When I was a young man, I did a lot of RPGing. Mostly the Palladium TMNT RPG and its Post-Apocalyptic supplements, as well as their Horror game Beyond the Supernatural. House rules of course because Palladium is a munchkin paradise. We also played a lot of Paranoia and Toon for lighthearted games. I loved MERPS (Middle Earth Role Playing System) I don't hear much about that these days but it had these really complicated critical hit tables that meant you were as likely to cut your own leg off as hit your target, which of course I loved. I played a little Shadowrun but the guy with the books moved away. I remember totally re-hauling The Doctor Who Role Playing Game by FASA with mates because of the canon innacuracies, that book got a real workout. I don't know if many of those are "indie" but some of the books were printed pretty cheaply.

EDIT: Oh and Twilight 2000 set in the post nuclear Soviet Union. I remember playing about six different characters and having a lot of fun.
