What's going to be the next big enemy in games?

I think Lovecraftian creatures would be a huge hit with everybody. Impossibly twisted fusions of every creepy body part imaginable with no rhyme or reason, their very presence disrupting the very reality around them. You can do whatever the hell you want because their nature defies any kind of definition. Sadly, it won't happen on any mass scale because it's way easier to model on top of motion-captured actors than it is to animate something completely from scratch.

That wouldn't work for some for another reason.
From what little I know about Lovecraft's stories and critters, you rarely ever actually fight or even see them because if you do your sanity takes a nosedive and your very being is ripped asunder. It's part of the Lovecraftian horror appeal. My point being, taking creatures established as being doom-bringers and making them cannon fodder for a game doesn't do their source material justice. It's the same gripe I have with Arkham Horror.

Robots. They're great because they can have a wide variety of forms, styles, motives, weapons, and ai behaviors. Plus, imagine some robots that were like the Borg and upgraded to combat whatever strategy you used against them.
Yeah, something like this would be interesting.

We should go back to Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are smart, lethal, come in many varieties already and most importantly they're cool. Unlike zombies which are just dead people. You can do cool things with zombies as left 4 dead shows, but honestly it takes a lot of effort to do something that interesting with them because you are building up on a foundation of nothing. Dino Crisis 2 is ******* amazing, and the first Turok games are also pretty entertaining. Primal Rage is still a gem to this day and the Dinosaur parts of Tomb Raider 1 and 3 are still the most interesting and memorable parts of those games. Heck, even that Lost World game for PS1 and Sega Saturn was cool. Primal Carnage also looks pretty sweet, I will try it before the year ends.

Could work off the old chestnut of nuclear radiation or some weird ooze, then the ants start to mutate in various ways. Some become much smarter, have some grow bigger (with a few extra big ones to eat people), some of them can eat through metal, a few fire ants to start fires. We could go nuts. Maybe go through a city that's falling apart, or a destroyed alien colony that was wiped out with a few ant hills remaining.

Oh hell, I just want revenge on them ever since they got in my car and refuse to leave.
There's an awesome 1954 film called 'Them!', Which is exactly about what you have described right there. Great film but the only reference I've seen of them is the giant ants in Fallout and that's it. A shame really.

Little spiders are fine. Little spiders outside my house are fine. Little spiders inside my house are borderline fine because they will soon be outside spiders. But let me ask you this... when was the last time you saw a little spider in a video game?
I don't think we have seen little spiders in a video game. But how bout this. A level in a horror game where you have to escape from a swarm of spiders! Hundreds and hundreds of the little bastards.

Yeah I loved Primal Rage and Turok! They were great games!! By the way, may I interest you in a game I found called The Stomping Land?

It's a multiplayer survival game with dinosaurs. It's in alpha right now but it looks good so far!! :D

I agree. We're long overdue for a resurgence of dinosaurs in games.

Chickens.
It's time they made a comeback.
Haven't seen any murderous chickens in a long time.
But then, the most Legend of Zelda game I got to play was Twilight princess and they weren't really that dangerous.
And then they Wii came.

Werewolves . Gaming has a shameful lack of werewolves .

We got a giant repetoir of monsters but we stick with vampires and zombies . Really what the fuck . Let's start pulling some mythical creature out of their sleep and raise hell.
What we need is a game like Legendary. But actually good. Just chuck ALL the monsters in, like thief.
Throw in some Greek and Viking gods for good measure. And guitar solo's.

I think the KKK would be a great villain. You don't really need too much background so you can shoot them. They're racist, anti-Semitic anarchists who look like ghosts. And since they're actually American's for the most part, it would take a lot of unwanted hatred away from the Russians. And besides, it would sell well oversea AND in America. You're an American shooting other Americans.
GENIUS!!!

With it's worryingly growing trend, my money is on Microsoft.

Seriously, I hope for dinosaurs. We need to kill lots of dinosaurs again.

I always liked "Aliens" as a go-to enemy. Had a lot of great times shooting the Covenant. Shooting the Locusts. Shooting the Xenomorphs... ok not as many with the Xenomorphs but that is neither here nor there.

Robots would be good. They don't need to be humanoid.

Robotics dominate film & sci-fi novels, but they seem a little underused in video games, there zombies and aliens rule the roost.

Us.

With the way the industry increasingly seems to like adding all kinds of cameras and sensors to better monitor us, euhm, I mean, provide better experiences, gaming devices will soon gain the ability to scan and digitize anyone with the temerity to get near them into ingame models.

Would be kinda neat to play some military fps online and instead of the stock soldier faces, you see you own buddies getting turned into bloody sieves.

Also, imagine the possibilities for porn games.

the way the developers of AAA gaming think these days it will probably be pollution, and greenhouse gases done by islamic terrorists who are funded by the communists lead by hitlers long lost great grandson. The communists made an army of zombies since all their needs are the same and to find out the ending to my politically incorrect paragraph you will need to buy the dlc for one of three color coded endings.

I think I about covered every possible stereotype for AAA gaming.

Zombies are fine in games, just you get the usual Tank Zombie, Spitter Zombie etc etc. I want a proper survival zombie game with walking zombies where you have to survive. Search a town for supplies to board windows and make weapons. The idea is to just survive and find survivors to gain skills to survive more. Maybe aiming towards barricading areas and building a compound etc That would be cool.

OT: Next big enemy, super heros.....make a damn Marshal Law game. Would be awesome. Im a hero hunter, i hunt heroes. (kills a hero) not found any yet. :)

I hope we go through a phase with giants. Although, I could just be biased because of Shadow of The Colossus, but we need way larger enemies in more games because the current consoles and PC's are capable of rendering it as long as the game uses an efficient rendering process (as SoTC proved years ago). Seriously, I want to use rocket launchers to knock down massive giants that smash up cities! That would be awesome! And not as a boss, as regular enemies. The final boss could be an entire fucking moon in orbit.

Seriously, someone get on that ricky tick! I want this game!

EDIT: Extra points to whoever gives the Moon boss a smiley face.
