got the record of my bank account as evidence so I can't exactly get away with it. Even if I did, I'm pretty sure the government will find out eventually.

Wonder who they wanted me to kill this time.

Kidding!

It's only a tenth of that usually.

Assuming that I won't have to give it to some corporate schmo for mistransaction, first convert to euros and then deposit at least half on my account. I suppose I'd pay off parents' mortgages etc. first, and then buy rest of Absolute Sandman alongside top-of-the-line gaming rig with some select games. That would probably amount to something like 2-3 grand, so... I have loads of money for whatever happens afterwards.

Yeah, the smart thing is to let someone know. You can easily go to prison for keeping it.

It's easy to say "Oh, I'd just run for it!" but you'd never actually get any of it out. What are you going to do? Withdraw it from an ATM? You can't transfer it, with that large a sum it would have to be cleared by someone at the bank first. They're going to want to know where it came from.

Too many possibilities for things to blow up. I'm happy enough with my current income, that I wouldn't be crushed if/when the error was corrected. However, if it turns out I can keep it (unlikely, but then again $1M showing up in a my bank account is pretty friggin' unlikely too), then I could do it with a clear conscience.

Now what I would do with $1M is something else entirely. Boring, though. Invest that shit in a [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_deposit"]CD[/a]. Those things are compounded daily, so I could just live off the interest.

First I'd find out if it was some sort of banking mistake, then I'd probably give about 80%-90% to charity and save the rest in case I severely fuck up my life.

I'd wonder who pressed the red button.

I'd let the bank know about it. If it was mine... I'd blow part of it on all sorts of stuff, but leave the rest there... just in case I need it later.

I thought about this a little when the news story broke and I guess the safest way to make money is to put it in a high interest savings account. That way if the bank does ask for the million back you can at least resolve the issue easily. In an account that pays 3% interest you'll be getting 2500 dollars/pounds/euros etc for every month they don't notice which to me is a decent amount of money for nearly no risk.
Yep, this. If the bank's dumb enough to let £1million slip into some random dude's account, they're dumb enough to not notice this for long enough to let me make some serious cash. If they didn't notice after a year, i'd invest it all and never work another day in my life.
