im watching braveheart and it got me thinking about the nobles who choose to take money and land if they surrendered.

what would you do, would you fight for what you know is right or betray it in exchange for wealth

personally i would rather die fighting for what i believe

what would you do?

Well, here's a hint. I have money, and it turns out not to be as big a deal as everyone thinks. So, what the hey? I'll be respected and cool.

There's sometimes more to it than that. If I stand up and rebel against a much more powerful enemy, I'll not only endanger myself, but also my comrades. And martyrdom is not as effective as you think: my hopes and beliefs WILL die with me.

If I take the money or whatever, sure, I'd be a sellout. I'd hate myself for it: but this way, I can appeal to my "enemy's" good side, and search for a more democratic way of fighting for my beliefs.

dying with honour would be far better than living in tyranny. its also like PoWs in WWII they would rather die trying to escape than living in captivity.

atleast if you died you wouldnt live the rest of your life in guilt

Would you let your spirit die for money?

I'd go with honour. I'm not particularly nationalistic, but in some other context, like among my friends, I would never sell out. Money is stupid.

Honor is the obvious ideal choice, but I think money has more sway and relevancy today. Besides, if it's something you feel that strongly about, it is almost better to be alive if you want to have an opportunity to change it.

in response to a few of the comments.

an intelligent enemy would never give you enough money/power that would give you the ability to overpower them.

i think if you sell-out your ideology then your life loses all meaning, die for your your cause and you can die knowing you have done what is right

today the world is run by greed so its hard to imagine. also we are lucky we live in a fair society where there is no aggressor to fight against

Essayons! Siempre tentare, I'm a Combat Engineer, demolitions tech, specialized in urban warfare, and expert marksman. You don't get into my line of work if money is anywhere on your priority list.

but I'm also a Nihilist. Which means that death is beautiful to me.

I'm still confused on why you got banned, but it just made you awesome. Kind of like Medal Of Honor. *add*

Eh...you have to be more specific about what, exactly, that entails. Whether it's a literal or metaphysical thing.

That's very understandable, but unless a 3rd faction enters the conflict in your favour, utterly pointless. If it was just me, I wouldn't mind so much. But I'd also be killing my Brothers in arms. And what about my kids? Will they take that sitting down? No - I may as well shoot them myself. What about my Grandchildren? They'll no sooner be able to talk than be taught how to configure a car bomb. But what good will that do? A few cheap kills against other men who may very well be in the same position (i.e - forced into war).

Then, innocent non-combatants will be dragged in. Either through conscription, crossfire, or otherwise. How will society cope? Will we even bother teaching our young arithmatic when there's still enemies standing? The whole thing will collapse, just because I was too proud.

Is the democratic approach better? That depends on the circumstances. Worst case scenario; we'll live as slaves, and be refused education. The best we can hope for is the afromentioned 3rd faction to pop up. Anything better than that however, we will live, be educated and slowly build our foundations for a political stance. At first, we won't be treated as equals. We won't be employed, we'll be given the worst of digs, living conditions will be unbearable.

But we'll work extra hard. We'll outshine the "enemy" in terms of education and skill. They'll HAVE to employ us in good jobs, and that's where it starts. Slowly, but surely, thrive. Not in my lifetime, maybe not in my kid's either, but eventually.

I'll take that over an endless conflict anyday.

I'll take money. Honor can't buy food, heating, cleanliness, entertainment, medicine, hookers.....etc etc

Besides, what is considered "honorable" depends on the moral codes of the time and culture, so your "honorable" actions will be rendered moot within a few hundred years.

Die for what I believe in, yet in the current status of world afars I wouldn't die in Iraq. (support the troops anyways.)

I'd take the wealth. Sorry, I value my life too much to die in order to alter the world slightly, so people can continue to hate each over in a mildly less oppressive climate.

Besides, nothing is permanent- any changes I make will be overruled by the next charismatic dickhead our genes keep throwing at us.
