I'm a total insomniac, so I sometimes get a little jumpy at night, and if things get bad enough I'll go into one of two states,

1. A strange subconscious state where I'm extremely calm and sometimes very artistically inspired.

2. Every once in a while I just ratchet into a full on shit-storm of terror for no discernible reason. I end up freaking out, jumping at every creak, running around my house, turning on every light I can, checking under the bed, the whole bit. It's wicked weird considering I'm usually pretty collected.

EDIT: I just realized I'm having one of those moments right now. It doesn't help that I'm reading this thread.

This shit happened when I was 5.

Ok, I'm having a weird dream. In the dream, the landscape is green with a few trees. On the ground are trap doors with little pictures beside them. One was scambled eggs, another was a video game. There were so many I couldn't even remember them. Well, I found one that had a picture of a heart. I opened it and slid down into it. It felt like a tunnel. All of a sudden, I feel something grasping at my legs and pulling itself up. A second or two later, a strange, oozy headed figure is staring me in the face.

Here comes the fucked up part. I woke up in a cold sweat, sat up, wiped my forehead and laid back down. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I saw that same fucking monster from the dream floating above me near the ceiling. It stared at me with demonic red eyes and pointed at my chest.

I'll never forget those eyes....

Two things come to mind.

The first was right after I had just gotten my first hermit crabs ever. Hermies are nocturnal creatures, so they move around a lot at night. That's all fine, but I kept hearing this sound that sounds like an empty soda can falling onto wood or tile. I kept looking around, but I don't have any cans in my room, nor any hard material for it to fall on. So it was such a weird sound. Finally, after about three times of it happening, I realized that one of my crabs had been scaling a completely vertical wall, very carefully, before retarding out at the top and falling shell first onto the rocks that were at the bottom of the cage. Silly thing.

The second was when I hear strange rustling in my room. I didn't quite know what it was, but I slept with my fan on so I supposed it was some paper being blown by the wind. Two nights later, I entered the room late at night after a long bout of Timesplitters. I saw this rat-like thing scale my curtains with godspeed. Scared the crap out of me. Turned out to be a baby possum that had snuck in.

I once was lieing on my stomach in my bed, propped up on my arms reading. I had to stay up all night for some reason that I cant remember (i think it was a bet or dare or something). So anyway I'm reading and its about eleven. I look up from the page and it is 2 in the morning. I look back down to see that I was on the exact same page I had been. Apparently 3 hours passed between the last sentence I remember reading and the one I read when I came to. But I hadnt moved a muscle, I was in the exact same position, and I didnt black out. I remember reading it as if everything was perfectly normal. If I hadnt looked at the clock I probably wouldnt have noticed.

were you or the dog the "her" being refered to?

also not exactly a weird thing but everyonce in a while I'll either wake up or won't be able to fall asleep because I suddenly have either a picture or a poem in my head and I absolutly must draw/write it before I can sleep.

it was the dog, which is incredibly creepy because it was as soon as I started to get relaxed again and it was while I was cuddling (yes, I used the word cuddling) my dog, good girl somehow felt I was scared and guarded me the whole night, didn't help me sleep though...

Hmmm well I once had a nightmare (That wasn't even that scary) and woke up screaming. I've had horrible nightmares since but nothing has ever made me do that before.

Man, I don't even know where to start, I've got so many sleeping problems.

But I'll get to those later since the thread title is "weird things that happen at night" (or osmething like that). So I'll start with a story.

To start, my family is broken up now, but many years ago my mom (who's hobby was painting portraits) used to store he paintings in our one of our houses more empty rooms. We always called it the painting room (hence it's function), and when we were young, me and my brother weren't allowed back there.

But once after that, once we had that room livable, I had to stay there when I caught the flu, so I wouldn't pass it on. It was a pretty miserable night for me, needless to say. Well once I felt I was finally ready to fall asleep, I set the sleep-timer on the TV to 60 minutes, and laid back, and closed my eyes. After what felt like only 5 minutes, I heared a small click, and the room was suddenly dark. A bit startled, I spun around and stared at the darkness right in front of me. I can't say why, but I felt a tension... for some reason I didn't reach for the remote next to me on my bed. I stood there still, trying to adjust my night-vision.

Now this may sound a little hysterical, but I'm being dead serious. And you know if this happened to you, it would freak you the hell out too! So there I was sitting completely still...until something happened that made me almost jump out of my skin. There standing over my bed was what seemed to be an extremely tall, figure with long arms standing over my bed....dancing...just swaying back and forth at me, and waving it's out-stretched armsforward then backwards. As you can imagine I was pretty scared at that point. I finally got my nerve back, garbbed my flashlight, and darted as fast as I could out of that room.

I know you're probably thinking that that could be accounted for in a number of completely logical ways...and I'm really hoping that thats the case...It's only happened to me once after that. But that incident haunted me till I was 13...I'm 14...

On a much brighter note, I have also been known to sleepwalk, and sometimes fall asleep near people, sit back up, engage in casual conversation, and lay back down....and not be able to remember any of it.

But what happened to me only recently was probably worse. I've always had pretty bad asthma, but the side effects of the drug I was on, is what really got to me, after I started taking it. Besides all of the emotional, and erm... trying not to come across as a wuss, but it has that sort of effect on you when you are on a steroid, and an anxiety medication at the same time. Yea, anyways besides all of the emotional stuff, the physical stuff took it's toll. I couldn't sleep for a long time. , and I was really messed up then, I was convinced it would reach a boiling point, and I would eventually die, I was trying to come to grips with death, and was terrified to sleep at all. Waking up not being able to braethe isn't a pleasant thing to wake up to. I was short of breath through the entire ordeal. The lack of sleep didn't help either, was completely out of it alot of the time, and I would constantly see stuff that wasn't there. And while I was digging in my medicine cabinet I would almost always see my moms cat (who didn't live there0 scuttle across the floor. It all looked very vivid.

That was one of the worst times of my life, and I'm still trying to get my asthma under control, and I'm doing better now...damn, I just realized how long this post is...

But yea, thats a few strange things that come to mind.
