Yes, this is going to be a bit of a rant, but feedback from ARMA players may help me understand and, dare I say, even like the game. It worked when I did this same thing with the old Fallot games, so it may work this time.

After reading PC Gamer magazine rant and rave about ARMA 2 and hearing that a free "demo" version had come out, I figured, "Hey, why not?"

I knew it was a war sim, and that's what I liked about it. It was a serious game. However, when I started playing it, it's been more of a frustration simulator than a war simulator.

Where to start: First of all, it is impossible to spot an enemy. How some people do it in the game escapes me. The landscape is green, the USMC wears green, the Russians wear green, the rebels wear green and there's 1,000,000 bushes, shrubs, brambles and patches of grass. How the fuck are you even supposed to spot an enemy? I mean, I don't expect the enemy to wear a bright red uniform, but if you look at Operation Arrowhead, there's a big visual difference between the rebels and the USMC. I have yet to notice any difference between the Russians and the Americans.

On top of that, the missions in the Armory suck. You have a precious few minutes to go someplace without a vehicle. So, by the time you rush over there, you're tired and out of breath, meaning that you can't aim well. Then, the AI who can magically spot you kill you from an unknown location, because all you can see is trees, bushes, grass, shrubs and the occasional rock. I was tasked to capture a vehicle that was being guarded by some kind of grenade launcher-toting armored car ... and all I had was an AK-47. And then, what was the last straw, in one of the armored vehicles, every single fucking time you move, you hear your character lifelessly shout in a loud voice "FORWARD!" or "RIGHT!" or "LEFT!" or "FAST!". Even just tapping one of the buttons to steady you drive causes this.

And, most importantly, the cherry on top: The multiplayer. If a server isn't empty, has more than 2,500 ping or is in Russian, it is populated by assholes. In one server, nobody would tell me shit about the objective or where anything was going on. Then, one of them tells me to play the tutorial. Well, I did, and you know what? The tutorial didn't teach me anything that would have told me what the fuck was going on in that mission.

I mean, I enjoy how it plays, but I just can't find a good game here. What am I doing wrong or what's the game doing wrong?

/end rant

I will keep it short since am typing via a touchscreen at the moment. Arms is not a game for everyone unlike cod or bf games. To help you spot enemies I would advise you to position yourself on higher ground and ensuring your view distance in your game settings is at least 2500 km. Trying to fight an uphill battle on a hill filled with tall grasses is suicidal and silly. Also it took me at least 20 hours to be competent enough to spot enemies in Arma 2 vanilla. Don't hesitate to use your 'head' to turn around ingame and scan for Moving Stuff before ordering your grunts to move.

Mp wise Arma 2 doesn't shine unless you are playing coop most specifically cti mode.

Win

OT: Yeah, I feel your pain, which is why I choose a sniper anytime I'm playing the Armory.

I heard they are working on the original OFP campaign in the Arma2 engine, it's called Cold War Rearmed. http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Cold_War_Rearmed

That would be great if you wanted to play through an amazing campaign. Because Arma 2's isn't. But i'm sure there's alot of good player made content though.
Wait... only Cold War Crisis? Meh.

I want a modernised version of Resistance.

I also would like to take the time to admire Bohemia Interactive for giving us titles that let us appreciate the tactical potential of the bicycle.

I'm not sure if they're doing Resistance also. You'd have to ask some questions over there. Or maybe one of these guys know.

I thought both were great campaigns.
I liked all 3 of the OFP campaigns (the real ones not the Codemasters stuff)... but I thought Resistance had the strongest campaign and way more opportunities for Tactical Bicycle Assault than any other game before or since.

One thing Bohemia's games do well is show just how confusing and chaotic combat can be... probably all that time they spend developing combat sims for military use. I think the most intense gaming experience I've ever had was a nighttime fire fight in the middle of forest without NVG after having scarpered from an unexpected armoured force in Resistance.

And my specs aren't high enough to run Arma2 with a good enough framerate either.
If it makes you feel any better, from the provisional specs they've released, no one has the specs to run ArmA III on max settings. :\

So i have to play the old Rainbow 6 games (Raven Shield and earlier), Ghost Recon 1 and Swat 4 to get some tactical shooting action in there.
At least you've got all the classic tactical combat sims covered.

SWAT 4 proved to me I'd never make a good cop... apparently firing a beanbag round into the face of a restrained prisoner is frowned on.

Virgo, you were a bit unlucky there and made several mistakes:

1. The Demo looks crap. All textures are just low level and very washed out. Maybe thats why you're not seeing anything. Plz buy the original version and see for yourself. Prices are very low since ArmA3 comes out Q1 / 2012.

2. This game needs to be setup. Fiddling around with the options until you get better results can take up to an hour. Getting rid of things like POST fx (bloom, Distance fx etc) makes the gfx sharper and lets you spot things easier. Also, switching off grass (landscape details to LOWEST) is a fav fps booster amongst ArmA fans. Hate to say it, but this maybe the wrong forum to ask these questions anyway.

3. Russians, US, landscape all green - yeah i can understand you, i hate this too. Its a personal thing, you're better off in Takistan (Arrowhead) hunting terrorists / rebels, believe me.

4. Armory missions do suck indeed. Nobody buys this game for SP, its all about MP COOP or Team vs Team. You're only playing SP while figuring out your custom controls and joystick.

5. If you're talking to yourself inside a vehicle it just means you're in the commander seat giving orders to your stupid crew. Dont worry you'll get used to it.

6. With the demo version you cant connect to most servers. This is your main problem. You need to buy the ArmA2 original and Arrowhead mission disk, install them / combine them into ArmA2: Combined Ops, patch everything and THEN connect to servers you find interesting.
Whats interesting? Ask for interesting MP missions on the official forums, lots of ppl can tell you which missions and mods to get to maximize your fun.

7. Socialise. In MP this game becomes a team sim. You stick together, you communicate, you fail or win as a team. You saved someone, and he healed you 20mins later, thats how it works. Get Teamspeak & Vent and ask which servers you can meet nice ppl on who show you how its done.

LOTS of folks love to train new guys. And in 3 months you do the same.

I must first clarify a few things:
1) The free version and demo are cut down versions of ArmA 2, the best parts of the game such as the editor and mod support aren't present.
2) The expansion, Operation Arrowhead, improves alot of the game, and the map works alot better especially for someone getting into the game.
3) To really get use to the game you need to play through the campaign, it eases you into the game, the free version does not have that tho.
4) Finally, you will have to accept that the game isn't forgiving, if you ease yourself in its not so bad, but jump in the deep end (aka most MP games) and you will have you ass cut off, cooked and handed to you on a platter.

As stated above, you need the campaigns to ease into it, and someone to help you would go along way. If you'd like I'd be willing to give you a hand/show you the ropes.

Both being professional militaryies, its natural that the USMC and russians both use effective camo for their environments, this is one reason (as you seem to have realised) I suggest OA as an option for starting off, easier to get your bearings. However even in A2, the campaign will help somewhat.

Yes the armoury missions do suck, honestly I havent touched them since the one time I went in to see what it was. The campaign is better tho, and MP with a good group (CTI especially, or Domination) is what truely makes the game shine.

the 2500 ping is actually incorrect, something to do with gamespy, you have to connect to a game to truely find out the ping. Unfortuenly your right about the community, there is a heavy elitist tendency (tho not everyone is), and finding help can be hard. As offered above, if you'd like I'd be happy to show you the ropes and do some co-op to help you learn how it works. I've been playing since OFP came out, and for all its frustrations (mostly community based), it's still the best game I compare every other to, and sofar no other FPS stands upto it (thats not to say I dont enjoy some BF3 run and gun :)), 10 years + with a version of the game on my HDD (OFP, ArmA, ArmA II/OA) but show the longevity and potential the game has. It's best described as a military sandbox/simulator. The sim is great and what hooks people in, but what truely keeps it fresh is the limitless possibilities with missions and mods others and yourself can create.

I mean, I enjoy how it plays, but I just can't find a good game here. What am I doing wrong or what's the game doing wrong?
