XIII had some awesome snow levels. And the surface parts in Penumbra were awesome as well. And I like the Overlord II starting area :)

If done right, snow can really work well, just like any environs can. But it should not be done just to look pretty, there should be actual use for it.

It's a change from the boring grey and brown of endless corridors. And a bunch of colours show up really well against snow. Red, for example...

I think its because its not done as much, so its different.

I personally think Snow Environments would be Awesome for Survival Horror Games.

Think about it, sure you can get attacked by something in the dark.
But your all alone, in the cold trying to make it to some kind of shelter, slowly dying from the cold your body is beginning to shut down, and then your attacked.

Haven't played it, but I'm pretty sure that's what you mean.

IF they were using the latest tech to make make snow behave like actual snow (Melting and snowdrifts ) then there is reason to get exicted.
But thats a big if and its like jsut to become a white version of concrete that plays a different sound file when you walk on it.

The only good snow map i know is in MGO cos their is sometimes a storm which make visabilty low and if you are useing white camo you can blend in with the snow and ambush people

Ah ninja'd! lol. I was playing Cryostasis last night as it would happen. I quite like it, it's a good break from traditional fps games (most of my kills have been from punches or my axe). And yeah, the snowy enviroment there is excellent. Instead of life you have heat, and you always need to find sources of heat to stay alive... lights, steam, little fires, some electrical components etc. Looks fantastic when you turn something on to heat a whole room and as the temp rises, the frost starts melting and all the icicles fall and break. And of course, frost zombies are fun...

In general tho, snowy levels are basically a "tech demo" because to make falling snow look realistic isn't tough. You've got foot prints. Frost on stuff/frosty breath. Possibly cold mechanics.

Gunfire rings, are you listening,
on the map, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
such a spectacular fight,
pwning in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the blue team,
nuked those noobs with my raybeam,
They sing their swan song,
as we go along,
ganking in a winter wonderland.

In the red base we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is on our side.
He'll get fragged and we'll say: "oh man"
"wut a nub, u shud rly lrn 2 hide"

Later on, we'll perspire,
as we sprint, under fire
To face unafraid,
the enemies we've made,
winning in a winter wonderland.

When it snows, ain't it thrillin',
When teh 1337 get a killin'
We'll be taking names, in our snow map games,
T-baggin' in a winter wonderland.
That right there makes snow maps worth it. Good job, Thief, you made my morning.

I don't know, maybe it's because their game lacks so much innovation that they have to obsess over a snow map. Or because snow looks really cool when done right and they are showing off amazing graphics.

Incidentally, snow maps can be the worst sometimes:

Hate.

I thought the Killzone 3 demo looked incredibly boring. They've traded brown and grey for just white. Some FPS developers just don't get it D:

it makes the colour white appear in games that normally just have brown and grey also snow makes everything better within reason
