Just incase you don't know what Dark Side of The Moon is I'll tell you. It's a concept album by Pink Floyd and is supposed to be the greatest album of all time, but frankly I think that The Who's Quadrophenia is the best album of all time.
What I want to know is which album from your favourite genre is the best one in the genre.

Well my favourite genre is Alternative Rock and I think the best album is Doolittle by The Pixies.

What is the best album from your favourite genre?

Edit: Looks like I'll have to listen too In The Court of The Crimson King if it's as awesome as people say.

Well...my favorite music is Christian...possibly The Beautiful Letdown by Switchfoot, for the pure fact that I've actually heard songs from that album on radio stations that aren't Christian music stations, and on a car commercial once.

I would argue that Dark Side of the Moon isn't the best representation of the prog genre, but if you meant the most famous then fair enough. I'd rather it be that than just about any other Pink Floyd album.
The media reckons it's the greatest but personally I don't have much love for the Floyd.
At least one person replied I thought this thread was going to die.

Sorry, but Pink floyd transcends its own genre, it transcends generations as their works are truly works of art.

To compare it to Quadrophenia as if it was on the same plane is insulting to what Quadrophenia was compared to DSoTM. Seriously very few professional organizations rank it even within the top 20 much less the greatest album of all time. You might be able to make the case for the best concept album but even that falls flat. Quad was certainly a good album for its time, but honestly it does not even remotely hold up to the scrutiny of time. Even today Id put it on par with Green Days American Idiot, concept album, right place, right time. Honestly, not even on the same field as Floyd.

Although honestly DSoTM is weak on concept compared to what is truly their masterpiece, The Wall, now THAT is truly the greatest concept album of all time, so much so that the concept could not be contained by the album and it had to be adapted to film.

While it might not be my #1 favourite album in the genre, I'd imagine Morbid Angel's 'Covenant' fitting the bill. It's one of (if not the) best selling death metal albums (over 120,000 units sold in the US alone) and it is exceptionally well received, so I guess that would pass as a 'Dark Side of the Moon' of the genre. Cannibal Corpse's 'Tomb of the Mutilated' and Obituary's 'Cause of Death' are also contenders, I suppose.

Um Mathcore/Progressive Metal- Colors by Between the Buried and Me.

It is it's own genre, and the album that I want all other albums to be. I will forever search for more albums that sound like that.

I don't listen to Christian music. However a little fun fact Black Francis of The Pixies is a Christian music junkie, so alot of Pixies songs have references to the bible.

Album threads are, sadly, swept under the rug 'round here. Yeah, other than DSotM I don't care much for Pink Floyd either. And even then DSotM is only just "decent". But you know, it sould a bundle and I've observed that albums with statistics attached to it are deemed as more "memorable" in the eyes of the public. Have you heard Thriller? It's really not that good. Off the Wall was much better.
Never heard it I always found MJ a bit creepy.

The best thrash album is Master of Puppets. There are thrash albums I like better out of personal taste, but objectively, Master of Puppets is the pinnacle of thrash metal; that album is untouchable.
What about Reign In Blood? Lars himself said it was a better album. Also I prefer Ride the Lightning to Master of Puppets but that seems to be just my opinion.

OT: Heavy Metal as a whole? Probably the Number of the Beast. Iron Maiden possibly the most iconic metal band and this album is insanely popular. I prefer their first but as you may have noticed I tend to be different. Or difficult. Or hard to please.

Dubstep has to be Fallen Light by Phaeleh... my favourite album of the Genre! I recently wrote a review for it on Amazon likening it to Smores!

In the Psytrance section it has to be Nothing Lasts, but Nothing is Lost, by Shpongle.... One of the few albums that HAS to be listened to as an album, not individual tracks!

Best Electronic: Nero, Welcome Reality... just pure epic!

Best pop: Tatu, 200km/h in the Wrong Lane... seriously, a good album!

Hmmm, I'm definitely not qualified to say so, but I'd say "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" by Blind Guardian is the best. The real one is probably something by Helloween

Let me be the first to bring up rap/hip hop. Enter the Wu Tang: 36 Chambers by the Wu Tang Clan (a.k.a The RZA, the GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon "The Chef", U-God, Ghostface Killah, and the M.E.T.H.O.D Man)
