whats a good anime series to start with?

It depends on what you like but I'd start with Cowboy Bebop.

Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Besides the fact that nothing I've seen so far has resonated with me the way Cowboy Bebop has, this series is more likely to engage a western viewer because of the way it tackles popular tropes, in a manner not unlike Quentin Tarantino's.

Anyway, Rurouni Kenshin is a great one to start with.

The Rurouni Kenshin Anime is Great and the RK Manga is Amazing.

Its an excellent place to start as it has a bit of almost everything.
Action, Romance, Comedy, Drama(Political as well), as well as a great Story ans awesome Characters.

I enjoyed Lovless, Vampire Knight, Fullmetal Alchemist. (Deathnote is ok...)

For viewing pleasures:
Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, FMA Brotherhood. (I also liked Ghost Hunt but that might just be me)

I'd suggest starting off with one of the shorter ones, it'll give you a good idea of what to expect from other series' without having the mountains of filler and character exposition of longer runs that seems to put people off. Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Black Lagoon and Claymore are the sort of thing I'd start with (Death Note was my personal jumping off point). I'd also echo the people suggesting Samurai Champloo and Full Metal Alchemist. I've finally got around to watching them after many years of meaning to, and both are great thus far.
