What would YOUR Fable sequel have looked like?

A lot of people liked Fable 2 and Fable 3, but an equal amount have expressed disappointment in regards to the direction of this series. I place myself in the latter club. Fable 1 and the Lost Chapters were games that I grew up playing (I'm 17 y/o), and When Fable 2 came out I bought a 360 just so I could play it. The thing that disappointed me most was the utter lack of any connection with the previous game. I felt it was a complete cop-out to skip ahead a century or two and have a blank slate.

If it were up to me, I would have directly continued the story from the original game. Recurring characters! Your hero is the same fellow from the first Fable and, being as rich as he was, decided to rebuild the Hero's Guild after its destruction. You would be the new guildmaster; a better guildmaster. The story could unfold from here in plenty of directions. Jack of Blades could make a comeback, even! I would have liked to see the same overworld return as opposed to completely changing the geography of Albion.

What, to you, would have spelled out a perfect Fable 2 sequel?

A final boss!
I didn't feel great about killing a defenceless old man!
Pretty much ruined the game for me! Also my dog digging up condoms wasn't cool! Haven't played 3 yet. Fearful of more FAIL!

Personally, I thought that each Fable game was better then the previous, so I'd keep them the same.
Although, if I had to change something, I would've added a final boss to Fable 2 and changed some of the moral outcomes for 3.
Going the practical, money building route was evil, which was just stupid in some situations.

I don't think recurring characters would have been a necessity for a successful Fable sequel, and in fact I think the changes of scenery throughout the franchise has been one of its (very few) strengths.

I think probably the biggest problem with 2 (for me at least), was the lack of boss battles. The first game gave you the Kraken and Jack of Blades, and although the Jack of Blades fight wasn't the best final battle I've ever played in a game, it was certainly a satisfying end to the games plot.

Fable 2 was a total ripoff in terms of boss battles. The ending was such a big disappointment that I didn't even bother to buy Fable 3 - it reminds me of some of Yahtzee's videos where he makes the point that companies should put the most time, money and effort into a games beginning and a games end. Those are the two most important parts of the story and your audience will forgive you for a boring middle bit if the ending is good. Fable 2 failed horribly at this.

I'm also surprised that three games in they still haven't bothered to fix the combat so that mage spells aren't instawin.

Few things. One, get rid of the thing where it cuts right from conception to birth. A heavily pregnant character running around killing people would be hilarious (and sexy, I have a pregnancy fetish).

Beyond that, make it available on PS3. I've only been able to play it at a friend's house, and the fucker keeps deleting my saves.

Well, for one, Lionhead has to stop talking up exciting awesome new features THAT NEVER MAKE IT INTO THE GAME.

Also, learning how to write an actual story would be useful.

Lets take F1-3 for the look ,feel and general environments.

Fighting mechanics is Fable 1 mixed with DMC and Goq of war.

Equipment is a mix of Dungeon siege 2/daiblo 2 and fable 1-3. Equipment enhancement works on the gem/slot system BUT you can pay to have it removed(500 per gem, per level on the weaopn/armor IE fire at lvl 3 and a strength gem means it costs 2000 to remove 1 gem) and pay to have a new slot added(1000 frist slot,2K next,4K next,8K next,16K, up to 10 slots a level), gems/stones whatever can be stacked up to 10 levels adds 5% efficiency/damage ect.

Magic system would use 2 buttons, tap either button 1 or 2 once for first spell ,hold it down for a power powerful spell, twice for 2nd spell, and 3 times for third spell, this gives you quick selection of 6 spells. All spells can be charged, spells gain more time, damage and radius area damage when charged, they also use less mana when fully charged and you have not be interrupted in any way.

Now spell levels will be a whole other spell you can slot.

A new stat for spell speed is needed think of this like Melee and ranged weapons, 2 separates one for power/mana and one for speed/magic defense.

Leveling works like a cross between 1 and 2.

AI would be a bit smarter better group fighting better ranged fighting and cover, better one on one combat.

Mmmmm what else? How about a solid story that comes in 5 parts, part 1 child years, part 2 teen, part 3 which is most of the game young adult, part 4 is the end game and part 5 is the aftermath.

My perfect Fable sequel would look like a prequel.

I want to be part of all of those fun sounding events that you heard about in Fable TLC.

We would be able to explore things like Nostro, the origin of Balverines and stuff like that.

Doesn't that sound fun?

QFT, I think if Peter Molyneux actually spent more time developing features that made it into games rather than amazing ideas that don't pan out and telling us all ahead of time how awesome they are every Fable game would have been the games I actually wanted.

I enjoyed Fable 2 but then I only progressed the plot to open up new towns and areas to goof off in. Somewhere in Fable 1 the plot was bad enough that I pretty much starting ignoring them.

right... step 1, lock molyneux in a closet then get to work

scrap the marriage and relationship system and replace it with a Charlie Harper simulator - womanising and if you play a female then man eating.

Guns are much harder to find and kill in fewer shots - like...3. (seriously, 10 shots to kill a single hob unless I charge it up or aim for the head?)

Make magic development decrease your strength qualities and take a ridiculously long time to get to a decently high level but actually do something, like kill in one or two hits, I swear, only time I used it was when some dude was sneaking up behind me.

scrap the morality meters and the way it affects appearance. Make every choice morally grey - and I mean actually morally grey, not just a choice between money and evil or no money and good.

add some complexity to the money making system; make it so that some houses just drain your resources rather than add. And, make it so that people are unwilling to part with their homes "Oh my grandfather built this 'ouse and I don't intend to sell it just for a bad of gold I'll spend on booze and paying rent" - think this could really make things interesting cause you have to acquire property by doing slightly shady stuff or buying it for more than it's worth

and be able to drop kick hobs like you do to chickens.

I heard about fable from my brother, who seemed to be really excited about it (the first game). He claimed he read about it online and how it was going to be so revolutionary (lol Peter moly for ya..).

He seemed to think that the game would shape your character in a way never before seen. He also seemed to think that every character would look different and that it would function (sort of) like an MMORPG, where you could meet other players. He also gave me the impression that "when you get hit, you gain scars where you were hit, this game is going to be so real!"

Furthermore.. he seemed to believe you would be able to do anything you wanted in the game. (LOL I believed him too..) What I got, was a piece of warm poo in my hands instead. I turned the game on for the first time (after sleepless nights of dreaming about the greatness that would be 'Fable' .. lol) and.... you're a kid. A whiny voiced, bratty, ugly little boy that goes around earning gold coins for random ridiculous sounding villagers. "Hold on I'm gonna go take a piss, watch ma farm for me will yeh?" etc.

Also, every hero looked almost identical. You got scars when (I beleive) you were knocked out, and your face was always the same, the only thing that changed your appearance was your skill path (magic, fighting, archery) but not too far into the game... you would have easily maxed all 3.. taking away all merit to looking different or playing a different path another time through... in the end the game was FUN but not revoluationary like it was supposed to be.

Fable 2 and 3 don't have any excuses in my opinion... they had plenty of time but in the end they're exactly like the first game; albeit spent YEARS working on having a cool menu... wow, now thats fun aint it? instead of playing the game let's stare at how awesome the menu is. Actually, it was the same menu that Black & White had but im just ranting now... anyway, thats my take on Fable.

Edit: Oh heheh sorry, forgot to say my fable sequel would have been what Fable 1 was supposed to have been, or at least 2..

That does. And make it so you aren't the Hero that can't die. Make the game difficult. I'd love a game to look into the history of Albion.

Sorry if this is a tad off subject, but one thing that bothered me was the teaser trailer for Fable III - you know, the one where the chicken springs free and has a brief, but adventurous run for freedom. Something about how the trailer ended not only put me off, but seemed to encapsulate the strange nature of the Fable universe; it's like there is this unresolved awkwardness between the bright, colorful, fantasy world and the violent things that take place within it. I didn't play Black and White, but I did play through half of the PC version of Fable, and it makes me wonder if this is really Molyneux's take on fantasy coming through.

First of all, I'd completely change up the art style. I don't know about you guys, but I think Wraithmarsh and Darkwood should have been a hell of a lot darker, literally and atmospherically. Likewise, I think they nailed it with Oakfield and Driftwood for the charming, quaint environments, so just brightening those up and putting a really rosy finish on it would have made those fantastic. As for Bowerstone (in all the games), it definitely felt too quiet (less so in Fable 2, but still) so I'd get on that as a priority. Looking at the Assassin's Creed crowds for that one.

Secondly, I'd bring back all those spells we seem to be missing, minus one or two of the useless ones. I'd keep guns though, they worked pretty well. And the weapons, I'd probably stick with the Fable 2 idea for the main ones (i.e., Iron Longsword and Master Axe, all that stuff) but have the Legendaries morph with your actions. And proper morphing too, not that randomly-changing bullshit. And I'd have a proper story with some proper characters.

Finally, the moral choice system is a nice idea for a game like Fable but it just doesn't work. Presenting two choices is not realism, unless you happen to work in an ICU. So I'd abandon the 'two ends of one scale' idea of morality and probably have something akin to Fallout NV's reputation system, which made me actually consider the effects of my actions on other groups.

Ahhhhh. Having said all that, I do love the Fable series, it is one of my favourites. But if you're selling silver, don't market it as diamond. Silver sells well too, and you won't get a load of angry fuckers showing up at your doorstep when their 'diamonds' tarnish.

Fable 2 was fine as is. I wouldn't change a thing.

Fable 3 was garbage. First, I'd put back the "childhood" portion of the game, as that's always been a huge part of the series' charm. Why they removed this for the third game is completely beyond me.

Second, I'd get rid of or at least drastically change the entire sequence at the end where all you do is make decisions. It's boring and stupid. I'd either make it more interactive, more like a mission, where you actually DO stuff, or I'd just cut it down to where you make the decisions without having to sit through cutscenes.

I'd add a REAL final boss (might as well do this for Fable 2 as well). Both games end too abruptly.

I'd change the real estate portion to where it's not tedious to maintain/repair all your properties. That part SUCKED. There should have been some sort of "Repair All" function.

I suppose I'd keep the last part of the game (the "new evil") but I'd introduce clues and hints much earlier in the game so that when it does happen, it's not out of fucking nowhere.

I certainly wouldn't make it so that if you didn't save up an unreasonably huge amount of money before the end, you're completely screwed as far as keeping your promises. The game needs to give you some indication early in the game that you'll need to save THAT much.

I'd do a bunch of other things too, but this should do for a start.

See, that's funny,
because I thought you were talking about Fable III there

Fixing the final boss fight so it FEELS like a boss fight would be a step in the right direction. Also, for the love of all that is holy, can we please have some voice actors who don't have insanely hammed up English accents? Every woman in the games sound like they're the stereotype backwoods, rotting teeth English girl, and the men are no better. I could only find one girl in Fable who had a different voice actress, and she was the one I ended up marrying. If you don't believe me, compare Elise's voice in Fable III to any of the random NPCs. You'll see what I'm talking about.

How about you have a great destiny thrust upon you and its something like being the last one of an ancient race that can stop this horrible deity that will kill everyone. Plus you get the choice of going into first person to fire your long range weapons or even swing your sword if you want. How about a shit ton of side quest to let us actually do something after the main quest, or even before the main quest. What if say the game let you customize weapons with your own perks like 2 fire for 30 seconds that would be nice. Also what if instead of being called Fable the title will be relevant to a famous in game lore or book. Maybe we can just skip the third one and go to the fifth game in the series and mix it all together.
P.S. Molyneux if you happen to read this in your search for knowledge for Fable this post is a joke.

Okay, for one thing, I'D STOP LISTING TO PETER!!! He's driven that game into the ground. I don't care if I can marry someone or buy a house (I would only do that to hold my stuff). Nobody cares about it. At least I don't. If they just did some tweaking that would make it better. Here are some things they can do:
-Switch between FPS and TPS
-Stop customization, the armor was cooler and different types of armor for different types of weapons (ie. strength, skill, or will)
-MAKE A BETTER PLOT LINE, maybe fill in the 500 years between F1 and F2.
-Work with Bethesda. I know that it isn't really a good idea, but they could help with some of the game-play mechanics.
-Make a bigger world where you have to walk everywhere instead of transporting because it makes the game more immersive. Also, more exploration can mean more game-play for the character.
-Be able to climb, jump, and move anywhere they want, it helps.
-I'm sorry for repeating myself, but the storyline for the Fable games are all typical RPG stories. I'd like to see some variation on that.
-Don't make all the heroes white. It's kinda racist.
- Do something special like time travel or something that might be cool, like the Portal gun or ADAM.(Those are examples used in other games)
-Make it for the PlayStation. You'll have a wider audience and more sale profits will be made.
-Look at other FPS RPG's like Oblivion, look at what they have and what they can improve. Put that into Fable.
I hope the people at Lion Head can read this becuase it F4 fails, I'm not playing anymore.
