What's so great about Skyrim?

What's so great about all the other game releases that people get hyped up over? Certain games appeal more to different types of people. Many people get super worked up about something they think is going to be grand. I'm going to admit that, once, when i was a lot younger and a LOT more stupid than I am now, I thought Halo 2 was going to be ridiculously awesome. That was a letdown. Since then, I'm a lot more reserved in my hopes for new titles, and usually don't look too much beyond a trailer, some screens, and box art when I pick games. As a veteran of the Elder Scrolls, I am excited to see the next evolutionary step in a series that I don't regret giving several hundred (maybe near a thousand, I don't know) hours to. I won't say that Skyrim is going to be the best game ever, because that would mean (to me at least) that either I would quit playing games immediately afterward, or I would meet an untimely demise in a very uncool and probably painful fashion. Basically, quit paying attention to all those people who can't spell and get worked up over every major release, and do some research for yourself to see if it's the right game for you. Cheers

Because Bethesda has a huge hype machine that sometimes seems like it could make a Bedouin giddy with excitement about buying a sandbag.

But it doesn't work on everyone. I don't buy it. When it comes to Bethesda, for me it's easy to tell when Todd Howard or Pete Hines, or anyone else at Bethesda is bullshitting people about their games: it's only when their lips are moving. Is that fair? Not at all, but enough of that BS has come from them that I don't take any chances. I'm expecting Skyrim to be the definition of mediocrity, just like I thought its predecessor was.

Of course, I could be proven completely wrong. That would be nice. Then, and only then would you see any excitement from me at the prospect of playing this game.

Given Bethesda's previous record, the game will be very glitchy, prone to crashes, and full of terrible AI and will only be fixed after patches
Well aren't you a field of daisy's and buttercups?

Bethesda have even said that the AI has received an upgrade and from the looks of the world and how the character moves on the world, no long will we be, which i like to call "float walking"

Your being just as bad as the people who are hyped for the game, they are saying why it will be good, and you are saying why it will be bad. If they bother you so much don't come on Skyrim threads? Sheesh.
Honestly, until Bethesda says they've improved their QA, any statement about improving AI or any other singular aspect isn't dealing with their company's major problem.

It's a fair criticism of the company's works, similiar to the flak Obsidian gets for it.

I mean really. Just wait for the game to come out. It's not going to be the best game ever, this is Bethesda, not BioWare or Blizzard.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha. I agree too many skyrim threads as hyped as I am - but you say that BIOWARE and BLIZZARD would be the ones to release the best games ever? I'm trying as hard as I can to not be a dick - but its not possible. I love bioware and have a mild respect for blizzard, but their games are on the exact same goddamn level as bethesda games, if not a little under (mainly because of DA2 and all the retcons leaked from ME3). As for blizzard well its hard to go wrong when you release a 10 million player skinner box game - but oh wait, they're losing just under a million players each quarter. No goddamn game will be the best ever, no matter what Dev it comes from. Bioware sells wife simulators with RPG elements, and I accept this even though I love them, and I've not seen an original idea out of Blizzard since... eh, ever. But then again I pay little attention to them because they are so unoriginal. Snap.

Know what is cool in a trailer? Fighting a finger the size of Texas!
Right... I'm excited for the game but really, it looks like the style that i hate anime for. Oh? You're fighting a massive god thing with no build up. I guess thats cool. So, you can fight off a finger bigger than a city, but you still have me fighting hordes of minions that are the size of regular humans? ok. I guess my deus ex machina power level just isn't high enough when I'm fighting those little guys. Now, in what fashions should I fight these epic monsters? Should I have to run around, timing my attacks and avoiding lethals blows in a majorly epic fight? oh.. no... QTE's... I guess I feel epic fighting a monster that is larger than the earth with no buildup explaining why I have trouble killing humansized enemies yet can defeat this massive thing with no problem by mashing X... Woo.

Its all about goddamn context. Want to kill vivec in morrowind? You better be a goddamn good level or have the best gear that has taken you hours of work to build up to so you can get that second wraithguard - Want to kill a massive god monster in a game like Wrath? Eh. Just hit the buttons as they flash up.
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to it, but mashing buttons as they flash up has /nothing/ in comparison to planning out how to take a damn dragon down in real time, and even calling in your own dragon to help.

Play Monster Hunter.
I have a Monster Hunter game, and it's very fun, but the dragons were disappointing. I like the water bosses, and the Barroth, but the actual dragons? Mreh. The best dragon fight in history always has been/always will be the second flyer in Shadow of the Colossus.

As much as I'm a huge and I mean HUGE Elder Scrolls fanboy (I've been gushing over them since 1996 when I first played arena and then Daggerfall), these "OMG Skyrim will be best game ever made!" and "What's the big deal about Skyrim? seriously?" threads are getting annoying.

Stop it, internet.

Dunno im standing with you OP.

Too much fanboyism lurking around the whole internet. Will it be a good game? Yeah i would think so. Do i need every person and their mothers to proclaim it like a god-given miracle? No, it would be bad for it in the long run.

Since TES has a huge fanbase, it would IMO be counter-productive to spurt it out every damn chance you get. It really irks people like me who hasnt tried any of the games but would like to test the waters without getting pushed into the deep end of the pool.

As a player of Fallout 3/New Vegas, with 3 being my first Bethesda title that i actually sunk my teeth into, im gonna try Skyrim.

My only question is integrating into TES series gonna be a difficult learning curve for me?

Also i consistently hear that i dont need to play Oblivion/other TES games to get the story of Skyrim because of the series having self-contained stories and at best makes mild (elaborate please) references towards older games of the series. Can somebody confirm this?

Sorry for putting my stuff into this OP i dont want to make another thread for relatively simple question for TES fans.

Oh look, its this thread again

OT: I dont know, something about Dragons and eating random vegetation. It looks pretty cool. I played a bit of Oblivion for the first time a few days ago. I actually really liked it, and this seems like an extension on that.

In conclusion, people are excited for Skyrim because I enjoyed Oblivion.

Because it seems to take Oblivion's open world freedom with an overhaul of the leveling system and combat to be my entertaining and fast paced. It is a gorgeous looking game, great sound design based on the previews I have see. It will have tons of depth and content, a (over)active modding community to add to it.

It looks like it is a deep, rich fantasy rpg that is pretty to look at and fun to play. Seems a good enough reason to me to get a game.

...I'm really glad I just started to poke my head into these gaming forums again today, because if I had to see that much hype outside of my general group of TES loving irl friends, I'd probably have gone insane.

And not pre-bought Skyrim.

But from my own perspective? I love TES (for better or for worse--and yes, this includes all of the infamous flaws the series is known for), as well as the open world gameplay and the sheer amount of things to do that it gives you. In Oblivion, I sunk way too many hours into that thing, and I spent more time exploring dungeons, gathering treasures, beating up demons, stealing food, picking flowers, and playing interior decorator to my amazing array of (stolen) houses that I didn't care one bit about the main quest. Well, okay, I did spend time closing Oblivion gates and doing Guild quests, but after I dropped the mcguffin character on the mountaintop shrine, I didn't give the main story a second glance, and just had fun running around in a huge sandbox fantasy world.

Skyrim seems to be an improvement of Oblivion (though still not matching Morrowind, probably, but what can really?) with a bigger sprawly world and dragons to beat up or something. I'm actually less enthused about the dragons and more interested in the wonderful dungeons (And yes, they did look samey after a while in Oblivion, but I also loved Diablo 1 and could play it again and again, so there we go) and towns I can explore. If you're the sort of person who likes to spend a lot of time exploring the wilderness, and doesn't mind a few issues with the uncanny valley, then Skyrim might be your game.

But if you are more of an instant gratification sort of person, then run away as fast as you can. TES games are formulaic when you have to get them going (and I always hate it when I start the main quest, because I could usually care less about the plot), and generally slow to start. Once you HAVE them started, though, it's buckets of fun if you like taking your time, exploring, and don't mind a few issues.

Unfortunately, it seems that all good experiences have to be marred by a bunch of raving fanboys at one time or another...

I find it interesting that somehow, in the past two days, suddenly one of my biggest pet peeves about discussions like this is when someone does that thing where they're quoting someone else, but they make them sounds stupid by misspelling words ("EVAR") or adding "hurr durr" to the end.

I mean, it was always dumb, but lately it's just started to drive me completely bugfuck.

Talk like a person, spell shit correctly, and don't resort to dishonest mockery when discussing someone else's opinion.

TES is just a series of games well-known for being, well... excellent...

At time(s) of release, I would say that Morrowind, Oblivion and the like, were "Game of the year" winners... So, it's a pretty steep mountain to climb if Skyrim isn't that good...
I would say it's more about the hype, than anything else...

I, like you, played Fallout 3 and NV, and am yet to touch an elder-scrolls game... So, I dunno really...

Put this post a week back and ask why MW3 is "so good"
Put this post a month (or so) back and ask why BF3 is "so good"

It's just one of "those" things you can't argue...

Okay, it's official:

I mean really. Just wait for the game to come out. It's not going to be the best game ever, this is Bethesda, not BioWare or Blizzard. It's going to be the same medival Fantasy game that every other Elder Scrolls game is. Just give it a rest everybody!

-Vid Snip-
Bioware and Blizzard are nothing special.

You seriously just tried to fight fanboyism with double fanboyism.
Really? Mentioning two companies with good track records is fanboyism? I didn't bring up any specific games, or gush endlessly about them. But my point is that all this ridiculous hype is not good for any game, because it will never live up to these expectations. I don't think I've ever seen a game with this much fan hype.
You haven't really given any reasons for your opinion beyond "A lot of people like it" when you mentioned that your reasoning behind Skyrim "It's not going to be the best game ever" is that it's not made by either of two companies that you like. That's fanboyism. Also, judging by your summation of The Elder Scrolls games just being generic medieval fantasy I must assume that you either haven't played most of them or you REALLY didn't pay attention.
