It depends on what genre you like, but the first anime I ever saw (and still my favourite to this day) is Tenchi Muyo!

I suggest that.

Wait...reading anime?

Are you looking for shows or manga, specifically?

I can help with shows, but I can't help with manga. Too expensive for my blood.

For a good starter anime...I recommend Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, or Rurouni Kenshin.

Read Anime? You read Manga, and watch Anime.

For a beginner I'd say Death Note. It's great and doesn't contain much of what people hate about Anime. For example, No filler, No over exaggerated expressions and... well the fanservice is barely there so yeah check it out. That is, if you can follow it. I know some of my friends would find it hard to. Find the English version, since the Dub is so good.

Calumon: When you want, you could see me! :D

I'm really not into anime at all, however, one of my favorite movies is Akira. I feel that's a good platform to spring from. Also by reading anime, do you mean manga?

Try Cowboy Bebop.

Top notch English dub, mature tone and story, and great animation.

You can't go wrong.

...READ an anime? It's called manga, and I've hardly read any. The best I've read is Dance in the Vampire Bund, but it has gore and some nudity.

For anime itself, I always suggest Cowboy Bebop.

Well I've watched it since I was little (Toonami was the best thing ever back in the old days), and I started with Dragonball Z, but I didn't really watch anything else until Lucky Star, which is what really got me into anime. So I say Lucky Star.

Tenchi Muyo? Oh man, here comes the nostalgia. I haven't seen that in ages.
