I've noticed that too. Whenever there's a joke race of tiny people, they're always tanks for the lolsorandom or something would benefit from a small hitbox like a rogue.bliebblob said:You know what? As far as I'm concerned, rogues in general are a cliche by this point and OP's choice thus largely irrelevant. :/
Don't take that as a slight mind you. I feel the same about all the usual classes. The best you can hope for is a rare class/race combo. Though if my MMO experience is anything to go by even that only goes so far as it is those exact combos that become curiously popular after all because "Lolsorandom!" I'd swear there's more gnome warriors in world of warcraft than orc ones, for instance. -.-
So if you want my opinion: play what you want to play and ask forgiveness rather than permission. And by asking forgiveness I mean subverting the usual tropes in other ways, or even just roleplaying the cliche well.
After asking around I found that the stereotypes are from min/max rulesets from D&D which means that the cliches are that Drow are Rangers and Half-Elves are bards. Either choice for trickster rogue would be each stereotypes' edgelord cousins. Also, it's a moot point due to the halfling stereotype, so any non-halfling is considered "fresh". So with that in mind, I did whatever because you're right, rogues have been cliche since AD&D.
In the end, I took your advice. I chose a Drow but will try to subvert the "dark elf assassin" stereotype via reconstruction instead of deconstruction. I'm just tired of seeing Drizzt-likes who claim to not be the token good one, but I'm also tired of seeing people think that evil means mixing the Joker with Palpatine. I just gotta pick the right tropes.
