Me and my friend were arguing over which one was better in a zombie apocalypse, mostly due to the fact we were bored.

Which one do you think is better and why?

I think a shotgun because they look awesome, there traditional for zombie-killing and there guarenteed to kill one at close range.

Cross-bow if you have bolts and a scope and a crowbar and are a, wait, how about gordon free man and this should be a poll.

In a survival situation I would say the cross bow, due to the ease of being to fabricate your own ammo, ammo being reusable and also a crossbow has a greater ability to penetrate someone who is armoured with kevlar. It is also quieter, the last thing you want to do is make alot of noise and draw attention to yourself.

For pure zombie killing needs, a shotgun would probably be better, quicker reload time would be the main reason. It all depends on how much ammo you have available :)
What I was thinking but too lazy too say... except the kelvar part.

You could have made a poll, but i would go with shotgun.
You can hit multiple zombies in 1 shot and I'm not sure but i think crossbows are hard to reload.

Well, I think it'll be easier to kill with a shotgun, easier to get the shells, easier to load, all that stuff.
So...
Crossbow. Because it rocks.

Oh, no need to post twice to get the post count up. No-one cares.

Shotgun: multiple shots before reload, doubles as a melee weapon

...unless the crossbow has a mounted flamethrower

What if the gunshots alert the zombies of where you're hiding? The crossbow lets you re-use ammo as well.

Crossbow is better if it's Romero zombies but for 28 days later style infected you'd want to rock a shotgun. that being said, the crossbow is silent and a shotgun would attract zombies from miles around.

In the words of Max Brooks, author of the zombie survival guide, "The only thing worse than zombies is flaming zombies".

Well, if you have had excessive training with a crossbow, and you have the time to shoot from a distance, I'd go with a crossbow. You'd have to be a damn good shot to hit the head or dislocate the spinal cord from the brain with a crossbow.
Overall for crossbow: Good for sitting on top of your shelter and shooting zombies down.
Scopes and hot bolts would be good (source: Gordan Freeman)

If you are at a shorter distance and don't have time to be fiddling around, than shotgun is the way to go. Never use a shotgun when trying to go for distance though. That won't kill a single zombie.
Overall for shotgun: Good for short distance and emergencies.
Keeping a well stocked shotgun is good when you are on the move or when zombies are starting to surround you. (Left 4 Dead)

The shotgun i would say. The crossbow looks great but i takes hell of a lot of both time and musclepower to reload it after every shot. with the shotgun you can reload faster and if you are lucky you can take out more than one zombie at the same time. A hard thing to do with a crossbow.

For long range and stealth, the crossbow is best. If its loud, up close and personal, the shotgun is best.
