Because they think its fun.

Trust me, skateboarding is my brothers life because its fun, the same way that video games are people's lives on this site.

Ignore them, if you find them annoying. People who do things to look cool will find themselves an empty person.

Chicks dig scars?

Skateboarding was a simple fad that people tried to turn into a status symbol. "If you can't do this then you're not cool" That's all it is, some kids trying to prove they're better than the rest of us because they can do it.
Let me just say this: I skateboard.

I skateboard because it allows some very close friends and I quality time to bond,Friends who, might I add, I had not seen in 3 years. I skateboard because it's a great way to exercise, and I skateboard because, most importantly, it's fun.

That doesn't mean I'm a pretentious asshat who feels the need to look cool and shock everyone into a state of awe, nor am I constantly looking to fight rollerbladers.

I do it because I enjoy it, and assuming that we're all pompous tarts makes about as much sense as assuming all gamers are anti-social creatures of the basement who sustain on pizza roles and World of Warcraft.
I hope I didnt make you think that, I said that the guys I know are douches, other skaters such as yourself might actually be nice people..
The skateboarders that you've seen seem like the ones that just have a skateboard to look cool and get drugs.

The kind that serious skateboarders make fun of.

Why? I skateboard because its really fun. Granted I'm not very good and now that I'm getting old I don't heal as fast but I still do it.

Also, a bike you have to haul around and rollerblades you got to strap on. You just jump on your skateboard and go.

As far as the rollerblade vs skate board argument- Its a matter of territory. It takes a bit longer to set up for a trick on a board and its really aggravating when a rollerblader cuts in on you. (I got the scars to prove it) Just be aware of whats going on around you and everyone can get along.

I also rollerblade but only for hockey.

Remember, two sides to the coin;

What's so cool about rollerblading?

The tricks take forever to learn and aren't very cool to look at, the actual shoe(?) is a redundant form of transportation and the people that do it (or at least the ones I have met) are douches that love to attack anyone that uses skateboards.

The -being attacked by a bunch of idiots- thing doesn't really bother me, I just cant comprehend why rollerblading is so popular these days.
As for why IDK, I've only used it when I've lost the dare to go down a really steep hill. That's why I'm a surfer!
Well good for you and your access to a surfable coast. Bastard!
(No offense I'm just really really envious...and petty. We got waves you can ride here but you gotta do it in between ice flows and 50mph+ winds and those aren't really that good)

What your issue is, is not with skateboarding itself but a modicum of people who use skateboards. These people are going to take advantage of the fact that they can do things that other people can't; usually by rubbing it in other peoples faces. So this is more of an argument along the lines of "What's so cool about you?"

I used to skateboard back in middle school for a few months. I wasn't that good and could only do a couple tricks...on a good day. But it was fun and gave me something to do. Plus some of my friends also skateboarded so it was a social thing too.

What's that? I can't hear you over the sound of soft sand and clear sunny skies! Oh no I have to go put sun screen on another beautiful passer-by.

I don't know, I dislike the general community behind it. Although, every single fight with a skater I have ever gotten into ends quickly with me saying "you wear girls pants".

Ha. Well we got..uh...smog...and...uh our beaches have glass on them. But that's ok. The windsurfing here is incredible. Can get 30 feet of air on a good day.

Skateboarding is a pretty good mode of transportation for me.

I go to college, and my campus is huge, and it takes forever to get from one end to the other by walking. Since there are lots of stairs, a bike or rollarblades don't really do the trick, because with a bike, you have to carry the thing up stairs, which is a pain, and with rollarblades you have to find a way around, and use a ramp, which are always in out of the way places at my school.

Having the skateboard is just much easier and more convenient in my opinion.

Also, I don't do any tricks or anything, it's strictly a mode of transportation.
true but my rollerblades are actually a near indestructible shoe that can have the wheels hooked into it so for me its a best way to go...

I saw some episodes of Scarred on MTV a few years ago. Those skaters can get some pretty nasty wounds. =\
