My top 4 are:

1: Thief 2 Metal Age. Great open world levels with plenty of things to do in them although the AI seem to miss you if you stand in their face but in a dark corner...

2: Deus Ex. Much like thief, open levels and lots of choice.

3: Mark of the ninja. It has it's flaws. Sometimes feels a bit trial and error but works well.
Very good at the core with easy to notice noise, if your hidden and score for repeatability

4: Batman Arkham Asylum( I haven't played Arkham city) Good stealth faster paced and you can still fight back if you screw up.

Beautiful Thread.

1. Tenchu Stealth Assassins - Beautiful levels to explore and tackle however you choose, great score, compelling story(I?m not saying it?s a great story but I still like it) and some really fun and challenging stealth gameplay.

2. Hitman: Blood Money ? play as an emotionally dead human being who is all about the money ?I can do, whatever I?m paid to do?
Blend in get the perfect vantage point peg a guy in the eye with a bullet and sneak away...what?s not to like

3. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory ? I just really love sneaking around the levels in this game.

4. Mark Of The Ninja ? What a beautiful game, from aesthetics to gameplay.

Honorable mentions, Skyrim(yep, best way to play that game) Deus Ex, Dishonored(Haven't played more than a part of the first level so....)Hitman Absolution(Hell that game is more splinter Cell then current Splinter Cell games.)

Thief: The Dark Project. I'm an odd ball and actually liked Thief 1 over Thief 2.

The Arkham games were good at stealth too. I liked Asylum over City.

While I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for saying this...

...Uncharted 2/3.

While the games were mainly trying to ape a Hollywood-esque blockbuster mentality most of the time, the few completely optional stealth sections in the games, I felt, were pretty good. Playing as a stealthy Nathan Drake was far more rewarding and many of the staple elements of more traditional stealth games (IE walking on non-noisy surfaces, staying out-of-sight and out-of-light, etc.) were either thrown away or toned down to make them manageable to people who weren't stealth aficionados. To me, the games distilled the stealth genre to its two most important aspects; figuring out how you could take out individuals and figuring out what order those individuals should be taken down.

Death to Spies and especially Death to Spies: Moment of Truth are really good. They're kind of like more realistic Hitman set in the second world war. You play as a Russian spy and you do all sorts of missions from stealing intel to assassinations and rescuing prisoners. The first game is a bit clunky and unpolished, and you have to use mods to get the original voice acting and swastikas back into the English version, but it's still a lot of fun. The second one really improved on pretty much everything and it's easily one of my favourites.

Also, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. It's not a pure stealth game, because you can play it as a warrior or a mage type character as well. But if you want, you can make a stealth build for your character and play the game that way, and it's pretty good.

Hitman: Blood Money and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory are great games too.

Manhunt tops the list for me. I don't think that I've ever felt more panic while playing a game, and having Starkweather in your ear doesn't make things any easier.

1. Splinter cell: Chaos Theory
2. Metal gear solid 3
3. Thief 2: The Metal Age
4. Hitman Blood Money

Deus Ex just misses out on that list, but only just.

Off topic a bit.
It seems people like Thief 2 a lot, so I have a question that some of you may have encountered. I bought it a couple years back, but when I installed it, there was a problem with the lighting, it was dark and I mean really dark, brightly lit places were quite gloomy and what I'm assuming was meant to be minor darkness was almost pitch black. I remember trying 1 solution changing some setting in a .txt file, but that didn't work.

Has anybody else had this problem and solved it?
(Windows 7, 64bit, if it helps)

Until someone bests it, I have never played a stealth game that was better than the first two Thief games. There's been some enjoyable contenders, but either they aren't really stealth games (Stealing in Morrowind had its place), or they give the bad guys guns (Deus Ex, Batman, Metal Gear Solid) and one mistake means you won't be playing a stealth game anymore.

Just checking, but you made sure the brightness settings weren't messed up? I know you could change them on the fly with a certain key stroke.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I'd say the Deus Exes, but describing them as stealth-em-ups is ignoring what they really are.
