As the title says i'm trying to expand my horizons with comics, but i don't really know how. I've been trying to get into Marvel Stuff like Iron-Man, Deadpool, Spider-Man, and The Avengers but i can't seem to find material thats not bogged down with constant plots related to 15 differant comics from the last 30 years. I've already started reading the Star Wars Comics and Scott Pilgrim so help please?(BTW any Star Wars Fans who can recommend REALLY good Star Wars comics would be welcome to)

You're going to do better with Marvel than with DC, in this case.

Not because DC is bad. Far from it. DC is great. But Marvel has a convenient Recap page before every one of their comics. So you don't really have to have read all the back issues to understand what's going on.

I think so matter what (Marvel/DC) comics you read, you'll have to deal with at least some dense back story. Best thing is just to jump in and catch up as you go along.

And, ill recomend Preacher, cause thats what I do on every comic thread.

Marvel just started doing .1 issues, they are intended as good
jumping on points for stories. Not sure how well they are going to do since this JUST started, but the Spiderman one hits next week IIRC. I'd also echo grabbing the Civil War and Civil War: Spiderman trades since that is one of the BEST stories Marvel has done in ages. From there its an easy jump into "one More Day" (Which isn't the most popular story, but sets up a lot of the current tension), then the Back in Black trade and you're pretty much caught up. The last 6 months of issues have been restoring much of the status quo....

You don't have to buy Marvel or DC. There is a broad spectrum of series out there, and personally my favorite company is Image. My favorite superhero series and favorite series overall is Invincible. It has a great universe that you can easily catch up to. I don't even read any mainstream Marvel or DC, yet I read tons of fantastic series. I can recommend other if you have other interests of genres you enjoy.

Thor just got a new writer, I recommending asking for back issues on that run. Wolverine might take a second to get in to, but if you just ignore some of the backstory and read through the story itself, you can generally get through it pretty well. Iron Man is a good book right now, and a new story arc is starting up. In fact, recently they had an Iron Man .1 book, I recommend getting that if you want to jump on board.

Comics, generally, are filled with continuity. You'll have to force your way through some confusion and, eventually, you'll know what's going on and what's happened previously. If you do get confused, I recommend looking up back story. And if none of that interests you, this isn't your hobby.

But, generally, try and start a comic book series at the beginning of a writer's run on it. I also recommend getting limited series, since these are either completely bogged down with continuity or almost completely free of it.

Also, check out your local libraries. One of them near me has a ton of Batman, and pretty much nothing else, and the other has a little bit of every big Marvel title.
