What's the consensus on gaming cliffhangers?

I'm not a fan. I don't mind a teaser or something that gives them a hook to continue the story, but actual cliffhangers only work well if the sequel is coming out in a year or less.

I think Half Life 2 and its Episodes are a good example of this. Each one concludes the story, but still sets up the next chapter. Episode 2 could have easily ended on a a cliffhanger, but it took the story that last necessary step to wrap things up - but it still had set up the next chapter.

Depends. When the game still seems complete, I'm cool with them. Individual chapters of a game should be, in and of themselves, whole. If they meet that criteria, I'm good with it. If not, it's usually lame.
