What would you say the best games of this generation have been?

It's no surprise to anyone that this generation is- finally- coming to a close. It started out looking like we were going to live in the future, and now, nearly 7 years later..the future's brown/grey and full of chest high walls, and grunting space marines. Assuming every game scheduled to come out after right now is withheld to next gen, what would you say the best games of the 7th console generation were? For me:

Red Dead Redemption- an incredible environment with one of the best protagonists of recent memory. Even the well-worn Rockstar Story (hero starts off at the bottom of the city/crime ladder/general goal, has to work HIS- for it is always a he- way up to become Top Dog) felt fresh and new. The ending was phenomenal as well, it's rare to see a game where everything's right. There were glitches, but I don't know anyone that can say RDR was a bad game overall.

Bioshock- for me, this was the start of the storytelling generation. Until Bioshock, all the 360 and PS3 had were stories that ran somewhere along "go to X and shoot Y with Z" with the occasional betrayal. Bioshock destroyed that all, it was completely linear yet that was almost part of the plot. It deconstructed the nature of gameplay itself; is the player the one giving orders to Jack? Absolutely fantastic.

Assassin's Creed II- Asscreed 1 was a repetitive, buggy let down that had been hyped to the moon and back. It was good, just buggy. When Asscreed II came around, I hadn't read a lot of the hype previews of it, but the premise of the series was enough to get me to come back. Creed 2 is a brilliant sandbox adventure; it's made better for everyone that played the first one because not only is it a completely functional, vibrant game without the sort of esoteric plot you'd expect it to inherit, but it also fixed every flaw with Asscreed 1, making it an absolute joy to play. When Yahtzee said it was Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed one repentance", he wasn't wrong.

I'm going to have to go with Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim.

I've got thousands of hours put into those 3 games and i've been making mods for them for years (only a couple of months on Skyrim though obviously).

They are games i'll still be playing/modding 5 years from now when every other game i've purchased gets forgotten about after 1 or 2 completions.

Console generation? Huh, for some reason I can't seem to get this smug PC gamer smile off my face.

What's that, you say? Dark Souls?

Wow, my smugface... just... disappeared.

- Bioshock
- The Mass Effect series.
- Portal 1 & 2
- Red Dead Redemption
- Left 4 Dead
- Team Fortress 2
- Journey
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- Bastion

That about covers it. Probably a few others I've left out.

This generation kinda played right into my hands with Bioshock taking care of my love of deep sea exploration and Mass Effect covering the futuristic curiosity that lives somewhere in the neglected part of my brain. And for all of the verbiage against the chest high walls field Gears of War still puts a very large smile on my face by enabling me to chainsaw anything that stands in my way.

There are very few games that have been done this generation that couldn't have been done last generation. Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, Journey, Rock Band. Those are the main ones that I can think of. FPS's? Most have been done far better last generation or earlier. Fighting games? Considering the reduction of features in most modern ones compared to any of them from before, these are definately degrading. JRPGs haven't really grown. Most are the same as the earlier ones, or in some cases worse. WRPGs haven't really grown, other than prettier. It's too bad gameplay hasn't grown in them... RTS's? Hardly exist anymore.

I may be a bit cynical, but things like Mass Effect, Bioshock, GTA...yes, they are okay, but nothing special, nor new. At least indie studios are producing games that try to further the medium in new and different directions. It's too bad the big studios with the money to do it, aren't...

This generation has been the most disappointing one that I have lived through overall, especially considering the promise it contained. But that's okay, I'm sure the next generation will be just ducky...

I agree on RDR for the reason that finally someone nailed a western game right (even if it`s a late one playing in 1911).
Other than that there are many titles i really like but i doubt i will remember them much five years from now.

Lets see here

1: Bioshock The atmosphere was awesome, and the story genuinely had some "Oh my jesus" moments.
2: Mass Effect 1 Introduced us to the ME universe, which is, in my opinion, one of the best thought out and awesome sci fi universes around.
3: Bastion It may seem a weird choice but it was just that good. Everything worked, combat, story, and characters all melded together awesomely.
4: Dragon Age: Origins It bought some of the old school RPG ideas and made them new in wonderful fashion again. Also the characters are awesome and the story, despite being cliche, is wonderful.
5: Skyrim Never has such a game wonderfully wrapped me up in its world. The world was huge and wondrous, and the story was actually pretty good.

Honorable Mentions
Mass Effect 2
Halo Reach
Starcraft 2
Fallout 3
Civilization
Sins of a Solar Empire
