Planescape: Torment, easily.

Then NWN manages to be the runner-up, solely because the modules took a good chunk of my gaming time years after its release.

My personal favourites are Icewind Dale II, Jade Empire and Planescape: Torment. But this is a rather subjective topic, there really isn't a 'best' RPG. It's really what you prefer in the realm of gameplay, story and direction, still the general consensus amoung the PC RPG crowd is that Planescape: Torment is the best.

If Grandia II was online I would definitely suggest it. Phantasy Star Online is another good classic one. There there are the big guys like WoW (don't like it myself), Oblivion Series, Guild Wars, KoToR, etc.

But hell..what you SHOULD do, is get zsnes (an online snes emulator) and play some Seiken Densetsu 3 with your friends instead :p

I personally use Linux ;)

So I'm used to not getting natives of my OS.

3 players? I'm going to pretend you didn't say that so I can respond anyway.

My top RPGs on the PC (keep in mind that some of these are FPS/RPGs):

Deux Ex
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Fallout
Fallout 2
Diablo 2
Baldur's Gate
Planescape: Torment

The first 2 Fallout games are lots of fun, and like $6 each on gog.com. They're both great, but the second one doesn't have an annoying time limit.

Also, I agree that Deus Ex is cool. I find it to be a little buggy, but the story is very interesting.

DDO (dungeons and dragons online) would be the one I most recomended. With 3 of you playing 95% if the content would be doable without ever needing anyone else as long as you took a fairly balanced party (1 tank, 1 caster and a healer). Its a great game and has more in common with the better class of single player game than most mmo's (in other words its not completely dumbed down with just one click combat and find x amount of y quests).

Preferably not oldschool, the other two loved diablo2 but really, I don't like it =D

Cheers for the suggestions, looking them up now.

knights of the old republic is looking pretty sweet, is it multiplayer?
I thought The Witcher was pretty good, in fact it was probably one of the best pc rpg's I've ever played, and it was a good 50 hours long on the first play through. Maybe more, I didn't keep track, but it took me a few months to finish.

I second Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, even though it isn't multiplayer.

Interesting, I'd put Stalker on the FPS side of the RPG/FPS border. Fallout 3's definately on the RPG side though.

Knights of the old Republic. The original.
You mean the SINGLE PLAYER ONLY one? as with the second one.

I would say that for an RPG would pretty much have to go MMO. But if you want an orly good single player one then I'd say Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2. If your computer is up for it then Witcher as well.

I'm fascinated by the number of people who apparently only read the thread title and didn't bother with the few lines of actual text. You can easily spot them since they keep reccomending one-player-only games...

As for multiplayer RPGs, I'd suggest Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2 and Diablo 2. Though RPGs are rarely multiplayer.

As far as MMOs go, Lord of the Rings Online is pretty solid, and I've heard some people getting good mileage with D&D Online...
