After reading a couple of posts on various threads about portal 2 They were all complaining about day 1 dlc and I don't see why people hate it its only worthless dlc that you don't need and that the developers put in so they can get more money to develop games and they probaly did it while portal 2 was being developed as a side project so I would like to know what do you think about Day 1 dlc

Buying a game should mean you buy a game. Get everything on the disk, and enjoy it. Not be compelled to spent money on files priced completely disproportionately to the game.
The items in the the portal 2 store, for instance, are not worth what they're priced. They should be priced £0.01 each. Or better yet scrap the whole thing and have them as unlockable through gameplay only.

I'm not familiar with what's going on with Portal right now. What is this DLC, and how much is it?

Varies. I saw one item for £3, some other smaller things for £0.70.

Day 1 DLC tends to be things that should be in the game anyway, or in some cases, is already on the disc, and we're being charged extra.

If it's ready for release on day one then 9/10 of the time it is already on the disc and the player just pays to unlock it, which is not fair in the slightest, as if it is already made when the game is released, then they should have included it in the game as standard.

DLC on day one isn't really DLC, it's part of the main game they held back on purpose to make more money. If you don't see anything wrong with that, then look at it this way. Imagine ordering a pepperoni pizza and then going there to pick it up, only to be told your pizza is done but you have to pay $5 extra for them to add the pepperoni. It just comes off as a shady business practice.

It's basically a store where you can buy new skins/hats for P-body and Atlus. But the prices are kinda ridiculous. It was like £1.50+ for a skin.

OT: I don't really care about the store, but the principal behind it. If I buy a game full price/new, I expect to get all the content without having to pay extra on top. And it being Day-1 means they must have been developing it at the same time as the actual game. So why not include it?

EDIT: I thought of some examples:

Deadspace Multiplayer. You had to buy a code to unlock it, or buy it new.

Assasins Creed 2. It skipped past two memory sequences and allowed you to buy them afterwards. (I admit, not Day-1, But still taking the piss.)

It's basically saying 'fuck you' to the consumer. 'Why are we asking you to buy these? Because we can.'

That sounds a bit crappy really. I wonder how many people will try to excuse this because it's Valve that's doing this.

Day 1 dlc just feels wrong. Why leave things out if they are already done? Release everything that is done and charge for future content when said content is done. This is how IMO they should work

Okay, I could understand if the DLC was part of the story, or unlocked new characers. But it's only letting you change the paint scheme to the two robots, which I wouldn't want to do anyways.

Edit: So yeah, I don't see the issue.
Though crap like the Day 1 DLC for Dragon Age 2 was not cool Bioware.

If the DLC is finished then just put it in the game.

DLC should be for things that the developers didn't get to finish on time, or if they want to add to the game after a while.

Well I would think that being able to charge additional for shit that has no impact on narrative, gameplay or story, and doesn't impact the game leaves it as an option for those who care enough while leaving the full game cheaper for those who don't give a damn.

While sometimes it's content held back on the disk (which is a shady business practice) sometimes it's just the opposite, in that during the month or so of production (millions of disks don't just magically appear you know!) the developers are sitting around twiddling their fingers and decide (or are told to) do sometime more productive with their time, aka make dlc, which cannot possibly be included on the disk BECAUSE the disk content has already been finalized and is in the process of production.

Regardless, most of the time it's nothing even vaguely important, and only people who really love the game will ever buy it (and not even then).

Unfortunately it's hard to tell between developer love for their creation or corporate greed, so people often assume the latter, and get very angry over very very little.

Day I DLC often is:

- Content already on the disc, paid for extra to unlock existing content [ See Bioshock 2 MP ]

- Content already made but not put in the disc so they can charge us extra for cut out content. A very dirty tactic if you ask me.

- Content made after the main game has been developed and they have some time left to create additional content.

In that case, they should offer it free for 1st hand buyers and ask for additional money from those who purchased secondhand. Or not. At any rate, it's often the 2nd one and some devs play it off like the 3rd.

At any rate, I am just careful about such games and usually avoid them.
Bioshock's would have been excusable if they didn't charge the full 60 at retail so non-multiplayer focused gamers didn't have to pay for something they wouldn't use. Unfortunately, they didn't.

Taking this out and charging people for it doesn't make the full game cheaper, as they were developed at the same time, it just makes them more money. Which, I admit is the point of a business, but that doesn't make it suck any less.
