What's the big deal about Heavy Rain?

I played the game and loved it. Yes, it sucked that the killer never changed no matter what you did, but that should be a lesson learned for future games.

The thing is that they attempted to do something original in a AAA game, which is rarely, if ever, seen nowadays. And I respect them a LOT for that. It's got these little details that you just love, like a small sheet of paper that they teach you to fold into an origami figure while the game installs. Things like that make for an amazing game, and I for once have never regretted paying for it.

I don't remember ever pixel bitching in that game, actually. Nothing was small enough for me to NOT find it, but maybe I skipped a few things? Anyways, it's ridiculous to follow just one review (or four or five, but that's a different thread), just give a shot yourself and see how it tickles you.

I can honestly say that Heavy Rain managed to produce an excited anxiety over what was going on in the game that no other single player game has ever done. It was a game that actually allowed you to fail and then moved on from there (No reloads, no retries) and that made it an exhilirating ride.

Arguably, on the second time through you realize that many of the scenes have no direct impact on the story. But the first playthrough of Heavy Rain is simply breathtaking due to how involving it is. My girlfriend prohibited me from playing the game without her present, because the story was that involving and my sister finished the game in one sitting (9 hours) when she came to visit me.

Well, first off, Point and click games have never REALLY sucked imo, and the current generation of them is fantastic.

Heavy rain is probably most respected by people who want to see a return of great single player games, rather than ok, or terrible games that suffer for having a multiplayer, see Kane and Lynch. They are same people who buy games like darksiders or other games that are very linear, becasue they know the devs are all working together. Those games usually have no replay value, but are good core games. Heavy rain, has a TON of replay value, and it has a great story etc. to boot. Thats why people like it.

Personally I always wished little big planet had been the killer app... all the copies in our bargain bins at work make me sad.
Little Big Planet is the killer app. They're in the bargain bin in preparation for LBP2.
Or because of the GOTY edition.

It is an example of good storytelling (IMO): immersion is the key. Players will want to find out who the killer is. It keeps you in suspense, and frequently changes direction just when you thought you had it sussed out.

If you hadn't guessed already, I loved this game.

I'm hoping Heavy Rain comes out on the Xbox so I can play it. I'm not the biggest fan of point and click adventures, but there have been enough in my time that I've really enjoyed that i'd like to give this one a try.
well the IP is owned by Sony so you might want to borrow a friends ps3.

Ummm?

Heavy Rain isn't one of those games that people make a big deal out of like World of Warcraft or Call of Duty, so I don't see the point of this thread since it sounds like....you're complaining that the hype is getting to you? Something?

For what it was it was pretty good, not a failed attempt at making an entire game out of QTEs, but I wouldn't jump at the chance to play the next iteration...=/

Games like Heavy Rain do something different for a change, gives us a breather from all the shooters and action-adventures.
I thought this was a great game, even though parts of the script had holes (like Ethan having blackouts and waking up with origami in his hands), and some of the voiceacting was weird due to an awkward script at times. But remember, this was most likely written i French and then translated to English.

Storweee!

People love a good story. Most were kind of misled with the whole who done it angle (with it always being the same smegging guy), I think most people were expecting a cluedo-esk type game where the killer always changes depending on what you do in the game.

Which kind of doesn't make sense if you think about it, just' cos you don't win a fight with some guy the killer becomes somebody else, even though the crime has already been committed.

Simple, No-one thought it would work, and it did. One Review that points out bad things like that doesn't stand. I know people that never had to do any "Pixel Bitching." Now stop luring the fanboys. I can see a few already.

Calumon: This thread needs less arguments and more love.

This thread is just going to become Heavy Rain fanboy central, and I am one of those fanboys. The game was DIFFERENT from all the FPS shit out there.

I haven't played it.

What annoys me is that pompous prick David Cage banging on about how shit stories are in games, yet I've seen enough articles about the plot-holes in Heavy Rain to sink a ship.
There's a shit story and there are plot holes mate. I don't mind a few plot holes as I don't usually delve that much into it (I enjoy the story, just don't analyze every bit of it to death), but a bad story is much worse imo, see Bad Company 2 for example.

Now, don't get me wrong, not defending the guy nor the game specifically, I'm a PC gamer only so haven't played it, but just chiming in for 2 cents ^^

@OP: Oh and if you don't like adventure games, that's your problem... they've got their audience, the fact they don't appeal to you doesn't mean they suck. Frankly I loved some of the old adventure games and haven't gotten my hands on one for ages (last were Syberia 1&2, good times), would love to give Heavy Rain a go, but alas, no PC version :<
