Story, plot, and character development. I hate games that put so much money in graphics and game play that they don't even care what the protagonist is doing. They only care about his next ultimate move that lasts two minutes and does the same amount of damage as a regular attack (this is going by RPG gaming). In my opinion, I would rather go back and play a good 8-bit or 16-bit game for the Super Nintendo that has a great story that makes me interested in what's happening and care for the people, rather then play a Playstation 3 game that looks 'pretty'.

Simple answer. If it's fun or not. Why spend 50 bucks on a fantastic story and character development. I can get that in a book for MUCH cheaper.

Plot and Story
Every game has to give the player a good reason to kill a million billion space aliens or save the helpless princess otherwise the player will say "F*@k the princess let the whore die!" thus defeating the whole purpose of playing the game in the first place

What if beating up aliens is its own reward?

I've always been kind of an escapist (so I guess I'm in the right place), so I have this simple test I use to decide whether a game is generally good or not. It goes like this: if I can almost forget that I'm playing a game, then it's good. For example, Ico is good because, when those shadowy guys grab Yorda, instead of thinking to myself, "oh crap, I'm about to have to start over," I think "oh crap, I've got to save her!"

Story. If a game doesn't have a compelling enough storyline, I get extremely uninterested very quickly.

It depends on the type of game.

Old Shooty Fun(the only kind of shooter I care about) games need interesting weapons, good looking enemies, large open levels that look great and fast paced combat.

Depending on the game genre. I prefer games with Story and plot with good character development. But the gameplay mechanics have to be solid, that's the real number one thing, gameplay mechanics...it just has to work.

I know alot of people are saying Gameplay, but honestly Gameplay doesn't really mean much without Story.

Lots of things. Story, graphics, plot, character development, dialog/voice acting, immersive game play, fluid controls.

It's a sum of all parts thing rather than a single element.

Also replay value! If you buy a game and it has no replay value at all and gives no more on second and subsequent playthroughs it kind of takes the shine off for me just a little!

Turn based gameplay. Everything else is just noise and shinies to distract the children. I also demand sentences started with capital letters from my games.

a game needs compelling and developing characters (and i dont mean their breasts) that go along with the (an) established plot that flows very well with the gameplay. if any of those pieces are missing you lack a full game. the graphics also need to seam with the gameplay, or else playing the game will feel very stiff
