Whats the deal with the Avatar movie?

A few spoilers. You have been warned.

1)It's called avatar because they are controlling Avatars of Na'Vi bodies. They even openly call the bodies "Avatars"

2)Indeed. The characters were extremely sterotypical. They really overplaced the greed in the humans.

3)Yes.

4)He was sent to research them. They didn't know Jake was looking for weaknesses

5)Never watch Alien so it doesn't matter to me.

6)He got to walk around all day in a Avatar with full working legs. Who doesn't want to be 5 feet taller and have Legs?

7) I think James Cameron is releasing Sequels.

8) That...that's an extremely good point. What I want to know is why they even bothered meeting the army. They just wanted the metal deposit under the tree, they destroyed the tree and drove the Na'vi away. Why bother fighting them over defending your new mine?

1)You know how that thing under your name is called an 'avatar'? It's just a different way to view yourself. It's called 'Avatar' because they're put inside of 'Avatars' in the shape of the Navi.

2)Yea, the movie's predictable.

3)You're never the only one.

4)Because they wanted to go through the motions and get rid of the Navi peacefully so they wouldn't have to waste their ammo. It's always easier to do things the easy way.

Yea, it's a predictable movie with a bad, already-done-before story, but that's not the point. The entire movie is the CGI and the planet, nothing else. You don't watch it for the story, but for the kitties.

That said, I don't care much for the movie. It was Ok, but nothing special.

That pretty much says it all right there. I watched it twice and loved it both times. I was really taken with the visuals and the experience as a whole. But the movie wasn't real deep. I'm pretty sure I saw a "No Diving" sign outside the theater on my way in. But not being thoughtfully provacotive actually worked in its favor, not distracting you so you could take it all in. If you'd rather, think of it less as a movie and more of a multibillion dollar cinematic stress test for the film industry.

Point for point though, this movie is pretty much the foil for District 9. Watch Avatar, then go watch District 9, and you should be completely satisfied.

I'm among those rare few it seems who don't expect every movie to be some sort of amazing insight into the nature of reality and out place within in. When I go to the theaters, I go to have fun, and bloody hell was Avatar a blast to watch! Dragged down a bit in the first half, but once the fighting kicks in strap-in because you're in for one helluva ride.

But apparently that's not enough. Ah well! I for one enjoyed the movie.

I pretty much agree with most of your points, except that I would think that offering a paraplegic the ability to walk again would be a pretty good way of getting them to do something.

Like you, it's not that I didn't like the movie and it's certainly not that it was 'bad', it was just...well, generic. There is nothing at all new or interesting put forth in this movie, which is a shame because back in his heyday, Jim Cameron was the grandpappy of new and interesting. The ONLY exceptional feature of the film was the visuals, and only a bald-faced liar could call the visuals anything less than stunning.

Other than the graphics, there is nothing that good here. Nothing that bad, but still nothing that good. It's Disney's "Pochahontas" with 10 foot tall blue cats.

My biggest gripe is that it's become the unofficial "best movie evarr!" of last year, and it's NOWHERE near the best film of the year. There is no reason that this should have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars either (The Hurt Locker bored me to tears and I spotted many glaring inaccuracies, but it was still better than this).

I will address each of your complaints directly.

1. It is called Avatar because that is what the half human navi things are called, though Humans vs. the Thundercats would work well, as well as Fergully 2.0.

2. You are using smarty brain to think to hardly. No use smarty brain! Look at the 30 million dollar glowing fern! LOOK AT IT!

3. Umm... kind of, If it was not for the whole giant glowing arrow above his head that says, "I AM THE BAD GUY, GRRR."

4. Their is an explonation for all that, and it is...

5. Since when has she been considered a bad@$$? It's not like there is an entire series of films all about her being awesome, and one had been directed by James Cameran and they turned her to a tree hugging wimp... oh wait.

6. Actually, that new tall Thundercat body had legs as well. Though I imagine he had to abandoned everything he ever loved for a blue girl and a very freaky pony tail.

7. ...Very good point. I never understood why they didn't threaten orbital bombardment from the beginning. It would be much cheaper then the research to create an alien-human hybrid, the pay checks for all the marines, the mech suits, and everything else that they put on that planet. Indeed, you don't even need to pay for a nuke, just a big hunk of steel would cause an atomic level damage if shot from the planet's orbit.

Why? You said so yourself that Hurt Locker bored you to tears, so why is it better? Is not the purpose of movies to both inform and more importantly entertain?

I just... don't understand...

I mean I'd rather watch Avatar again than be forced to watch Pocahontas, or Dancing with Wolves, or Fern Gully and the other seemingly bajillions of movies with comparable plots. It's certainly more entertaining to watch than any of them, that's for sure.

Gah! I'll just chalk this up to me not being sophisticated enough or something.

I liked the movie mainly because of the 3D. The story just wasn't there to you know, tell a story, it was just there as a bland tortilla shell for the CGI to be delivered into your focal orifice.

Yes that is a good reason for things being popular but also some really bad things are popular too. Like Twilight Fable (in my option)and the Wii.
To HigherTomorrow; I'd just like to point out how popular a view point like that is so if you really want to go down that path I'd get a different view. Just saying if you want to stay away from "popular" things.
To the OP; I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm not in a big rush to see it ether. I'd more love to see District 9 or Inglorious Basters again. With movies if I think I might like it I'll see it and there's not much I think I'll like.

Avatar is a physical manifestation of, well, usually a god or some kind of outsider, because gods don't exactly fit in.

So, uh, it's a VERY fitting name for the movie.

And saying that the story is bad and predictable is like saying that Star Wars is bad (and in my opinion, it is rather over-rated) because it's obvious that the dudes in menacing uniforms are evil and that's stated like 1 minute into the first movie.

Never saw it, and all I heard was how good it was. To be honest, I didn't believe that. Just because everyone loves it, doesn't necessarily mean its the greatest thing ever. Probably the only person to agree with me is my English teacher, she even said it was average. My best friend said it was the greatest movie he has ever seen, but then again, he really doesn't watch many movies. If I were to see it, it would be only once, JUST to see what everyone else liked in it, and then be done. Most likely, I'll see nothing special.

lol, I get what you're saying, but the thing is my brain isn't really detachable. And i reckon the day it gets switching off is the day I die. I know the movie was supposed to be a CGI paradise, but once upon a time (and far far away) so was Shrek. But Shrek had a great story-line. Directors need to understand that pretty colors are good but they're not everything

Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more there. And Shrek seems like aeons ago for some reason. Maybe because it was original back then and not a huge mass of fart jokes like the last couple =/

I think its because the plot, and story telling just had the subtlety of a hammer to the face that it gets so much flak.
