Steam-punk.
It just seems like it's been... picking up steam, lately.

There is a steam punk Batman apparently. So steampunk.

One just needs to look to the Final Fantasy series for insight. They either start the trends or follow them I can't tell anymore.

The series was very Tolkein-esque when it started but slowly became more Steam Punk as the series went on; with the Steam Punk 'zenith' being Final Fantasy VI. Then the Cyber Punk games and then the return to the Steam Punk setting and then Square/Enix ventured out into uncharted lands and created the very first Charlie's Angels themed game.

Final Fantasy Tactics was brilliant. I just thought I'd say that.

Erotic Fantasy.

The kind of ultraviolence, style and sexy you'd expect from a live-action Heavy Metal.
(Only with a coherent plot)

We'll hopefully see new games with innovative takes on fantasy and sci-fi settings, rather than ones that beat the same dead horse tropes over and over. We might see a sandalpunk fantasy game with a mixtec vibe, a sci fi game that includes genuinely 'alien' aliens rather than the humanoid people-but-with-slight-alterations variey, or fantasy games that take their influences from pre-tolkien fiction; folklore, fairy tales - a lot of it is creepy stuff.
Those off the top of my head. I've got better, but I'ma keeping them secret for now.

we are gonna see more and more open world games comes out .. and sci-fi games as well.. mass effect 4 might as well turn out to be an open world sci-fi action adventure rpg game.. lol..
personally am fine with whatever direction the gaming industry goes as long as the games continue to have a good, well written , well told story and interesting characters ..
i dont want to play an open world game thats just open world for the sake of it (cough *skyrim* cough) with barely anything interesting to do or without a good story.
so yeah lets see how video games continue to evolve ..

I hope sci-fi. I mean Mass Effect brought us a race of all female bi-sexuals that are culturally obliged to bang anything that moves. We need more of that. I know that may seem immature, but lets look at the alternatives: bethesda rpgs that gves us uncanny valley looking characters and almost no personality.

I want to see more Steampunk, the world needs more games like dishonored, more of that gritty industrial fantasy/sci fi

I'd like to see more space. Not just nasty aliens and big guns and sometimes pretty planets. Emphasis on exploration and really unique worlds.

Or like everyone else said, Steampunk would be pretty sweet too.

Cyberpunk/space exploration. Say, am I the only one who feels the new Total recall film had a great world built around it, which was utterly thrown away by poor writing and mediocre action?

It could have been AWESOME, but they wasted it on that stupid, poorly pieced, secret agent plot.
