This is obviously a matter of opinion. My own personal nominations would be Origin. Not simply because they made the Ultima series which by made a HUGE contribution to the entire RPG genre, but because of the minds who worked for Origin and later moved on to make amazing games in other studios.

Origin's (what a fitting name for a company) minds later went on to make Looking Glass, Ion Storm, id and Digital Anvil (Freelancer). It's pretty amazing to see what brilliant people worked together in one company (Richard Garriot, John Romero, Warren Spector, Chris Roberts).

What is in your opinion the greatest company to have been in business?
Maybe Blizzard? or Bioware?

Please describe why you think they're the best? Not only the games they made, but also the contribution the company had for the whole industry.

EDIT:

after a suggestion from @ten.to.ten, I'll modify the question:

What are the greatest developers for each era, separated into PC and console gaming. Maybe that's easier to narrow down. So for example, my take would be Origin for the late 80's, early 90's for PC gaming. Nowadays, it'd be Blizzard in PC gaming. For consoles I think Nintendo really deserves the title for the entire 90's in console gaming, though I'm not a fan myself. I just respect their contribution and achievements.

It is a tie between Bioware, Blizzard, and Gamefreak.
Bioware for making a godsent Starwars game, Blizzard for making the best RTS ever created, and Gamefreak for creating one of the deepest competitive RPG's to ever hit the market.

My vote would be on Blizzard. I can't say I got total knowledge on all game companies, but I am familiar with most of Blizzards games. They take their time with the games to make them good and they've pretty much all been a huge success.
WoW has gotten slightly worse after each expansion but they're not exactly losing money over it.

...Gief Diablo III.

I've gotta say Valve, just because...well, look at the impact they've had. They're excellent for the indie market and gave it a new way to operate, they revolutionized the story element in FPS games...well they raised the bar at least, and they know what projects deserve their backing and assimilation (see: Portal). All that, and they still find the time to support their products. Bravo.

That doesn't mean they're the be-all, end-all of great games, but it is my opinion that they've had the greatest impact on the business.

I'ma throw a shout-out to Rare though. The old Rare...you will be missed. As will Bullfrog, a developer that loved to build quirky, creative games that were addictive and light-hearted, despite typically mature themes. They may not have impacted the industry, but they did their jobs well.

To OP: Seriously, good call on Origins, if only for the fact their tagline of 'We Create Worlds' was absolutely damn true and is something I find a bit of a lost art in today's gaming (though not completely to be truthful).

My pick? Well, originally I was going to say Black Isle Studios for their contribution of amazing RPGs (also being continued by Obsidian and the, though sadly gone *sniff*, Troika Games), but you've definitely reminded me of a childhood spent playing games by Origins.

Gotta go play me some Wing Commander now.

Atlus. They have developed/published some of my favorite games of all time: Persona 3, 4, and Odin Sphere. They also have a solid library of other games.

Although at the moment their nowhere near as good as they were. I'd have to say Nintendo for the sheer number of great consoles and games they've developed or been responsible for.

Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Smash Bros, Pokemon, Advance Wars, the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and the DS and more

Call me a fanboy, but Nintendo. Saving the industry, a good amount of genres ("created" at least one, the Metroidvania), a huge library of franchises, and several innovations, like the ajustable 3D camera and the targetting system (used by 3D action games everywhere now days, evne if it is behind the scenes) and a couple others, I doubt anyone has an influence and library as tehy do.

Edit: Ninja'd

Nostalgia tells me the answer is Ocean who gave us the 80's and 90's classics on the C64, Speccy and Amiga etc. I know that the real answer is probably someone more modern, but I don't know who. I know that it isn't Nintendo if that helps.

Blizzard. Every game they make is good, even the monstrosity of wow.

I'd have said Bioware, but they really dropped the ball on dragon age

Valve, Bioware, Blizzard, probably. We'll see if they keep it up or if another company dethrones them.

Of devs no longer around: Bullfrog and Black Isle.
Of devs still around: Bioware, Bethesda and Rockstar.

I base these choices simply on how many of each devs' games I have had/still have.
