I've only played Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
I kinda liked them all to be honest, and for different reasons. I guess Brotherhood is the most derivative and therefore the worst of the ones I've played. I loved the pirating in Black Flag. AC2 had the best story, but it also started a lot of the bad traditions in the series. I like how AC1 had a more "day in the job" approach to storytelling. It's the only one where you play an actual assassin, taking assassination contracts. And I enjoy the parsimony of the gameplay.

... whichever killed off Desmond.
I laughed so hard at that. Like, full on head-in-hands, breathless, banging-fist-on-my-desk laughter.

The gormless dullard stinks up four entire games with his pointless framing device memory machine strung along by some vague notion that he's training to be the star of a game set in modern times, clambers through a construction site or two, then touches a magic science soul brick and drops dead. What a fucking riot.

It got even funnier in the following games.
"Okay, so killing off Desmond must be an indication that they're finally abandoning that crap."
"Nope. Now we're going to give you a walking tour of a fictional video game developer office. Are you not thrilled?
"

Even the damn movie did it.
"So it's going to have agile assassination action in a historic setting, right? That's what the series in known for after all."
"Joke's on you dipshit. Here's Fassbender flailing about on the end of a robotic arm
."

At this point I'm practically convinced that the future memory machine framing device was the idea of the CEO's favourite nephew and anyone who tries to point out how shit it is gets summarily transferred to the QA department.

Best would be 4. From Brotherhood on to 4 I had pretty much stopped caring about the story. But 4 made me care at least a little about Edward and what was going to happen (although we always knew, unfortunate spoiler thanks again AC3.) And the gameplay was more of what worked with the pirate stuff thrown in as a bonus, whose goodness was almost entirely undone by ship stealth.

But the worst, the original. It needed to focus less on the beautiful graphics, and more on better gameplay. Exactly what AC2 nailed. And in the original the busywork was the most tedious crap ever to have to plow through to get to the good stuff. AC2 and onward added tons of further busywork... but they made it more fun to do and varied the types of busywork.

I could easily say Unity was the worst, but word of mouth was so bad I gave up on the series and never bought Unity or any further AC game.

Everything about the first AC works for me. Go here, kill these guys, go there, kill these guys now, the end. It's simple, I like the way the story unfolds, I like the character, no stupid shit to distract you, the game isn't bloated with stupid shit like the sequels. No "customize your outfit!" or "collect these stupid things to unlock more stupid things!" or "complete these really shitty side quests!" crap. I wish it offered a fast travel option, though, because having to go to all these cities gets old when you try to replay the game.

I even like Desmond in the first game. Desmond works inside that building, he works when you just walk around that room, it's a nice break from the main game imo. In the sequels when you start running around with Desmond in modern times, yeah, that's complete shit.

For me, 2 is the best. Great story, beautiful architecture to crawl all over, passable early AC combat and great characters. The music was pretty great too. Unity has to be the worst mainline(non-handheld/phone) AC. It was a buggy hot mess that got outshone by Rogue on the previous hardware generation. Second place would be a tie between 4 and Brotherhood for best and Revelations for worst.

Ass Creed is just the COD of action-adventure games.

same shit every year, just with a few tweaks so as they can keep raking in the dough.

Playing the non-release build, Unity I preferred the most. Maybe Syndicate in second place, but not a fan of the bat-grapple gun, though it came in handy for a quick escape out of a blundered stealth situation.

Worst? I don't know, it couldn't have made enough of an impression to imprint on the memory.

I've never actually played these games, so my opinion is based upon which one is the most functional and well-balanced, and which one is the least.

For me it's AC2. As far as the worst, I guess I can say AC Unity, but I really haven't touched a Assassin's Creed game since Brotherhood. A majority of them are all about the same anyway.

OK, I haven't played the new generation ones. But for the others, I found 4 Assassin's Creed games very good. Checking some details here and there, I decided that the best one is AC Brotherhood, cause it's an improvement of AC II, which already was a huge improvement of AC 1. Brotherhood is similar to II, but everything that you knew it wasn't actually great from it and you simply let it pass cause that one was also great, now you can't complain of any of these things. I used to think AC II was the great. When I started playing it for the second time, I realized I only though that because the first time I had played it was amazing to see the improvement from the previous one. But going deep on it, everything on Brotherhood is more attached, it makes more sense, the characters who were abundant and somewhat superficial now have better arcs, and it is a lot more fun than any other game in the series. AC III and AC IV were also great, even better than AC II, but I don't think any of them can beat AC Brotherhood, because the latter is, in my opinion, the "most Assassin's Creed" of all Assassin's Creed.
And the worst is definitely AC Rogue. A mere copy of AC IV, except that It sucks. Being a Templar is pretty much the same as being an Assassin. Shay is a very generic character. It is too short. It has no considerable improvements. It doesn't work as well as its predecessor, even mecanichally. It's a fucked up, boring and cold version of AC IV. Oh, and the poison gas stuff simply sucks.
