After watching the new south park I've been thinking whats the point of jewelry? Do any of you care about jewelry at all? Other than symbolic purposes for like groups or marriages is there any point? Maybe I just dont get it or something but puting a piece of gold around my neck just doesnt mean anything to me. How about you escapists? Is it appealing to you?
Speaking as a guy who usually wears two or three pendants, and usually has his wrists totally covered by bands, beads, straps, and/or bandannas, I think it looks cool. So I wear it.

It used to be more of an emotional thing: my old friends all gave me a piece of jewellery when I left the area. I made a point to wear them all the time as little memoirs of times spent with them. Then I just liked wearing them for the look, so I kept adding or taking away bits, and now for a typical day I'll wear quite a few pieces of jewellery because I think it looks swanky.

In my fashion merchandising class, we're told it's to accentuate an outfit; pretty much to top it of. It draws attention as well, since they're generally shiny. Plus, during recessions they're a useful thing. I forgot why, though, and I'm too lazy to go through my notes.

You seriously don't know?

The point is the unique enchantments. All jewelry grants it's users unique effects, such as +10 HEALTH, INVISIBILITY, or FROST DAMAGE.

Yep, this guy is right. Jewelry can give you +10 SPEECHCRAFT.

I wear an anklet, nose ring, and ear piercing, why? I find them all aesthetically pleasing.

Just for looks i'd say. Sometime is sentimental though, same with tattoos. My triforce tattoo on my right wrist reminds me to never stop gaming, no matter how old I get and of course the amazingness of Legend of Zelda :p.

Then I have a necklace with a little blue stone on it my grandfather gave to me 10 years ago, I wear it to remember him and its usually hidden under my shirt as it goes with nothing I wear.

On my left wrist I always have leather bracelets/bracers or whatever you call them (its pretty thick) because I just like the way it looks and my uncle makes them for me in his shop. They're pretty awesome, the one i'm wearing right now has rattlesnake skin right down the middle :D

I don't get it either. I don't get why some girls feel the need to pointless waste their money buying a dozen shiny little trinkets to wear on their wrists. For what purpose? To fit in with everyone else?
For the same reason we buy pretty clothes instead of all dressing in standard-issue beige uniforms. Clothes, jewellery and make-up are tools women (and men, if you exclude the make-up) use to alter their appearance. They enable us to say something about our personalities, to attract the attention of the opposite sex and, well, just look good.

It's nice to look good. :)

Was thinking of making this myself.

We both know the answer, vanity. To look good, there is no other reason.

I get why people do it but I think people who spend excessive amounts are a bit silly, you could use that cash for better things.
You say that, what would you spend the money on? it is likely that they are meeting there basic needs food etc... so its whatever the feel there luxury should be, for me i have jewelery but i have not bought any of it, but i still wear it like even when i sleep etc...
What would I spend it on?

Anything else, nearly all other options would be more useful.

Examples

Movies: Enjoyable, make you happy, better mental state, better quality of life
Books and magazines: Expand your knowledge
Pc components: increase your efficiency
faster internet: do things faster, less wasted time
gym membership: improve your health
better food: buying less cheap food can improve your health

there are a few examples, here is what I see the benefits of jewelery

"Oh, that looks nice, I hope people think it looks good on me".

or

"I really need a drill head STAT, wait ill use this diamond!"

(The latter was obviously a joke)
While I mostly agree, I'd like to point out one thing.

You suggest, as an example for an alternate goal for the money spent on jewellery "Movies: Enjoyable, make you happy, better mental state, better quality of life". Surely, wearing jewelry can be enjoyable for a person. Make them happy and put them in a better mental state and lead to a better quality of life?
I have no problems with reasonably priced jewelery, my issue as stated in my original post is people who spend excessive amounts on jewelery.

I wouldn't really care if you spent the same on jewelery as you did other small things like listed about but when someone drops a few hundred quid on 1 ring I think it is stupid.

And based on films, they can send messages and ideas to you that can shape your opinions and outlook on life.
If people have that sort of money, a few hundred pounds is pocket change to them. Hell if I was rich, I'd have a money swimming pool and buy expensive cars just to crash them outside my mansion.

What do you think the point of it is? Why do people wear black, red or blue, tattoos, dye their hair, wear boots instead of trainers, sport a hat or anything else that people wear?

The point of jewelry is to look pretty and attract attention.
Shiny things attract the eye. People wearing shiny things get noticed. You can get specific jewelry to go with a specific pieces of clothing, making them compliment each other and create a desired effect.
Jewelry can literally make a person look more attractive.
Here are some examples:

I don't know about you but I think that's hot.
