I got wind waker for my... 14th birthday? And Twilight princess for my 16th or 17th. Very fun times all round!

The Battle for Wesnoth

In my opinion the best turn-based strategy game. It's simpler to grasp than most other strategy games out there, and since it's built on SDL, it runs on literally anything. The game also has an impressive amount of polish and it's easy to create campaigns for, thanks to which there are innumerable add-ons from simple maps up to 30-hour campaigns.

Skyrim fits this category too, since I got it as a gift from a relative and have played roughly 200 hours of it.

My favourite game of all time is entirely free. Dwarf Fortress of course. A game that costs money that i got freely though?
Good ol' KotOR. My brother bought it and I played the ever living re-playability out of it.

I got Uncharted 2, Fallout 3 and Final Fantasy 10 as gifts, all from the same friend. They are among the best video games I've played so far. FF10, top 5 of Gen 6, UC2 adn FO3, also top 5 of Gen 7.

Too bad we can't write about PS+. I bought the service so I can play online on the PS4. I didn't know they'd be throwing in a bunch of games. So far, the best of those has been Bioshock Infinite for the PS3. Sadly, I'd already played it on PC. It looked amazing. I downloaded and am playing it on PS3 anyway. It looks like the PC version with Vaseline spread over the screen. Still incredible what 7 year old tech can do.

I've had shit loads of free games over the years...from give aways online to the old classic of borrowing games from friends or people purchasing them for me. It's hard to pick the best since i've had plenty of big titles but i'm going to go with an old classic and say Skooldaze for the C64...a game that kept me playing it for years. Sure, the graphics suck the sound is poor and the story is basically goto school and hit some shields with your fist or catapult but it still calls to me from my past in a way that modern games cannot hope to achieve. Cheers Aunty shish...a life enriching purchase for sure!

Sleeping Dogs. I had cancelled my Xbox Live Gold subscription and still had enough time to nab it before my subscription ran out. In truth I had cancelled via my console months before but I failed to realise that there was an autorenew feature that I had to turn off through my account on the computer so we were still getting charged for a couple of months afterwards.

does four play count? :D

Id have to say Seven Kingdoms 1, and all those demo discs in the 90's that came with mags. some full versions like Jazz Jackrabbit and Rayman were great games.

I have 2, that gave me countless hours of joy that I will always remember.

1: From my uncle, he gave me his copy of Might and Magic 6, one of the best games Ive ever played and thoroughly enjoyed various times building up new teams/classes and beating the game again and again. Which up to this date is still one of my favorite games.

2: From my fiancee, Binding of Isaac. The amount of rage.....but at the other point the amount of happiness Ive gotten from this game is beyond recognition, she knows I like difficult games and this one...for the most part, takes the cake.

Honorable Mention: Last of Us from my mum, she knows I like Zambie games....and thought Id like it..I am forever indebted to her for the joy I had from beating that game on survivor mode haha :p

If you count games that came free with a PC, my favourite is definitely 'Goosebumps: Escape From Horrorland', a 1996 tie-in game with the 'Goosebumps' book series which is actually really really good and creepy. I had hours of fun gameplay out of it with my brother and cousins growing up, and a couple of years ago discovered I could run it on my Windows 7 laptop - cue instant nostalgia! Windows 8 won't run it though, which is yet another reason why Windows 8 is fail.

Honourable mention, if Visual Novels can count in this, goes to 'Digital: A Love Story', a wonderful and engrossing Visual Novel that I downloaded for free from Lemma Soft forums. If you haven't played it, go do it now. It is really good. [http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6729]
