Yeah, back in the day Sonic had the best graphics and tightest control of any of the available platformers, his games made Mario look like an unwieldy tank.

The blazing speed (at the time), mixed with very well paced level design.

You weren't just "going fast" from left to right. There was some very tight platforming segments. Particularly in the Casino zones.

They were excellent platformers, with a distinctive character and villain and memorable music. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is still one of my favorite games ever for adding more exploration elements and incorporating two extra characters on top of that.

It was fun. Pure and simple. It was fast paced, frenetic, and never seemed to get old.

To me, that question might as well be 'What's the appeal of Halo: Reach?' or 'What's the appeal of Mass Effect?' or any modern games. At the time, it was one of the big titles, and was pretty damn awesome (and the first game I ever played!).

I can understand the question better if you meant it as 'What is the appeal of Sonic the Hedgehog today?'.

By today's standards, it obviously doesn't have anywhere near the appeal it used to, but back then, it was the sh*t.

I was about 11 when I got Sonic the Hedgehog. It came with my Sega Mega Drive.

Imagine playing 8-bit platformers all your childhood. Then suddenly you're blazing along maps at the speed of sound, to some nifty music and awesome level design. Yeah... that caught my Saturday mornings for years to come. Well, at least until Sonic 3D, anyway.

He was part of a great games series.... in the 90s. He was a great mascot... in the 90s. He's kind of a "Had to be there at the time" kind of thing, like the happy mondays or every-day tracksuits. Seemed like a great idea at the time.
Every-day tracksuits were NEVER a great idea.

really? I always thought mario handled much better, especially at low speed sonic just was sluggish as hell, but even at high speed allot of the sonic games seemed like memorization since you would be running at full speed and suddenly SPIKES or an enemy would be in your way.

I guess you need tighter reflexes, then, as I thought it controlled great. Also, trying to get SuperSonic was maddening and fun.

Happy 3000th post by the way.

You had to be there, man.
Yeh, you will probably need to jump back in time to around the early 90's to know for sure. That, and revert back to being a child again. That's probably the best description I can give...:p
