That's pretty much illegal so fuck them. Call the cops on those mother fuckers but only after they've made money.

Norwegian Black Metal
Word.
I remember hearing a story about one dude who went around burning down churches. Another black metal guy tried to take credit for them so the actual perpetrator killed him.
I remember this one time i started a black metal band, i was the vocalist and we were successful for a while then they kicked me out.
Then i killed them all.

One singer fucking blew his head off with a shotgun. Then his band mates made a necklace(s) out of his skull fragments and used the police photos of his suicide as their next album cover.

I think the necklace part was done as a request of the singer.
God damn, that's hardcore as shit.
That CD must be so black metal.
The blackest.
Black as night.
Cue "Paint It Black".

Are your former bandmates your friends? How much do they value the tour? Do you want the money?
Two of the three, I'm surmising alot, and it'd be nice.

If you think you have good morals, then I'd go with letting them do as they will.
But making money off of me?
ArcWinter said:
If you feel spited and think they shouldn't capitalize off your efforts since you aren't there, demand they retract their submission.
They won't

If you feel you should be compensated for your effort, ask for a cut of the album sales or other money to make up for your effort.
Tried it and was told by the drummer that I could, more or less, eat shit waffles.

If you are just fed up, move to Iceland. I hear they have great countryside.
I've heard that too.

I say sue them into oblivion.
I am not a law student, but I am sure that it not legal (in either the national laws or contest rules) to use your voice in an entry when they gave you the boot. Why don't they use their new singer? and if they don't have one, why don't they enter as an instrumental band?

It wasn't black metal, though I've been tempted to start one in either that genre, or more of an ambient/doom metal style (Opeth-esque)
If you start an Opeth-like band, we've got a slice of our school that's willing to buy a fair amount of cd's.
We do like our metal.

Agreed - And dont forget, unless they can get one hell of a soundalike, Unlike guitars where its quite easy to get the same sound, vocals are a ***** to match (i speak from experiance, its a ***** trying to go from a backup singer to a lead after...artistic differences).

If they attempt to enter - Let the event orginisers know.

The real kick in the junk overall, is ... several thousand I'm out. My former drummer has said some relatively harsh things about me, the spineless puke. The album was 5000, by the time press, package, mixing and mastering was all said and done. Paid my quarter. The first 2000 albums sold (@ ten dollars a peice), the first batch of 100 shirts sold (@ 15-25) and then the little stuff like posters and buttons and stickers and what not. And then, we averaged about 75 bucks a show ... given that in some we made 20 and others (Hallowe'en only really) 800, in door sales, but over the course of 4 years we averaged 1.5 shows per month, so 70-75 ish ... over the course of 4 years. Thats alot of bloody money. This isn't 200 bucks. This is up in the thousands.

The legal approach is becoming a bit more appealing
I think you should talk to a legal expert, since, AFAIK, none of us here can claim that title. Generally speaking, you can at least speak to a legal expert for a small fee, explain to him what is going on, and see if you have any recourse according to the laws in your neck of the woods. If you have any friends who know any lawyers, or have used any, that's a good place to start. Usually, if what you're dealing with is outside of an attorney's specialty, he'll be able to at least refer you to someone who you can speak with.

Now, as far as the tour thing is concerned. That's easy. Contact the event organizers and politely inquire what tape was being used to consider the band for inclusion. If your suspicions are confirmed, let the person know that you are no longer singing for the band and that he or she should request material with the current singer.

It makes you look like you're protecting your interests, and not being a petty dick.

So, I was part of a metal band for a number of years. It was good times, lots of shows and a full length album and merch. In January there were some issues, and I was told politely, that I was no longer a member of the band. I was not given a cut of the album sales/merch (considering I paid out of my own pocket my quarter), AND I didn't pull anything from the many shows that we had played over the course of 4 years.

And now, my former bandmates are attempting to jump into an opening spot in the Summer Slaughter tour, tossing in an entry utilizing MY voice (being that I was the vocalist).

And so fellow Escapists, what do YOU all think I should do in this scenario?
Hmm, this situation kinda sounds familiar. Where abouts from Canuckistan are you? (PM me if you want).

Anyways, go the legal route. You'll be the bigger man for it, and frankly, getiing them in a manner they can't rebuke is always a good laugh

That was fast.
Oh, it's not set in stone; I'm just assuming that all of our metalheads would go for it, because Opeth is like #1 in their circle.

The legal route seems to be outshining the beat them up method ... perhaps I should've put a poll on this.

It just really bites to have folks making money off of you. Not being negative, or arrogant. But 9 times out of 10, the vocalist is the what folks associate with bands. All the images (posters and stickers and etc) and the album itself have my angry metal face on em. (Its not always angry, just for metal). Just sucks a big bunch.

if they use your voice without your permission (Unless theres a contract that you didn't read) then you have the right to sue
