Keyboard and mouse are better than controllers IMO.
The steam sales.
Also mods :3

Replaceable hardware leads to PC games pushing the boundaries of the technical quality of games (bigger/more filled worlds, better graphics etc.). Many people also feel a keyboard and a mouse are vastly superior to the console controllers, especially as it doesn't require a lot of games to use things such as auto-aim or time slowing mechanics to compensate for the inability of controllers. There's also the fact that a computer can run more than just games, leading to a lot of comfort when playing due to availability of other things the PC has. When in multiplayer games, text communication is infinitely easier and actually viable, even in relatively fast paced games.

Just the stuff off the top of my head.

- Genres that are more or less exclusive to PC: Strategy, flight sim, racing sim (GT5 is not a sim), actually... pretty much all sims (including realistic shooters), MMOs
- Genres that are better on PC: First person shooter, RPG, non-action Adventure
- Better graphics
- Scalable hardware. Anything from $400 budget gaming to $4000 6-monitor 7.1 surround sound gaming
- Peripherals
- Backwards compatibility
- Affordable games
- Community developed mods and maps
- Better community in the first place
- Indie games (consoles are catching up here, but I'm not sure if you call a game "indie" if it's published by Sony or Microsoft)

Sorry, I just have to pull you out on this one, it's just a big thing with the actual argument between console and PC.

How much on average do you spend a year keeping your PC capable of playing new releases and how much did you spend on the PC and components to begin with?

This isn't an attack, just research. I'm actually interested in the real reasons why people buy console or PC and why the PC is edging behind the scenes of the mainstream market.

However, consoles have better flight sims and ace combat.
You are kidding right? The stuff on consoles do not qualify as sims....

Ok, WTH is with all the "graphics are better" crap? Ultimately, does that REALLY improve a game? I'm a PS3 girl, but I like PC games just as well...

I just see no point in arguing over graphics unless the font the developers used is absolute shit (but then it's the game designers' fault, not the system) because plenty of great games with rather crappy graphics (coughxMINECRAFTxcough) have been made and loved by lots of people.

So should that REALLY be a point in favor of a system? Which one is ultimately shinier than the other?
Since it is one of the main selling points of each new console gen, especially this generation with HD gaming being at the top of the feature list, this is not an unfair thing to list as an advantage.

Does it improve game play. Yes and no. On it's own it does not make a game good. But being able to see a road in a racer further in the distance is good. Being able to see things you are shooting at better. Having objects that look properly round due to tessellation, instead of hexagon shaped. Well I will happily pay more for these added benefits.

And I know the next gen of consoles will be selling themselves on graphics tech like tessellation that the PC has had for a long time before.

Well.. my 2 cents.

If we take out the exclusivity of games (and this is a HUGE IF, i know..) you can play any console game in a PC (even wiggle games at this point), the opposite is not possible (considering MMOs and RTS mostly).

How are you even posting in this forum? And by this question i mean that you will use a PC eventually for a series of other tasks, and with the extra investment you would otherwise use on a console, you can have a really decent gaming rig. (I know you can use the console for posting in a forum and other online activities, but the PC is much easier to use and has more possibilities)

The library of games is bigger, and the prices lower. And a lot of legal free good games.

Mods, mouse and keyboard, back catalogue, Real Time-, Turn Based- and Grand Strategy, RPG's, Football Manager, (in some cases) Spotify, that I can decide to play a game and just click the icon rather than start up a whole new machine. There is only one genre of games I prefer on console and that is racing, which I never play.

-Dawn of War- that is all.

Naah. Love the game but I hate PCs.
But suggesting the PC is a big deal will get all the PC gamers here all moist and excited all over again. ..and we dont want that.
A PC just happens to have alot of expensive crap that makes it able to run games.
But a console is specifically designed to run games.
No big deal here buddy. =)

Nobody heard of the word "both"? Just me?

Most households will have a PC nowadays even if not solely for gaming. You don't need a mega gaming rig to play PC games, and you don't need an awesome TV for console games, so why are you arguing one OR the other? I regularly play PC, PS2 and Gamecube - I never feel I have to choose between them, so I get the best of both worlds.

Pros:
- Better Moddability
- Can use any control scheme
- M/K better for some genres (RTS, FPS and some RPGs)
- PC Exclusives
- Better graphics
- Gives access to all your non-gaming stuff without needing an additional platform

Cons:
- Initially very expensive
- Expensive maintenance
- Some games can be unpredictable and need fiddling with before they run
- Generally not that accessible and needs a reasonable amount of tech knowledge
- M/K aren't so good for a lot of genre's

They have their pros and cons just like consoles do. Personally I prefer the convenience of consoles and the exclusives, but I would like a PC someday for the moddability.

PC's biggest disadvantage is that it's much harder to make a AAA title on it rather than on a console, I know it sounds strange but I know this for a fact (so please don't start a stupid flame war, people) and thus you get less exclusive AAA titles and usually more buggy. I've been a PC gamer for a long time, but when I switched to the consoles, I didn't look back. Still agree on the graphics being better on PC tough.
Seriously, read the bolded part again and then research PS3 game development.
Half an hour of google will show the result.
And its not the difficulty to code, nay, its the publisher.
Coding is just a lame excuse because you have got more language to code on in a PC than a PS3 or XBOX 360

Backwards compatability, modding, community, back catalogue, choice, emulation, multi-tasking, music, portability, notes, common terms and not being treated like money cattle.

You should bold the FACT word in the comment. It's not just coding, I've worked on PC, XBOX360, PS3 and DS titles. The PC was by far the most annoying one to work with. The coding was not the problem, the rest of the development process was. You talk in terms of search google, I talk in terms of personal experience.

So far....about 75 bucks. That was on ram, I was running with two gigs and decided to get two more gigs while I still could. The rig I have now I've had for two years now and I haven't had to replace a single part of it.

and how much did you spend on the PC and components to begin with?
250-300. I bought second-hand parts for the most part(My monitor is literally a dumpster rescue, which saved about 500 bucks), so I was able to get a rig capable of running any game I want to at 1600x1200 for about the price of a new console.
See the thing is, a lot of people will pay so much more for a good gaming rig. When I was deciding on parts for a computer, the total price came up to about £800. A lot of that was because of the peripherals like the monitor, desk and chair though. I never managed to get to having anywhere near enough money to getting it, which is why I've stuck to console.

Mainly that I can't stand controllers, that it is easily portable (laptop) and that I can do my other things on the same device.

Another very important feature is the modding community. Is there something you don't like about a game? Have a look around online and chances are that someone has made a mod to fix it, or that you can find enough information to fix it yourself.
