Fallout 3, I am on my way to Megaton to sell of hats and the likes, when I happen upon a wastelander ghoul-woman. She was being attacked by the enclave, four of them. So I shot, figure I could help her.

Then I realize: I have just two bullets in my hunting rifle. So, after a quick headshot and one near miss, one of them (the enclave) falls down, I was about to make my heroic escape, but I heard the woman run towards me, screaming "Waaaaah!" So I turn around, pull out my lead pipe and distract the enclave, that are coming upon me with laser rifles mind you.

I won, thanks to dumb luck, and a lot of jumping.

In the end I had to crawl without no legs and only one arm through half the wasteland, spending hours and being almost entirely dehydrated(Mods), but atleast I saved the woman.

Hats didn't cower the medical bills though. Hmph!

Hope that is what you meant. =)

Saving all of the little sisters in Bioshock 1 & 2, and not just because I got stuff for it. I especially enjoyed the way I got to lay down some vengeful fiery beat downs while also opening a party sized can of whup ass on the splicers.

A few years ago there was a budding alliance in EVE Online who was ready to move into null sec and start off there little capital production business. They had just rented space from a friendly alliance and as one of the higher ups I was privy to the knowledge that we were going to betray them. This is rather normal for eve online. They new alliance wanted to make it big and was paying off a very large alliance for a small unoccupied space. They would just rent it for as long as they could pay or were allowed there. Unfortunately for these folks they were novices and choose the wrong alliance to trust. Once I heard that I got on my capital pilot and made sure my Revelation was up to snuff. Then I considered what was going to happen to them. They had just payed off a massive conglomerate billions and were about to move in a massive amount of capital blueprints and other things. They would bring tens of billions worth of items and they were about to lose it all. I felt a bit of pity for them but I did nothing. A few days before the big move I decided to act and tell them what was going on. The CEO didn't believe me until i showed him screenshots and recordings of the chats only the highest were privy to. After some rather overwhelming evidence he decided his alliance was going to pull back. Although they had already lost the billions in pay off they made it out with everything they needed to start off anywhere else. All I got was a simple thank you before the convo was ended.

Edit,

It may not sound like much but believe me when you lost a few MILLION in eve online you can feel it deep down. It takes so long to even meet even in eve online. CCP the games mods and admins owners have made study showing that most people can't even break past 1 billion. If you feel bad after losing a simple pvp and being t-bagged in another game think of how it feels like to lose months, even years of hard work to a simple mistake. I saved them from that.

Helped Wayne Haas get a job in Deus Ex Human Revolution.
Those of you who've played it know what I mean and why I say this. Don't spoil it for anyone, kay?

In Dragon Age 2, near the very end---
My grand act of reality defying mercy was: to not KILL THE FECK out of that whining sociopath Anders...
That's some hardcore mercy right there.

That or finishing off the ill-fated citizens of Nipton, CA, who were left out to dry by the legion.
That was going to be mine, um, I've done a lot of good things in playthroughs, so not many stand out. Seems the terrible things stand out far more...

When I was crossing the fallout 3 wasteland destroying all in my path I took a short break from the murder to help my former vault dewellers. They were the only ones who did not suffer at my hands...

In FarCry 2, I used up all of my health syringes to "ease the passing" of one of your rescue-ready buddies. Apparently even though I got to her within seconds and applied five of them, she couldn't be saved. I reloaded and tried to do it again without her getting hurt, and though I managed to kill everyone in the area, she would suddenly fall down of her own volition and die no matter what I did to her.

Apparently she was meant to die there, though that didn't stop me using up all of my health syringes.

Other than that, I can't really think of many other selfless moments. Every action in every game is rewarded somehow. :D
I remember when my favorite buddy died, I did all I could to save her but alas, it was not possible. After she died, I took her pistol as a memento of her friendship and cremated her with my molotovs. It was a sad time :(
It must have been a sad moment. I feel your pain, and am sorry for your loss. :(

Heheh. :p Great way to commemorate it, though. I'll remember that next time they die when nothing happens to them.

I go out of my way to NOT kill civilians when I play Prototype.

As you can imagine, the tank missions are really, really slow.

The most merciful thing my character ever did?

Fallout: New Vegas. I punched Benny's head off with a Ballistic Fist instead of having him crucified and watching him slowly die. Pretty damn merciful considering the jackoff shot me in the face, then tried to run away with the platinum chip again after sending his goons to try and kill me in my suite in the Tops.

Back in Fable 1, I'd risk life and limb to save merchants or other miscellaneous NPCs that were in any area that I wandered into, even if it meant engaging a troll in close combat, and then heal them free of charge.

:/ Needless to say, I... never really got hurt whatsoever. Broken roll is broken.

My characters are not known for being merciful. I did let the Rachni queen live though... once...
