Ooo! Thanks man! These guys are pretty good
I first heard them when they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Manchester.

It was beautiful.

Oh, and when I'm listening to the album version of Higher Ground, there's a faint noise in the main instrumental that sounds just enough like my house phone's ringing to make me pause and check.

YES! I know that sound! I used to mistake it for my fire alarm

Something I recently noticed in this song

During the second verse ( 01.45 ) If you listen closely (To the right ear if you're using headphones), you can hear this distorted guitar, and it's just playing this really sexy riff..And it just sounds so fricken good!! and I've been listening to this song for ages and I only very recently acknowledged it

That is pretty amazing.

I can't listen to "Bio-mechanic Man" by Lordi the same way after hearing this...

Bonus points for Harry Partridge!
Bah! That has nothing over this one.
Or this one.

It can seem a little odd if I think about it too much; in a lot of sections during Opeth's Damnation album you can hear the sound of his fingers sweeping up and down the fret board in between notes, a prominent example being @4:45-5:50 on the track below:

It seemed a tad incongruous at first, but it's nothing so conspicuous as to abate my enjoyment of that lovely bluesy solo. Not too much of a big deal in this instance, but I suppose it varies depending on how frequent/conspicuous/obnoxious of a distraction it is.
That is easily one of my favorite albums of all time!

OT: Sometimes I hear a breath or two but it doesn't bother me unless I focus in on it forever. Heck some breathing sounds great as it adds intensity to the upcoming line or scream.

Same here! Epic tastes fellas.

I tend not to notice breathing much, but the squeaking of strings in acoustic songs, definitely. And I love it, it makes the whole recording seem way more lifelike. The only example I can think of right now is various Opeth numbers. Oh yeah, and for breathing, the beginning of the first track of Lamb of God's new album:

Learning to breathe silently is something every singer should try to do. A sudden gasp for air can be very noticeable.

It could add a certain something to a song under some circumstances. The squeak of guitar strings, etc. can be used to create a specific effect. Hopefully it's intentional, used as a tool, not just a side-effect of sloppiness.

In other words, it should be avoided, unless you're doing it on purpose, for a good reason.

I tend to enjoy things like what the OP's talking about.
Makes the music and performance feel alive.

I was, and still am, listening to LoG when I saw that I had been quoted. I was also just looking up tickets to their Dec 04 show in Iowa... Crazy!
Just been getting into them since they blew me away at Knotfest.

Loved Opeth for a while, go music budies!

I quite like it, as it's a strip back to a basic style of production which makes the song seem more natural.

I find that a lot of 60's album are like that, I guess they didn't have the technical means to brush up the production on things like breathing, and chord moving.
Actually, they did. Well, sort of. It's not "brushing up" per se, it's just "not doing it in the first place."

Listen to Muse.

After. Every. Fuckin' Line.
I cant listen to Falling Away With You anymore. Moreso for the fucking guitar screeching when he changes chords. One day I just picked up on it and now I can't unhear it.
