For a band I can guarantee you've never heard of, try the Littlest Man Band, they were a side project of one of the members of Reel Big Fish, and they're awesome. Look up a song called "Always Sayin'" for starters.
Also try Neutral Milk Hotel.
Chuckle.
It was that very song (Always Sayin') that encouraged me to buy Better Book Ends, which I did this morning, then I searched the Escapist to see if there were any like-minded people. There were. I've only listened to the first three songs on that album, but I already love them. Just a shame they broke up four-and-a-half years before I began listening.
Oh, and Neutral Milk Hotel? Also awesome. I'd say they were like an early Fleet Foxes (FF and NMH are the only semi-popular folk bands I can think of).
As for my suggestions... I would say Modest Mouse and Moxy Fruvous. I know Modest Mouse are pretty big in Americaland, but over here in England they are pretty unknown (at least to the majority of people, but them indie kids know
everyone...). Moxy Fruvous are a Canadian folky band, and if I were to recommed one album it would be 'Live Noise'. This is perhaps the best live album ever, and I can tell you why in three words: Lowest Highest Point.
