The tricks take forever to learn and aren't very cool to look at, the actual board is a redundant form of transportation and the people that do it (or at least the ones I have met) are douches that love to attack anyone that uses rollerblades (me).

The -being attacked by a bunch of idiots riding a 2/4 with wheels- thing doesn't really bother me, I just cant comprehend why skateboarding is so popular these days. Do you guys know why? Do you skateboard?

Because it's fun?

I don't know. I've tried it, but it wasn't for me. I personally think the tricks do look pretty neat, but only when actually done right.

And I've never had the pleasure of meeting someone who skateboards often, so I can't speak to their personality.

Chicks dig scars?

Skateboarding was a simple fad that people tried to turn into a status symbol. "If you can't do this then you're not cool" That's all it is, some kids trying to prove they're better than the rest of us because they can do it.

Many friends of mine find it a perfectly fine mode of transportation. For instance, you can't exactly get off a bike and bring it indoors. Also, it's a community thing, and it has a distinct culture built around it.

Remember, two sides to the coin;

What's so cool about rollerblading?

The tricks take forever to learn and aren't very cool to look at, the actual shoe(?) is a redundant form of transportation and the people that do it (or at least the ones I have met) are douches that love to attack anyone that uses skateboards.

The -being attacked by a bunch of idiots- thing doesn't really bother me, I just cant comprehend why rollerblading is so popular these days.
As for why IDK, I've only used it when I've lost the dare to go down a really steep hill. That's why I'm a surfer!

Aren't most hobbies a waste of time at their most basic levels? Just something to occupy us between sleep and work?

true and very sad
Not sad, it simply is. Gaming is much the same way, it serves no real purpose, wait, no, it just serves no purpose real or unreal except to derive enjoyment, which skateboarding does as well, plus attracts other people.

I used to skateboard. I could ask you the same question though... What's so cool about rollerblading?

Since most people that skateboard these days are in there teens, my understanding of it is that teens will do anything to feel that their place in society is the top whether they would like to admit it or not. Although no one I used to skate with had a problem with rollerbladers, that part is a bit new and perhaps just something that happens in your area. I believe I could use what I said earlier to answer that question as well. They want to feel like they're on top.

But to your original question however, the tricks do take insane amounts of time to learn, and it takes a lot of practice, but the feeling you get that first time you successfully pull it off is such a big feeling of accomplishment.

What you said about the tricks not being that much fun to look at however, that's just personal opinion.

What's so cool about anything? People just have different tastes in their hobbies, and for one person to put their hobby above another persons hobby isn't just specific to skateboarding and rollerblading. It happens with everything else as well... In fact I had some one try to put their hobby of Nascar above my hobby of gaming. That got shoved down his throat rather quickly.

Just do what you do best, and stick with it. If you enjoy rollerblading, then it's more power to you man, don't let some punks put you down.

Let me just say this: I skateboard.

I skateboard because it allows some very close friends and I quality time to bond,[footnote]Friends who, might I add, I had not seen in 3 years.[/footnote] I skateboard because it's a great way to exercise, and I skateboard because, most importantly, it's fun.

That doesn't mean I'm a pretentious asshat who feels the need to look cool and shock everyone into a state of awe, nor am I constantly looking to fight rollerbladers.

I do it because I enjoy it, and assuming that we're all pompous tarts makes about as much sense as assuming all gamers are anti-social creatures of the basement who sustain on pizza rolls and World of Warcraft.

No worries, that wasn't aimed at you (or, at least I didn't intend for it to be. My apologies if I came off as otherwise.)

I fully acknowledge that a lot of us seem to act like... for lack of a better word... asses, and I appreciate that you didn't imply we all were. :p

I never understood it either, but it never bothered me though the typical skater I have met (and I am in no way saying this applies to everyone) was just an egotistical little shit.

I tried it once. It wasn't for me. Mainly because I couldn't do shit on it, but I also got bored with it and wanted to go back in and play Kingdom Hearts some more.

I do skateboard, and have been doing it for years, even though I suck. I'd say though, that the reason it's popular, is because it's fun. The people who think it makes them superior, and think that people who can't do a 540 McTwist suck, don't know shit about skating.

Then again, neither do I. I just know that you should have fun, and not be a douche.

We need to get those kids to stop skating on the sidewalk!

Seriously though, it's a hobby. Just that.

It's hard, real hard. I'll give it that. Not for me, but those with the insane coordination and reflexes to look good doing it certainly earn props from me.
