Well my advice is the same as Bob Marley's: Don't Worry, Be Happy.

I think it was written by Bobby Mcferrin ;)
Well regardless, that's my advice on the whole deal =]

I thrive on negativity. It makes me happy.

You forgot about other topics

"Your first game"
"Why Halo is overrated"
"Why Halo Sucks"
"Is Halo overrated?"
"Your first game system"
"Your first console"
"Is Halo overrated?"
"When is it okay to call Halo overrated?"

I've seen these things often and I'm sure I haven't been here as long as some people. I do agree with the "you can ignore it" thing but I do think some threads happen too much.

You are correct.
I hate to be "that guy," but even though I've only been here a short time, I have noticed a steady decrease in quality ever since I got here.

Quite similar here. I can't really talk, because like yourself, I haven't been here all that long, but things do seem to be going on the train to ground level. Before, it was about 1 troll per 1000 members. It's probably tripled since then.
8 and 7 months respectively.
Not exactly what I would define as brief.

Also, there are 65,000 registered accounts. By your numbers, there have been at most 135 trolls in the history of the Escapist. I must respectfully disagree with that estimation as I feel it is far too conservative.

To address a few points raised:

1. I never said that there was a quality DECREASE in terms of thread topics. I've been here a couple of years now and to my memory it's always been like this. Even if I'm wrong it doesn't matter. The point is, it's like this now.

2. I also agree that "list" and "vs" threads should just be locked on sight. Often they are. But that's not really what my post was about as those type of threads aren't inherently negative.

3. I don't see a problem with discussing Halo, after all it IS a gaming forum and once again Halo isn't inherently negative in and of itself (unless you're unfortunate enough to be playing Halo on XBox Live in which case yes you are probably having a negative experience).

4. That star wars/JC picture is great, totally made my day.

5. I'm yet to hear any really profound, intelligent stuff come out of Phil Anselmo's mouth either onstage or off, and I've been a Pantera fan for as long as they've been releasing albums in my country.

6. Posting cheesy feel-good threads could potentially become just as annoying as the current situation. I don't want "cheesy feel-good", I prefer "interesting and unique".

Thanks to those who weighed in so far.

People are being negative, they're being bitchy. And eveyone likes to be bitchy from time to time, I can dig it. I just don't like when they're being blatently obvious that they're trying to stir up a riot. But nobody makes you click on these threads.

really, people on here are generally well behaved. If someone comes here and asks for help, people will usually be happy to share their opinions. And even if you say something out right stupid, people wont be as obnoxious as you would expect a large group of geeks on the internet to be. We're all here to have a good time.

Because the world right now is just too peachy. There's too many flowers, leprechauns, rainbows and unicorns prancing around, hand in hand, tossing gumdrops to all the little children. Everything is right with the world and nobody gives anyone so much as a bad thought or an annoyed look. Due to all this positivity, the general level of negativity on the internet is on the rise, as people need to rail, rage and vent to release all those bad vibes somewhere, lest they start vomiting up black blood.

Meh. These forums ain't great. They seem to be gradually degenerating in quality anyway, so you might as well just enjoy the downhill ride.
You are correct.
I hate to be "that guy," but even though I've only been here a short time, I have noticed a steady decrease in quality ever since I got here.
its not the decrease in quality, its your palate becoming more accustomed to such a sour taste, I've been here as long as you and the quality has stayed fairly constant from when I was lurking.

The only thing that changes is the users, not the content, the content always stays the same... merely our own ability to stomach such stupidity because at first you are part of the "newbies", and then you become a "veteran" of the forum... as such you feel the need to shout about "how it was better in the old days" (even though the old days are like 4 months ago)
You become more of an elitist with each passing day, striving for a better forum, but only sounding like an elitist prick each time you utter the same phrase that has been uttered forever on forums "it was better back in the day"

It'll happen to whatever forum you visit, what about World of WarHammer thing people play?, the level 80 shamans all bang the same drum, "stupid newbies are ruining it for us".

Same shit, different bucket my friend.

anyway on topic;
super happy thread!

three cheers for this guy!

OT i tend to find the pessimistic threads tend to be more amusing and original than the "Mega cheery funtime" malarky
Why thank you, I like getting cheers, and hookers. Payment in installments will be fine.

Sorry can I add to my statement?.
Re; the content staying the same but the users changing, I'd like to add that with the huge influx of users your bound to get more bile, the bile was there before but it increases, but with the bile comes good stuff, such as users like Baby_Tea, Root of all Evil, SCAM and hazyshadow

We take the good with the bad, its a lot of good, its a lot of bad, but they come hand in hand.
