Sorry for bringing back this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one. A band that I love but no one else seems to know about is The Levellers, they're a british World band and they rule.

I'm still surprised by how many people don't know who Tom Waits is. He's really well known amongst musicians, but not the general public.
He's my all time favorite.

Barry Black too. He does a lot of (80s) Waits like instrumentals. Weird stuff but I like it.
Nothing on youtube. Just some guy who does covers of other songs.

Also, one of the few things I really appreciated about GTA4 was the soundtrack: almost as good as San Andreas. Besides having two jazz stations, it got me into Russian music (yes from the tree good songs on that station) like Leningrad and Golgol Bordello which wasn't but really should've been on there.

Abney Park. Little-known steampunk band. Quite catchy. They have their own website at www.abneypark.com
Blast, you beat me to it.

Only know about their existence for a week or so, though.

*Silly me, not looking at the age of your post.

For a band I can guarantee you've never heard of, try the Littlest Man Band, they were a side project of one of the members of Reel Big Fish, and they're awesome. Look up a song called "Always Sayin'" for starters.

Also try Neutral Milk Hotel.
Chuckle.

It was that very song (Always Sayin') that encouraged me to buy Better Book Ends, which I did this morning, then I searched the Escapist to see if there were any like-minded people. There were. I've only listened to the first three songs on that album, but I already love them. Just a shame they broke up four-and-a-half years before I began listening.

Oh, and Neutral Milk Hotel? Also awesome. I'd say they were like an early Fleet Foxes (FF and NMH are the only semi-popular folk bands I can think of).

As for my suggestions... I would say Modest Mouse and Moxy Fruvous. I know Modest Mouse are pretty big in Americaland, but over here in England they are pretty unknown (at least to the majority of people, but them indie kids know everyone...). Moxy Fruvous are a Canadian folky band, and if I were to recommed one album it would be 'Live Noise'. This is perhaps the best live album ever, and I can tell you why in three words: Lowest Highest Point.
