Assuming you're in the right state of mind when you start and don't over do it Alcohol can really help you unwind, especially after a stressful or boring day/week/month/whatever. Also, it tastes good... depending on your tastes... but there's a drink out there for everyone.

Still, it's long been my policy not to drink to get drunk but drink because you WANT to drink what you're drinking, that way it's more about fun and flavor and less about just getting trashed off your ass.

Seriously, people are such squares on this website when it comes to drinking - if you do it in a safe environment with a bunch of friends, it makes for one hell of a time.
The issue most people like that have isn't the drinking, but the attitude that you can only have a good time if you drink. If people are only capable of having a good time or being friendly because they ingested what is essentially a poison then there is something wrong with them.

Referring to those who don't drink as "squares" won't help anyone take your side either, as the concept of being "cool" as opposed to "square" is a ridiculously childish concept.
I'm not interested in anybody taking my side, thanks (considering how many people drink, I've already got plenty of support). And I don't know anybody who thinks that the only way to enjoy themselves is to get drunk - I personally feel sorry for people like that.

But seriously, people take the whole anti-alcohol thing way too far on this site. Nobody is forcing you to drink, so just relax.
You are very lucky indeed, pretty much everyone I work with and went to school with did and still do think that way.

To be honest people will take everything too far on this site: Alcohol, marijuana, religion, atheism, [Insert game/culture/belief here] hate.

My issue with it stems from knowing people who abuse it and cannot enjoy themselves without it, I have no issue with those who drink it because they genuinely enjoy it.

And it got me thinking what's with all the hype about alcohol? Granted I'm 18 and the only alcohol I've had was a Bud Light that an uncle gave me. But when I drank it, it tasted horrible and said "Why do people like this stuff?"
Of course it did. It's a Bud (tastes like thin water) AND a light beer. Light beer always taste like shit. Try some real beer next time ;)

OT: Some kinds of alcohol tastes good (beer and whisky in particular) and it gives you (as a lot of people have already said) at good feeling IF you don't drink too much.
There is no reason to get so drunk that you can't remember the evening or cannot control yourself.

Beer's are never nice the first time you drink them. In fact most beer is horrible anyway, this is true for anything made in the US from what experience has thought me.

I drink because I like the taste of it. I don't drink heavily or even that often. As mentioned people will drink a bucket load of it to enjoy themselves. Take a shy girl who doesnt like to be seen and give her a drink, she'll be out dancing in no time and enjoying herself.

Could we not have the self-righteous nonsense, please? It's fine if you don't drink, but don't condemn others because they do. You sound like one of those 'abstinence is cool' kids. I was gonna say more, but sonickoala pretty much covered everything.
This guy pretty much covers what I think. No I'm not saying drinking should be banned I'm just saying why do people think they need alcohol to have a good time?

I don't drink, but I can understand the appeal of being drunk. There are really 3 reasons why i don't drink, 1) I hate the taste of alchohol 2) I'm kind of happy all the time really, and i can have fun without "enhancements". And 3) because alchohol is a poison, it kill your braincells and your liver, and I don't hink I would like having a hangover (because of the poison). Especially when I can have just as fun without drinking and feeling like crap the next day. (and yes, i am allowed to drink, drinking age is 18 in Sweden : )
But I digress, that's why I don't drink.
I guess people start to drink because it's cool, and it's fun being drunk, you might work up the courage to tell a girl you like her with a little "encouragement", or just to feel and act like someone else for a few hours. Forgetting the crap at school or at home or at work. And then I think it becomes a habit, I mean why do people eat candy? they might not be alchoholics but it's easier and more comfortable to drink than to not do it. I have no idea why there is such a push, from everywhere to drink, but I guess it's cool and "everyone" else is doing it, and the companies want to sell their product.
That's what I think at least, how 'bout you?

It is hyped up because it is banned till a certain age in most countries. Nothing more, nothing less. Tell someone they can't have/do something and you know what, a great percentage of them would jump at the chance the moment it is offered! For many people the forbidden fruit makes it all the more desirable, cause then you an brag about it to your friends.

Personally I don't drink... it tastes like arse.

the big hype is more in american culture where the law bans you from drinking untill the unreasonable age of 21. I've been drinking since I was 16, so there isn't that sence of need alcohol to make a party or any preasure to drink after becomming legal like there is in the US. Although to put this in perspective I'm usually the first guy to sugjest bringing a beer or 2, I just don't get 'wasted'
Well, from my point of view, 21 is not a "unreasonable" age. Honestly, that should be incorporated in more of the western countries, since it would improve peoples health. The reason for a restriction age of 21 or 18, is that you count on that you have close friends that are ~2 years younger than yourself, and thus alcohol is quite easily accesible to those close friends. Of course, you can't force people not to drink, but it does help to not make the effects too bad.

Even though this is a gaming-related/focused site, things like these sometimes have to be discussed. some people need to hear these things from somewhere. Personally, I do not drink, and I am a member in the IOGT-NTO (or at least their swedish youth part UNF), so I'm quite engaged with these questions. But I must say I like there being quite a few people declaring they don't drink. Thunbs up!

(Apologies for the wall of text, but as previously stated, I'm quite into these things :p)

drinking since I was 13 (don't take me as an example though). It is true that alcohol helps to drop some inhibitions, but it is not needed to have fun.

21 is un reasonable since by law you are an adult by age 18.
By age 18 you can legally decide the fate of your country
By age 18 you can be sent off to war
By age 18 you can be drafted to fight for your country

Although despite this you cannot drink for 3 more years. The age limit is what causes the phenomenon of binge drinking which is unique to the united states. If you've always been brought up in life that *meh* alcohol is a drink like any other and as a kid you are allowed a glass of wine on occasion with your speghetti, there is no rush to finally become 21 and drink your face off.

Drinking isn't a big deal. It's only considered a big deal in the U.S. due to the drinking age being 21 (instead of 18, which is what it should be).

Some people like alcohol. I actually like the taste of beer, wine, and some hard liquors, but it's an acquired taste. Also, drinking is fun.

"Shots shots shots shots shots shots shots give the girls an excuse to suck my dick"

And I like some drinks and the feeling you get from them.
I also like the feeling during a good cigar or my favorite cigarette.

I haven't done either in months.

It's all about the company though. have some retards around you and alcohol stops being fun and becomes a chore. Probably why I haven't gone out in a while to do so.

There's a reason teh saying goes, "There's a special circle of hell for people who waste good scotch"

It's good stuff and a half glass of it on ice is a nice way to beverage a card game.

I drink because I genuinely like the taste and the experiences I have had while drinking are second to none. Have I drank to excess - yes, have I gone for long periods of time without a drop - yes, do I need it to have fun - no, do I drink it because it is fun - yes.

Surely the fact that we are all gamers and have fun playing games is proof that you don't need drink to have fun. I don't get drunk before I jump into an xbox live party(although it becomes an entire different experience when you do, Nazi Zombies at 5 am after being out drinking all night). The thing is while a large majority can stay sober on a night out, and still have fun, there will always be someone who thinks they cant have fun unless they are drinking which is a vicious cycle to fall into and it is happening to a few of my friends atm.

Like other's have said, it's just a fun, sociable thing to do. What I don't understand is why people drink for the sole purpose of getting shitfaced drunk. That being said, I've also never really experienced it. I think I may have a high tolerance to alcohol (My idea is it's because I'm half French), but no matter how much I've consumed, I've never been what others would call drunk, to the point where I would do things I don't remember and such. And I've only thrown up once, after drinking a large cup of brandy, two large cups of vodka, and then an additional chugged half bottle of vodka. And also smoked both weed and a black and mild. But the entire night was still completely clear in my mind.
