Our brains work such that drawn pornography can turn us on, and for some of us it does. That's really all there is to it.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've seen a few hentais, and I find myself fast forwarding through most of it. The plots are Hispanic soap opera levels of bad. The characters are always completely unlikable and divorced from all human emotions save for desperate unrequited love, rape and...more rape.

And even the sex scenes are usually terrible. A. Apparently all hentais have to be censored now, so why bother? B. The squawking, squeaking sounds the female VA make are like ear poison. and C. The dialogue. Of fuck me raw, the dialogue is Kojima levels of not human, and D. Rape, which is bad.
Now? That has been the law since the US introduced it post-WWII

I always was attracted to it. Even when I was an EHKOS Jr. I was just "Misty is a *****, but I feel connected to her in some way that I will later learn is the feeling of sexual arousel."

Plus, it's a drawing, you can draw super hot curves. Or, say you don't like blondes, just doesn't do it for you. BAM, commission the artist for a jet black hair version.

idk what else to tell you, it makes m'dick hard.

While others have said what the general appeal of hentai is, the appeal it had for me was sheer scope of imagination and visual aesthetics. For example, the ovas, back in the day you had hentai like Angel Blade, Bible Black, Marine a go go, Viper GTS... all hentai that were visually stunning as well as diverse in their fetishes, even those that had rape in it weren't all dark and grim and had a sense of humor/wonder to it. Now it's all just cringey, bitter, depressing rape shlock or bland, boring vanllia trash with no middle ground and a complete lack of effort.

Doujins and manga are slightly more varied as some artist are masters of the craft, and there's always a desire to see your favorite characters have sex, but then they always head down the slippery slope of rape/ntr nonsense and then they become unlikable. And as I have come to notice, it seems like these kinds of fetishes get the best treatment in the entire industry.

I want to make it VERY CLEAR that I'm not ragging on these kinks and saying they shouldn't exist or the people should be shamed or whatever, I'm saying spread the wealth a bit man. There are men in the world that don't have see and hear women screaming and/or crying to get a boner.

I only partake in manga, but:
- Manga girls are cute.
- Things are sexy in hentai that wouldn't be in real life.
- Things are possible in hentai that wouldn't be in real life.
- Oddball, cheesy love stories are a draw for me where they're used.
- I'm fairly confident in the knowledge that nobody was harmed in the making of it.

It scratches an itch real porn can't get to. One of my favorite artists is Kato Hayabusa, who draws women body types I like with very vanilla stories. The story called "Nice to Meat you" is very good at this as well. Vanilla with a woman with a few extra pounds finding out her guy actually likes her that way.

I'm assuming you're talking about stuff that either got de-censored, released before WWII or released outside Japan? That law has been in place for a long time,

My understanding of it is that censoring pornography has been law since post-WWII, but it's only been relatively recent changes that put the draconian 'It must be censored, no matter where it's being sold' standard into place.

This is going to sound cheesy as hell, but I like the attempt at story. Vanilla has some of the most sweet, adorable, awwwing shit I've ever seen. I think two actually made me cry once.[footnote]Note joking either[/footnote] I also like how females have natural bodies that are nigh impossible without surgery in the real world.
I can second this. I genuinely liked Mysteries of the Necronomicon as an anime. The fact that there happened to be lots of sex in it was just...well, it was certainly a thing. Actually, for something called "Mysteries of the Necronomicon" it did feature a distressing lack of tentacles...But to reiterate: stories in hentai can genuinely be entertaining.

Um.

It's aesthetically pleasing? I dunno. I just enjoy it.

Different strokes (in a few different senses) for different folks.

Going to echo the "some of it is ridiculously sweet" sentiment. Some genuinely adorable and romantic stuff out there...

What..? I enjoy me some cute vanilla.

Well back in the 00s I believe Japanese law allowed Hentai to be uncensored if it was going to be sold in foreign markets. Though today I'm guessing not a lot of hentai is sold outside of Japan or at least not to the US, which may be part of the reason why we don't see much uncensored hentai.

Because what I like is hard to get in real life, therefore doujinshi sites and hentai are my only way. It's not ALL I like but when there is a whole industry dedicated to giving me this thing I'd never had before, it certainly helped explore and understand my sexuality and how I live with it on a daily basis.

Basically, it's good shit as any other erotic medium. Yes, sometimes they do actually get it not just sexually arousing but EROTIC and it's all you need.

Well... hmm, what possibilities...

1. Idealized figures/imagery
2. More creative freedom (Weirder shit is possible)
3. Removed from porn industry (For people concerned about pornographic employee abuse)
4. Shit, I don't know, gives people boners
Ding ding ding gives people boners is indeed the correct answer. Seriously how much thought are you guys putting into your boners?
Oh, I don't know, I saw Neon Genesis porno once that got pretty fucking cerebral.

Also a dude on pornhub that wrote all of his comments in iambic pentameter.

I don't know, it's porn. People get off to it. The only thing I can really think of is that because it's animated it makes it possible to realize erotic fetishes not possible with live actors.

I'mma just repeat exactly what I said in the "What's the appeal of futanari" thread.

Counter question: What makes one guy an ass-man and another guy a tits-man? What makes one girl attracted to large dicks while another is attracted to the ass?

Asking "what's the appeal of futanari" is like asking for an explanation of the appeal of virtually any physical attribute or sexual fetish. You're going to get a wide range of responses, almost none of which will apply to everyone.

Instead, just learn to accept that people are attracted to different things, and that you don't necessarily share in those attractions. Trying to understand everyone's individual affinities is a fruitless, and maddening, endeavor.

Or, to be succinct:

While I can find the appeal at times, I generally can't get past a lot of common quirks that tend to be ever present in Hentai (as well as a lot of anime). Not so much due to the content or subject matter so much as the emphasis on heavy exaggeration as an artistic theme/style (IE, over-exaggeration of physical traits, facial expression, voice acting, personality traits, plot, setting, character psychology, etc.).

A good narrative/story often times needs a little embellishment now and then, and good comedy sometimes depends on a fair bit of over-the-top silliness. And yes, Western erotica/porn does involve a fair bit of unrealistic content, but put too much in a blender and... things get pretty messed up, sometimes beyond recognition. There are some exceptions (both in hentai and manga) but they usually seem to be of the minority.

1) Much more freedom to display the weirdest kinks, including stuff that doesn't exist in real life or that wouldn't be sexy in real life (I have a guro fetish, for example).

2) Sometimes it's better to look at porn when it's fictional figures rather than real people who don't seem to enjoy themselves for real, at least mentally.

3) Much better narrative. No, really.

Okay... I usually don't do this, but if you honestly have to ask about this, it puts my perception of your intelligence to question. Let's see:

- the ability to have literally anything happen, maybe?
- the ability to make any and all possible fantasies into a visual image?
- the massive variety of art styles and genres
- let's not forget that Rule 34 can be awesome (Dead or Alive anyone? Or any video game franchise for that matter)
- no ethical concerns
- having actual, sometimes downright phenomenal talent involved (anyone can make a sextape; not everyone can draw sexy ladies well)

Honestly, do you really have so little imagination as to not realize these things?
Eh. I know where you guys are coming from, but you can get the same sort of creative freedom from well written erotica (no Shades of Grey doesn't count). While admittedly lacking in visual and auditory content, much of the same kinds of kinks or themes can be explored, perhaps even more effectively, through written narrative than hentai. But then again, maybe I'm a little bit biased due to how unappealing I find a lot of hentai/anime stylistic elements.

Hentai scratches an itch that either can't be replicated (well) in real porn, [Tentacles, monsters, horse level ejaculation (Which is in almost every hentai), furry,] or definitely shouldn't be replicated in real porn [loli/shota, guro, vore, non-consensual, bestiality] and you don't have to worry about acting ability in the manga, because all lines are basically executed perfectly in the mind. And, honestly, hentai has some stories that are so sweet you forget you're supposed to be whacking it.

There's also stuff like netorare, which is better done in the manga than in porn. They tend to be pretty stupid
A man blackmails a married woman. She has sex with him and he wont tell her husband that she used to be a bully. That's it That's what she cheated on him for. There's also another one where a man forcefully kisses a woman and takes a picture of it, then blackmails her with it. Women in hentai are ridiculous sometimes.
But some of them are good, in a heartbreakingly tragic kind of way.

Sidenote: #notallorcs
I do kind of agree with this. While I've not run into it very often, this is certainly something I've found pretty unique about a certain heartfelt appeal that some hentai (and anime) have, that are perhaps much rarer in Western equivalents. And thanks for pointing out that hentai comes in manga format too. Kind of wish I'd read your post more fully before presenting my previous comments, but I guess it sort of still applies (perhaps less so in a way due to lack of audio/video).

My favorites are the ones where he will tell the husband she use to sleep around a bunch. Because the horror of the thought your wife slept with other men before meeting you. Divorce that ho and move onto fresh pastures!
