Bubsy the Bobcat. His 2D platformers were bad and the 3D game was terrible.

Franchises that deserve to die never die, so I can't think of any at the moment.

I'd say those franchises do die, they're just zombiefied with corporate voodoo. I'll cite The Simpson's as an example: it was great at first, became a ratings and merchandising juggernaut, also a cultural symbol, and that status is why it will never die.

You know, this is a really tough question... But since you didn't necessarily say it had to be a videogame, I'll go with the Dragonball anime series. It has been one of the most overhyped and overrated things that ever existed.
