Sticking with the zombie thing that seems to have taken over:

A zombie MMO/FPS would be amazing. You could model an entire city and the surrounding suburbs and maybe some farmland but a smaller city like Philadelphia or Baltimore. Survivors can lone wolf or travel in packs, give people the ability to stake out buildings, create barriers, scrounge for food, weapons, clothing, etc. Force people to find a safe house if they want to log off or risk being found if they disconnect somewhere out in the open.

In this kind of game it isn't about leveling up or getting amazing equipment, just surviving for as long as you possibly can until your character is killed. There would have to be playable zombies with special abilities who could lead the horde. Maybe they aren't like the Tank in L4D but they can snag 5-10 of the NPC zombies and lead them around. Get enough player zombies together with their entourage and assault houses, skyscrapers, etc.

If you live in the city there is a larger zombie population but more food, clothing and weapons. If you live in the suburbs there are fewer zombies but less of the things you need to survive so you would have to choose a location based on those factors also.

Finally, when your character dies you can choose to restart as a human or continue as a zombie, however, zombies should also be capable of a final death if they are shot in the head, massively crippled or something like that so if you are playing as a zombie you don't just throw yourself at buildings over and over knowing that you will just respawn.

Screens for Deus Ex 3...

I'm worried. Its supposed to be a prequel right? They've gone for the same clean look as the 2nd game... So the world was clean looking and everything was all shiny and smooth before the fist game took place, then it went all cyberpunk at the time of the first game, then the world went back to being clean and futuristic looking in time for the second game?

No. I'm not convinced.
Not to mention Deus Ex 2 was supposed supposed to be when things were royally fucking up. yet even that city with a plague being spread around was sleek and elegant.

In the game's defense, the dance party ending was almost worth the game's shortcomings. Almost.
Yeah, it definitely had it's good moments, but the first Deus Ex was just a really hard act to follow I guess, theres not really anything to improve upon ha ha :D

Uhh wouldn't a sidequest that impacts and changes the main quest no longer fall into the sidequest category? Sure in theory it does sound good. There has to be something to having the freedom to mess stuff up without impacting the main story. That is half the fun of a free open world.

This.
I'm happy with Mass Effect and I doubt Mass Effect 2 will disappoint.

We need a free-roaming game that all the characters can die at any time, anywhere, and by any means, and the story will compensate for it.

Try making me that Bethesda!
they could.
If people can mod different characters on Fallout 3, they can make repercussions throughout the entire game.

Glitches may happen though.
Also, it wouldn't be ultimately worth it, it would create the same problem of Mass Effect and make those characters dump life stories into your face.

I'd like one with any characters able to kill, though.

1. Zombies, I have yet to see a zombie based sandbox game. What the hell?
2. Exploration with rewards and easter eggs. One of the things I loved about GTA San Andreas and the ONLY thing I liked about Fallout 3 was exploring the area and finding stuff, even if it was just a shitty little buggy I was happy that I found it.
3. No teleporting, just walking + vehicles.
4. HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE area. One of the few good things to come out of current gen games is completely huge areas bigger than most countries.
5. Real-time time and weather.
6. Checkpoints. This is not the 90s we don't want to have to go back to the last save point. (Yeah, Far Cry 2!!)
7. Smooth interaction between all surfaces and features. No falling through map because you're not supposed to be there etc.
8. More zombies.
9. Can't believe I'm saying this but... fucktonnes of minigames and sidequests. Preferably an infinite amount of side quests getting more and more difficult.
10. Yet more zombies.
11. Online is not neccessary but some things would be good. Like training your character in the game then going online and using it for a deathmatch (ranked obviously). Also game stats online so we can know who is a sad grinder who's played the game so much no one can beat him.
12. ZOMBIES
13. Multiple gaming styles. Sandbox RPGs should include everything: shooting, racing, platforming, zombies, etc.
14. A plot (with zombies).
15. Did I mention zombies?
this plus more zombies and 4 player co-op on the same screen

That's what I thought Fallout 3's Point Lookout was going to be like: Night of the Living Dead quest or something.

I'm surprised they didn't ever do that: keep the zombie hoard at bay type thing. Especially considering you can unleash a zombie hoard at Tenpenny.

That would be a good project for someone with the PC version of the game & the GECK.

What I want is actual varied environment I don't care how large the world is if it all appears to be a copy/pasted section of the same area over and over. Fallout 3 tipped on this but insisted on dousing everything in that gunmetal gray color, and ruined it.

Farcry 2 at least tossed some jungle in against the endless desert. Nothing really seems to have pulled it off properly yet though. I'm in the process of playing through ARMA 2 right now and despite it having a massive open world... it's all basically from the same color palette as well.

The name of the game to make it good is variety though, sadly variety means more textures and more development work for the game creators, which is why I think it's been largely overlooked.
